This paper investigated the information sources used by public librarians. Six prefectures in Kanto District were studied through questionnaires and the following results were obtained: Library staff who were qualified as librarians used more diverse information sources than those who were not qualified. Library staff who do not have sufficient experience preferred to acquire information from persons in the same local government or other local government librarians. The existence of information in the media and interlibrary loan activities influenced the information sources used by librarians. Training by the prefectural library or library association in the prefecture considerably affected the selection of information sources used by public librarians.

The aim of this study was to clarify current state of public libraries of all local governments that adopted the Designated Administrator System (Shitei-Kanrisha-Seido) for public library management. The method of this study was conducted by the nationwide survey. This survey consisted of a questionnaire which was distributed to 67 local governments and 107 public libraries. The author received in October 2007 128 valid response. As a result, the following points were concluded. (1) As regards the merit of the Designated Administrator System, local government's recognition almost corresponded to the designated administrator's in improvement of user service and cost reduction. (2) On the contrary, as regards the demerit of the Designated Administrator System, local government's recognition differed from the designated administrator's in instability of library management and deterioration of librarian's labor condition.

Literary museum research has taken longer to develop as a discipline than library science or museology, but the numbers have gradually increased in recent years. In general, it is thought that this development occurred after the 1995 inauguration of the National Council of Literary Museums. In order to confirm this point, I conducted a literature survey using the National Diet Library's Japanese Periodical Index and discovered a difference in the number and content of articles that appeared in 1995 and earlier or 1996 and later. Also, I pointed out the same trend about books that happened during the same period. Thus, we can infer that literary museum research has developed during the last ten years or so.
