Education for music librarianship is critical to provide appropriate music services to users. Music Library Association of Japan and International Association of Music Librarians, Archives and Documentation Centres, Japan Branch, are exclusively responsible for training music librarians in Japan. Their training programs have not yet been examined comprehensively. This study examined training programs offered by them for future directions of education for music librarianship. The authors analyzed the topics of the training programs and the articles of newsletters issued by the above associations based on the research results by the academic library group of LIPER (Library and Information Professions and Education Renewal) project. They further referred to the examples described in the competency list of Music Library Association in US to examine the topics from the aspect of subject information profession. The study clarified the problems of the past training programs and responsibilities of the music library associations for the future of music librarianship education.

Questionnaires and interviews surveys of a huge public libraries ware conducted to grasp the current situation and clarify the basic direction to be taken concerning information literacy service. The results are as follows; Public libraries provide contents and programs designed to improve information literacy of individual users through repeated efforts. Additionally, I have found that they might have provided information literacy service not only for individual users but also for a grouping of limited users in the course of surveys. They provide information literacy service in a way as single service or multiple service. In case of multiple service, information literacy service is woven into reading service, business information service, formal education support service, administrative support service, and others. Information literacy is contained in information-seeking, information evaluation and others. Therefore information literacy is important in library services. Information literacy service become more diverse and keep on growing in public libraries.
