    The problem is wedge thrombus due to material of cannula. We thought that to solve the problem replace its' material with hybrid material. Hybrid blood inflow cannula is formed by implanting the core which consist of polyester velour and titanium conduit. Then, the cell component decellularized. By using this cannula, examined on chronic animal experiment with VAD in heterologous transplantation to evaluate the biocompatibility of cannula. As a result, the goat survived 53days without antithrombogenic agents and the cannula was connected to neighboring cardiac muscle smoothly and thrombos weren't formed. And the result of immunostaining, surface of cannula was coated with endothelial cells.

    The Body Surface Area (BSA) is currently used as a quantitative standard to determine whether one can implant a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). BSA is a standard value calculated by using height and body weight. It is difficult to accurately determine whether a VAD implant is appropriate for a patient when a patient's BSA measurement is small. The purpose of this study is to find the more accurate quantitative standard than BSA. With the constructed 3D-model, we calculated the 3 characteristics of the parameter of the subject's anatomical compatibility. Using these parameters, Mahalanobis Distance(MD) of the subjects who have BSA close to the standard was calculated. With these results, it was found that the subjects have wide differences of MD even if they have the same BSA. Based on these results, it was suggested that the using MD has a possibility of accurately evaluation.

    In our previous work, minimally invasive microperfusion needle (0.2 mm in diameter) which collects biological substances from subepidermal tissue had been developed. In this study, an electrolysis pump was developed as the pump which perfuses perfusate into microperfusion needle. This pump consists of electrolyte chamber which contains interdigitated array electrodes, discharge liquid chamber and Parylene corrugated membrane between two chambers. The gases are produced in electrolyte chamber and the liquid is discharged by pushing the corrugated membrane. The fabricated pump has enough function to discharge the discharge liquid at a flow late of 5 μl/min for more than 2 hours.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of electrical stimulation on angiogenesis. We developed an implantable camera device which observes blood vessels in animal bodies with stimulating electrodes. This device was implanted under the goat skin for 60 days. Electrical stimulations were applied with a sinusoidal wave of 60 kHz and a current density of 300μA/mm2. Angiogenesis was clearly observed in the non-stimulated chamber, while angiogenesis did not occur in the stimulated chamber. These results show that electrical stimulation of this condition has effective to suppress angiogenesis.

    In this study, we studied on a high sensitive triaxial force sensor for blood pressure pulse wave measurement. Our sensor consists of 3 cantilevers for sensing xyz directional force which were embedded in PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) with hollow structure. The size of the sensor is 18×18×10 mm3. Since the cavity of PDMS structure enlarges the deformation, the sensitivity becomes higher. The sensitivity was 15.15 mV/kPa and it was about 4.4 times higher than the conventional sensor. We measured blood pressure pulse wave and calculated the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) of blood pressure pulse wave. The SNR was 4.56 and it was improved by 18 % compared to the conventional sensor.

    In this study, we have developed a chip-surface stimulus electrode array for fully-implantable subretinal prosthesis chip. To realize visual restoration with high resolution, stimulus electrodes should be miniaturized and arrayed with high density. When we miniaturize them, however, their electrochemical impedances become higher and their amount of charge injection become smaller. Additionally, as the number of electrodes increases, it becomes difficult to make electrical connection to each pixel of the retinal prosthesis chip and each electrode by electrical wiring. To overcome these problems, we have developed the stimulus electrodes that have low electrochemical impedances and large charge injection capacities, and established a fabrication process of chip-surface stimulus electrode array. We fabricated the stimulus electrodes made of extremely porous platinum which had large-surface-area compared with conventional Pt. We also fabricated the chip-surface stimulus electrodes array on the subretinal prosthesis chip which surface was rough and covered with insulator film.

    The objective is developing new calcium-phosphate (CP) cement indicating simultaneously fine-injectability, short-setting-time and high-strength.β-tricalcium-phosphate (control-TCP) powder was ball-milled to produce a new cement-powder. XRD-profiles indicated the peaks of TCP-powder become broader with increasing milling time. The powder after 24 h milling (modified-TCP) was mixed with CaCl2 solution, and then NaH2 PO4 solution. The paste after mixing was filled in a syringe and the time performing injectability was measured. Control-TCP paste lost injectability immediately, however, the modified-TCP paste showed injectability for 45 min. Mechanical-properties were evaluated by compressive-strength (CS) and diametral-tensile-strength (DTS). The CS and DTS of modified-TCP 1 d and 2 w after setting were 40.2 and 49.6 MPa, and 4.6 and 7.9 MPa, respectively. Those of control-TCP were 1.2 and 2.6 MPa, and 0.1 and 0.5 MPa, respectively. All the CS and DTS of modified-TCP were significantly higher than those of control-TCP after same setting-time (p < 0.01).

    When water containing sodium chloride(NaCl) is electrolyzed, strongly acidic electrolyzed water is generated on the anode. However, it is unsuitable for biological applications because of its strong acidity. Weekly to slightly acidic electrolyzed water(WSAEW) has a physiological pH levels and can be applied to various uses at home care. Generally, in order to make WSAEW with symmetric electrolytic cell, hydrochloric acid is required. The present study provides a method of producing WSAEW with NaCl solution. In the electrolysis process a asymmetric electrolytic cell is used. As a result, WSAEW was obtained directly by this device and this water showed the strong bactericidal activity. This device is useful for producing WSAEW as a disinfectant to employ at home care, when considering economic and environmental factors, since it returns to ordinary water after use.

    The authors aim to address self-management support of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients who are treated in the temporary housings of disaster-stricken areas. We develop a web management system to collect lifestyle information from patients with mild to moderately-severe CHF. Patients can enter information on their lifestyle and medication. They send their information to the web server of the medical institution using a tablet PC. We present the basic health conditions that are essential for patient management of CHF. We then examine the functions required to implement this system. Based on the results of these investigations, we designed an input interface and created a program that the patients can use to manage their prescription medicine, their weight and other items. Our system is expected to increase the ease of information collection, which is an important part of managing patients with CHF. We plan to validate this system in a clinical.

    By the stress theory of H. Selye, the stress to generally say is both distress and eustress. So, a cause to bring about eustress is eustressor. In addition, there are two in the stress (distress) actions to be taken, one is to decrease absolutely quantity and the other is to increase the anti-drag relatively. The latter becomes the eustress. Therefore, it is important to grasp the eustressor. However there are few studies of the eustress about eustressor and how it becomes the eustress. In this study, a trial run of the eustress evaluation system using the psychotechnology, advocated by us, was performed paying special attention to environmental factors.

    To promote a development of models of multilevel physiological systems, it is crucial to establish a framework to share and reuse modes among researchers. For providing such a space, databases in Physiome.jp were renovated, and interoperability with tools for modelling and simulation was enhanced. The PH Database includes three databases for models, morphological data and time series data. If the sharing level of data is set as "public", any users visited the cite can view and download it. Logged in users also can share models only to specific users. This function can be used for team development of models. We demonstrated that PhysioDesigner, a modelling platform for multilevel physiological systems, can directly access the PH Database and can search, download and upload models. Such interoperability with tools boost up the usability of the PH Database and make it easier for researchers to utilize it in their research activities.

    We, the Disaster ME laboratory are studying the Rescue Robot that can scoop victim inside of the robot body, and prevent crush syndrome. Our "Robot-in-Robot-style Rescue Robot" is constructed by "Carrier Unit" and "Brooder Unit". The Carrier Unit goes through under rubble. The Brooder Unit rescues the victim trapped in rubbles, and extricate from a narrow space using the tunnel that the Carrier Unit had been laid. In order to investigate the optimum shape of Archimedes' screw rod to climb through 4 kinds of off-roads (dry land, gravel, packed snow and rubble model), Alter 4-6 turns of aluminum screw blade wound around the Rod.

    It is thought that indicating a skill index and training effect quantitatively is effective to improve a learning effect in endoscopic surgery training. Therefore, we propose a quantitative assessment system of endoscopic surgery training under the environment only using a camera. In our laboratory, we developed a system evaluating the surgical work flow with performance index like surgical instrument trajectory, velocity and time. In this research, we developed a system to obtain the performance index from camera images of endoscopic surgery training task, and we evaluate this system. To detect a surgical instrument, we combined background subtraction,optical flow and Hough transform.

    Exquisite controller of nervous system, so-called, a central pattern generator (CPG), exists in rhythm phenomena of organism. Mathematical network models were proposed to account for the phenomena, however, the physiological details has not been clear. The basic form of this model is a combination of reciprocal inhibition of nervous systems that control extensor and flexor, respectively, and, as such, must be observed mutual bursting discharge. Rybak et al. proposed a Hodgkin-Huxley type mathematical CPG model composed of two levels.We constructed, in this study, reproduced quadruped walking patterns (gaits) by means of coupling four hardware CPG models, based on Rybak's mathematical model. So far, such the networked CPG model was simultaneously controlled by plural parameters to generate abundant gaits, or network structure itself was changed every gait. In this study, we proposed a hard-wired CPG network that has been possible to generate two gaits, by changing just one parameter.

    Most of young students are walking in many kinds of negative conditions in a daily life style. They are walking with a heavy bag on a same shoulder, and listening to rock music. Their food contents are much fat and carbohydrates, the percentage of body fat is large in body composition. This study analyzes the fluctuations of center of body gravity while walking by young students wearing a portable measurement system using an accelerometer. Their walking balances were out of 1/f fluctuation of a stable index of human body, in negative conditions. They are walking with separated two bags, listening with Mozart music, and their muscle increased with much protein reduced fat and carbohydrates in three months, their walking balances were close to 1/f fluctuation. Their walking balance improved after changing a daily life style.

    Renal blood flow is regulated within an appropriate range, in which Glomerular efferent arteriolar diameter is controlled by the juxtaglomerular apparatus as tubulo-glomerular feedback. The purpose of this study is to visualise Ca concentration change in those cells associated with tubulo-glomerular feedback.After anaesthetising a Wistar rat (n=6), its left kidney was exposed and the surface of its kidney was peeled shallowly for observation. To dye the intravascular space, we administered Texas Red conjugated bovine albumin. As for Ca probe, we administered Fluo-4. After visualising the glomerular microcirculation by confocal laser microscopy, continuous extrarenal administration of hypertonic saline (25%, 0.1ml/kg/min) was performed to induce tubulo-glomerular feedback. Saline (0.9%) was administered as a control.There was a difference on the profiles of Ca intensity around the glomerular arteriolar orifice between hypertonic salt and saline administration groups (p<0.05).We were able to visulise Ca concentration change in association with tubulo-glomerular feedback mechanism.

    The cause of decrease in FEV1.0 in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) has been believed due to the obstruction of peripheral small airways. However, direct evidences of the proposed mechanism have never been shown. We have proposed a hypothesis that overinflated lungs compressed the inra-mediastinal airway (IMA, intra-thoracic trachea, main bronchi, and right lobar bronchi) in COPD at the beginning of forced expiration and would let IMA collapse due to Bernoulli effect. We have verified the hypothesis by 4D-CT images during maximum forced expiration of five COPD patients and one normal volunteer. The IMA of all patients were extremely narrowed just after the beginning of forced expiration and slightly recovered later. The membranous part of IMA was invaginated inside. There was no apparent shape change in the normal subject. The relative volume at two seconds after were highly correlation to FEV1.0 (r2= 0.93).

    Recently, phase-contrast X-ray CT imaging has been developed, and is used for the observation of the various biological organs. This imaging system with X-ray phase shift is approximately 1000-times higher sensitivity than conventional X-ray imaging. In this study, we examined the most suitable X-ray energy to visualize the internal structure of the rat's spleen by phase-contrast X-ray CT using the crystal X-ray interferometer. The X-ray energy was set at 17.8 and 35 keV. Phase-contrast X-ray CT imaging well depicted the internal structures of spleen such as white pulp, red pulp and blood vessel resembling to histological picture. In low X-ray energy image, streak artifact from marginal edge of spleen occurred, however the internal structures of spleen were visualized much clearer than that in high X-ray energy image. Thus, low X-ray energy might be more suitable to observe the fine biological structures.

    Nowadays, we can obtain 3D vascular network information inside a body using a 2D matrix array ultrasound probe. This information is useful for diagnosis or intra-operation. However, Doppler volume is incomplete because obtained volume dimensions are still limited and Doppler signal strength depends on flow direction. Therefore, to obtain complete vascular network, we propose a method for fusion of multiple 3D Doppler volumes using automatic registration of shared bifurcation points. To evaluate the method, 24 Doppler volumes of four human subjects were acquired. We confirmed that the method can automatically fuse Doppler volumes with 0.53 mm in root mean square error.

    The synergetic effect of whole body vibration (WBV) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) on bone healing was evaluated using ovariectomized mice. Mice underwent the drill-hole surgery on the right tibial diaphysis at 11 weeks of age and divided into C (n=14), W (n=12), P (n=14), and WP (n=11) groups. From the day after the surgery, mice in W and WP were exposed to 0.3-g WBV at 45 Hz for 20 min/day, and mice in P and WP received subcutaneous PTH injection (30μg/kg/day). The tibiae were harvested 20 days after the surgery, and the microstructure and material properties of regenerated bone were analyzed by μCT and infrared microspectroscopy. Results showed the synergetic effect of WBV and PTH.

    Introduction: In order to simultaneously monitor neutrophil migration in vivo during inflammation, we developed a novel animal model for subcutaneous soft tissue infection using transgenic mouse bearing fluorescence-positive neutrophils and bioluminescent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
    Methods: Eight to nine-week-old male lys-EGFP C57BL/6 were anesthetized (50 mg/kg pentobarbital sodium, ip) and 1.0 ×107 CFU of bioluminescent MRSA (Xen31, PerkinElmer) were subcutaneously injected. Control group was injected with PBS while the treatment group was given Arbekacin (25 mg/kg) intravenously via tail vein. For the evaluation of MRSA activity and neutrophil accumulation, an in vivo imaging system (LAS-4000, GE) was performed.
    Results: Both groups displayed similar pattern with significant drop in MRSA bioluminescence and neutrophil fluorescence peaked on day 1. However, bacterial infection completely resolved in treatment group by day 6 with gradual decline in neutrophil fluorescence.
    Conclusions: This animal model could be a competent method for assessment of subcutaneous soft tissue infections.

    With recent advanced and complex medical technologies, viewing the locations of blood vessels and organs through 3D-reconstructed images during medical operations is essential for safe and accurate procedures. The conventional observation methods require the use of computer mice with the hand, which is inappropriate in sanitary environments such as operation rooms. We developed an application program for monitoring volume-rendered images using the Leap Motion, a remote-controlling device instead of conventional mice. In this research, we realized an interface that allows the users to have synchronized perception and understanding of holding 3D objects, which can be frustrating when using the Leap Motion, through the postures of fingers and timing input. In our demonstrational experiment, doctors reviewed that they could observe three-dimensional location information in a sanitary manner through easy operations. This method proves the possibility of the Leap Motion becoming an indispensable device in diverse medical fields.

    Recently, the gait disorder that originates in foot region abnormality such as knock-knees, flat-foots and loss of arch becomes a social problem. Leaving of the foot region abnormality might change into the serious symptom, such as of the skeletal deformity and hallux valgus. However, the technique for detecting the foot region abnormality at the early stage has not been developed. We analyze the backward picture of the heel of the standing position to detect the abnormality. In the image analysis, we investigate abnormality foot inclination for calcaneus angle, low leg angle, and LHA. In this paper, the automatic analysis program is developed based on the measurement model (Fig.1).

    We are developing reconstruction methods of human tissue thermal properties using internal temperature distribution measurements. The thermal properties include conductivity, capacity and perfusion. The temperature can be measured using an ultrasound echo method or a nuclear magnetic resonance method. Realizing the real-time reconstruction permits to achieve the treatment planning of a low invasive thermal treatment such as a HIFU. In order to stabilize the reconstruction, we have applied a low pass filtering to temperature data. In this report, we use a polynomial fitting method instead of the low pass filter. The increase in a reconstruction accuracy is verified through simulations (Fig).

    That people get to know the point which gets interested has big utility value in various fields, such as medicine, education, and economy. Humans have the habit of turning a face to the interested direction. The equipment which is interlocked with a motion of a face and controls the direction of a camera was developed. A point of feeling interest can be quantified in analyzing image and direction of a face. We succeeded at getting the quantification of the interest in extensive, until now we are impossible by the eye camera.

    Walking is an important factor in good health. People can have good experiences when walking with their friends, shopping, sightseeing, and so on. However, some people may lose the ability to walk because of traffic accidents or falls. Some accidents are due to properties of the landscape such as steep hills and places with poor visibility. If people recognize specific risks before walking, then they may avoid such accidents. When, people can see the road information using a smartphone or PC. However, such equipment is not friendly for elderly people and children. In this research, authors developed special mobile data viewer for such people.

    Our aim is to develop a surgical navigation system for safer implementation of open surgery. The navigation system uses short 3D laparoscope to obtain surgical field image. By overlaying 3D models of surgery targets such as organs, tumors and blood vessels on the image, we aim to develop a system in which the operator will be able to instinctively grasp information such as how deep the blood vessels are in the surgical field. In addition to developing a basic system for the navigation, we have also developed a function that would complete registration at the shortest time possible and a function to reflect organ resection plane planned before operation.

    We are studying a new laparoscopic surgery replacing carbon dioxide gas with isotonic liquid(water-filled Laparoendoscopic surgery(WaFLES)). In WaFLES, we can control temperature of organs, humidity of abdominal cavity, and bleeding from vein. However surgical view is sometimes worse due to isotonic liquid pollution. In this research, we developed a real-time overlay navigation system using segmented blood-vessel-model from 3D ultrasound image for WaFLES. On this system, rendered vessel model segmented form real-time 3D ultrasound image is overlaid on endoscopic view of operative fields to assist endoscopic surgery. We apply the region growing segmentation using confidence interval of histogram around seed point to cover the complicated blood-vessel image on ultrasound. The update rate of navigation information on our system is within 200ms which is fast enough for accurate guidance on movable and deformable organs. Our proposed method can provide real-time and accurate segmentation for the movable and deformable organ.

    Patients suffering from severe malignant brain tumors show low five-year survival rates after neurosurgery. Therefore, there is a strong need to improve the enucleation rate of malignant brain tumors. Toward this end, high-performance and highly accurate surgery support systems are required. In addition, such systems should be usable with existing equipment and be easily installable in operation rooms. To satisfy these requirements, we proposed a microscopic image overlay navigation system. Furthermore, we developed an intraoperative real-time camera calibration algorithm can be used for the highly accurate overlay of navigation images on microscopic images. We evaluated the image overlay accuracy using an evaluation phantom. In a phantom experiment, the image overlay parameter error was 2.13 mm as compared with the Zhang camera calibration. The experimental result suggests the proposed algorithm performs highly accurate image overlay. Therefore, we believe that the image overlay navigation system developed could enable high-precision brain tumor enucleation.

    Water-Filled Laparo-endoscopic Surgery (WaFLES) is a surgical technique that is performed by filling liquid into abdominal capacity. By applying WaFLES, 3D ultrasound image can be taken from outside abdomen. We proposed a real time 3D ultrasound navigation system for guiding the laparoscopic surgery. However ultrasound-guided surgery has limitations due to poor image quality and limited view of 3D ultrasound. To overcome these drawbacks, we developed a fusion method for 3D ultrasound image and high resolution 3D CT image. The method consists in the initial alignment of target and optimization of mutual information between two 3D images. Experiment show that fusion error is about 3mm.

    Blood collection is being frequently performed for blood donation and clinical testing. However the skill acquisition is exclusively performed by clinical experience for patients and simulation with an arm model of silicone rubber. However, there are some problems that they are not able to reproduce the individually different of puncture reaction force by age or body habitus, furthermore the risk of accidents or distress to patients. Therefore, we focused on haptic technology that reproduces mechanically the tactile, moreover we have been developing a blood sampling simulator that can reproduce the various reaction force. We obtained the viscoelastic modules of elastic rubber by needle puncture experiment with an elastic rubber, and constructed a reaction force model that considered the changes of the reaction force depending to puncture speed. As the results of simulation depending to the puncture, the behavior of the reaction force due to the puncture speed could be reproduced.

    HIFU is a treatment that can ablate tumors in the body non-invasively. Also, the control of microbubbles in vivo by ultrasound has been researched for the purpose of drug/gene delivery and high efficiency of HIFU. One key of these treatments is accurate positioning of a therapeutic transducer on body surface. We developed parallel-link robot for positioning the transducer to apply to control microbubbles. However, contact force on body surface, which is important for penetration of ultrasound into treatment area, was not considered. Therefore, we developed the control method to make the ultrasound axis pierce the target, where the contact force is obtained between maximum and minimum force.

    Ventricular assistance devices have been very useful to the patients with chronic heart failures. But, regular consumption of anticoagulants to suppress the thrombosis results into many bleeding related complications. Such complications are also observed in the patients getting hemodialysis and patients undergoing heart surgery using heart-lung machine. Currently, the anticoagulation management is based on offline tests. But, the real-time non-invasive blood monitoring system is highly desirable to optimize the anticoagulation therapy. As a basic study in that direction, we employed electrical impedance spectroscopy method to study the electrical chacteristics of bovine blood under thrombogenic condition. The resistance and reactance were measured in the frequency range of 1 kHZ to 5 MHz. The measured values were then analyzed using equivalent circuit fitting. It was observed that the capacitance of the blood can be used to quantitatively measure the degree of aggregation of red blood cells in the blood undergoing thrombosis.

    Pulsatility in aortic flow can be obtained with native ventricles even if the assist devices are rotary blood flow types. Therefore, it is anticipated that the pulsatile flow with centrifugal blood pumps might cause changes in peripheral perfusions. We have been establishing a new method of measuring peripheral perfusions by using a high speed CCD camera in order to diagnose blood flow in peripheral organs.In this study, we performed an animal experiment using a goat and examined renal circulation under the administration of vasodilator with two different types of blood flow measurements; a laser Doppler tissue flow and the CCD. We also compared the peripheral impedance in each method as well as the renal input impedance calculated by the aortic pressure and electromagnetic flow waveforms. As a result, the longitudinal and characteristic impedance data decreased under the vasodilation condition in each renal peripheral perfusion analysis.

    It is almost impossible to obtain pulmonary physiological changes continuously and on a long-term basis using RI scintigraphy. Therefore, an attempt has been made to introduce an electrical impedance method, on account of its noninvasiveness and applicability to patients under intensive care.We have proposed the multi-electrode impedance method. The feasibility of simultaneous independent measurements of impedance variation in the right and left apex and base of the lungs using this method was investigated. To obtain independent impedance measurements in each region, high impedance sensitivity areas must be localized by weighting the impedance sensitivity distribution. By simultaneous currents applying from the plurality current electrodes, appropriate weighting of the sensitivity was performed. Through the simulation study, the effects of weighting the impedance sensitivity distribution were verified. In this study, we developed the multi-electrode impedance pneumography for clinical application. By mounting the micro-computer on the apparatus, the operability is improved.

    The authors have been developing a pulmonary mechanical circulatory system in order to establish design parameters of newly designed artificial cardiovascular devices. In the quantitative examination of heart valves in pulmonary mock circulation, interactive changes in pressure and flow are regulated by pulmonary impedance characteristics. We focused on the native characteristics changes in impedance in the pulmonary circulation.
    To obtain the effect of respiratory control on pulmonary resistance, we measured pulmonary arterial pressure and flow in adult goat under the different respiratory settings with open- and closed-chest condition.
    We calculated pulmonary input impedance in two respiratory conditions under the anesthetized open-chest positive pressure ventilation (PPV) and the awake spontaneous respiration (SR). Longitudinal impedance in SR showed lower than in PPV. Characteristic impedance in SR was bigger than in PPV. Therefore, we concluded that the pulmonary impedance should be considered for more sophisticated simulation of pulmonary circulatory support devices.

    This study is aimed at investigating possibility of Impedance CT applying two-dimensional analysis. Two-dimensional Electrical Impedance CT has two advantages. This analysis method can estimate internal conductivity distribution faster and the number of required electrodes is fewer compared to three-dimensional analysis. It is suitable for using clinical application. At first, we tried to apply easy filter using the ratio of the potential distribution. However the result of the analysis had the image with noise and indicated not so correct conductivity distribution. The results depend on the relationship between conductivities and positions of the object of different conductivity and tissue around it. It was found that the problem caused by the difference of dimensions occurred. Therefore we need to apply new filter to eliminate the influence of the difference of dimensions. By using a new filter based on Neural Network, it was suggested that the correct conductivity distribution can be obtained.

    We have investigated the inverse problem for estimation of the internal conductivity distribution of the body using the impedance sensitivity theorem. The relationship between number of unknown voxels and electrode sets was discussed. As a result, by reducing the number of unknown conductivity mediums, it was suggested that the convergence to the true conductivity distribution was accelerated and the required measurement accuracy was reduced. In the previous study, the adapted structural information was assumed. In this study, we investigated a method to reduce the unknown variables by predicting the internal structure in the iteration process. The method was based on depth-first search. Moreover, by adapting the process of adjusting the weighting coefficients of the correction value in the iteration process, the CT analysis program was improved. As a result, a possibility of the reducing the unknown conductivity medium without previous assumption of the structure information was suggested.

    In recent years, blood viscosity has been increasingly noticed as a health index, which would be simultaneously enhanced with aggregation phenomenon of red blood cells (RBCs). There is a possibility that significant symptoms, which are derived from hemodynamic disturbance represented by necrosis of lower limb, are caused not only by the thrombus but also by the aggregation of RBCs. The symptom regions may easily broken by mechanical treatments such as massage and vibration. Thus, it is desirable to cure the emboli composed of the aggregation of RBCs by a method with less damage.A method which destructs the RBC aggregation using an ultrasonic pressure has been studied. A setup which includes a 5-MHz transducer and a pulser-receiver, was found to achieve the acoustic pressure higher than the bonding strength among the RBCs deduced from the past articles. The acoustic pressure obtained in this study satisfied the safety standard.

    Background/objective: The C mode of Ultrasonic microscopy has characteristics that allow pathological sections to be observed without staining and also it can analyze parameters such as sound velocity and attenuation. I thought that it helped the objective judgment of skin diseases by measuring sound velocity of the tissues. The velocity of Melanoma which is a malignant skin tumor was measured by using a high frequency ultrasonic microscopy in this time. Method: The optical image of HE-stained sections of melanoma specimen and the image from a high frequency ultrasonic microscopy were corresponded. The high frequency ultrasonic microscopy was set as centre frequency of 75MHz and focal length of 1.5mm and a transducer with oral diameter 1.2mm was used. A fast scanning was done and the image size was 300X300 and 2.4mmX2.4mm. Randomly ROI was taken and the velocities were measured. Result: At this stage, the velocity of a melanoma is 1545m/s.

    Pancreatic fistula has been reported to occur more frequently in laparoscopic surgery than conventional open surgery. Ultrasonically activated device (USAD) has been raised as one of the cause of that. This research has been conducted to determine whether USAD could be the direct cause of pancreatic fistula. In the observation of USAD's activation in water, cavitation bubbles occurred in both the tip and side of the blade. In the study using aluminium foil, there were no significant differences in fracture energy applied to aluminium foils in contact with both the tip and side of the blade. In addition, in the study using the domestic pig pancreas under general anesthesia, much less protein clotting covered the damaged sites was observed with USADs compared with electric scalpels. These data suggest that the contact of the pancreas to the activation of USAD's blade regardless of tip and side should be avoided.

    We have reported attempts to trap microcbubbles by ultrasound to increase density of microbubbles considering therapeutic efficiency. Because the form of blood vessel is complex, therapeutic efficiency will be improved by trapping in multiple areas simultaneously. However, there is a limitation of the number of transducers on body surface. In this study, we have developed a 2D-array transducer to form multiple focal points by designing the waveform. We observed microbubbles were trapped in 4 paths as shown in the figure. From the results, we confirmed the trapping efficiency was improved by comparing with the experiment of continuous emission with the same ultrasound energy above.

    We have reported path selection of microbubbles as a high density delivery method in flow by acoustic radiation force. However, it was impossible to change the sound field shape according to the movement of the microbubbles. In this study, forming the sound field with time variation using 2D ultrasound array transducer, we observed behavior of microbubbles in the thin channel of thickness 2mm. As shown in the figure, by forming two focal sound fields with opposite phases symmetrical in direction of flow and moving them towards the area C, we were able to form flow stream of microbubbles. From the result, it is suggested that higher density microbubbles can be delivered than previous method.

    The blood-flow can be estimated with Doppler ultrasound. However conventional ultrasound system can estimate only one-dimensional component. In this study, an aim is to estimate two-dimensional blood-flow vector by compounding two different one-dimensional components. The objective of the present study is to develop a method to obtain two-dimensional blood-flow vector by application of ultrasound Doppler technique. The two-dimensional blood-flow vector is estimated by compounding two different one-dimensional components of blood-flow vector. Each component was obtained by bidirectional Doppler ultrasound with parallel beamforming using the same probe in order to increase a frame rate. The experiment was conducted for in vivo carotid artery and a bifurcation phantom. In these experiences, two-dimensional blood-flow was observed by this technique. This work was implemented with a frame-rate of 100 Hz. We believe the method of estimating the true blood flow leads to early diagnosis of the diseases like thrombus and plaque.

    Deaf-blind persons are strongly dependent on interpreters and caregivers when getting surrounding environmental information. Once their caregivers or interpreters are away from the deaf-blind persons, they feel uneasiness because they are not able to acquire such information. To reduce this uneasiness, the surrounding environmental information acquisition system is developed in the study. The informations to be displayed by the system are the distance and direction of person around the deaf blind person in a room. The surrounding environmental information has been extracted by analyzing the image detected by Kinect. However, enough space is required for the setting of Kinect in practical use. It is necessary to develop a small size system to obtain the environmental information by using the compact sensor. In this study, an ultrasonic sensor system is performed to obtain the surrounding environmental information, and the availability is considered.

    It is widely accepted that the presence of microbubbles improves efficiency of sonoporation. We have been studying the mechanisms by using high-speed observation of bubble behavior. In this study, an observation chamber was improved to observe bubble behavior from a lateral direction. As shown in Fig. 1, a pair of miniature mirrors was added to the chamber, and one mirror was used to illuminate bubbles from the lateral direction, and another was used to guide the lateral image to an objective lens. Observation results showed that the presence of a rigid wall or other bubble causes a bubble to make non-spherical deformation that might induce cell membrane perforation.

    Though the improvement of efficiency in ultrasound treatment using microbubbles(MBs) is expected, because MBs spread in bloodstream, we have ever reported our attempts for active control of MBs in flow by Bjerknes force to increase concentration. However, the controllability of MBs in blood flow wasn't confirmed. In this study, we injected the suspension of MBs in a Y-shape artificial blood vessel. Experimental conditions were the central frequency of 5 MHz, flow velocity of 30 mm/s, and maximum sound pressure of 500 kPa. Figure shows an echogram of cross section near the bifurcation. From the results of brightness variation, we confirmed the possibility to induce MBs in blood flow.

    Recently, much attention has been paid to dendritic cell (DC)-based cancer immunotherapy. Antigen delivery by sonoporation has been examined using microbubbles (MB) loaded with antigen; however, its mechanisms are not revealed yet. In this study, sonoporation effect was compared in three typical locations of MB: (1) MB in the vicinity of a cell, (2) MB on a cell membrane, and (3) MB endocytosed inside a cell, by using MB conjugated with fluorescent dye. The results showed that antigen was transduced in the cases (1) and (2) but not in the case (3), indicating that the positional relation between MB and the cells strongly affects efficiency of antigen transduction.

    Recently, the biomechanics of cell has received attention because the study on the biomechanics will lead to development of diagnosis and treatment of cancer and arteriosclerosis. Most methods on the measurement of biomechanics require direct contact to the cell. Because the square of sound speed is proportional to the cell elasticity, non-contact measurement of sound speed with ultrasound microscopy can obtain the mechanical properties. In the present study, quantitative measurement of cell parameters such as thickness, sound speed, acoustic impedance, density, bulk modulus, attenuation and images of each parameter are successfully obtained. The transducer had 150 MHz center frequency and f-number of 0.88 and focal length of 3.8 mm. Pulse spectrum analysis was applied to calculate thickness and sound speed of the cells because the signal from a cell surface was not distinguished from the echo from the petri dish. This study may contribute measurement of cellular biomechanics.
