There have been many discussions on the waveform distortion of intracardiac pressure measured by the catheter method. Tip transducer type catheters which can eliminate waveform distortion have also following problems.
1. Manufacturing difficulty in the micro-mechano-electric transducing element.
2. Low stability under temperature variation and long term clinical use.
3. Safety problems due to direct connection between outer electric device and heart.
To solve these problems, application of fiber optics has been proposed. In this paper, the design construction and evaluation of the side hole type fiber optic catheter, which is intended to be used for intracardiac pressure measurement, is described.
Especially, this paper reports :
1) the selection of catheter tip material from the viewpoint of thrombus formation,
2) the membrane stiffness on the side hole, which influences the dynamic characteristics of the catheter,
3) the design method of the sensor by experimental method and evaluation by animal experiments.
The results obtained after the construction, experiment and evaluation have been as follows :
1) simple manufacturing compared to the tip transducer catheter,
2) high sensitivity and stability sufficient for right ventricular system blood pressure measurement,
3) simultaneous recording of pressure and heart sound and murmur,
4) low wall effect compared to the tip transducer type catheter and
5) high safety against microshocks.
