In the study, attitude of households toward kitchen waste composting at households was investigated. The relationship between characteristics of households who conduct kitchen waste composting and activity of home garden were investigated by a questionnaire survey at Takaoka town, Miyazaki. It was found that households who conducted composting of kitchen waste by themselves were also active for home garden. And there was a tendency that older people conducted composting of kitchen waste. For a promotion to encourage people to conduct composting of kitchen waste the method and benefit about composting should be provided at events concerning with the environment issues and gardening.

As a first step of research on evaluating effectiveness
of distributed biomass recycling system of business facility or regional unit,
in this study, we estimated the quantity of biomass waste which is generated
from green area, agricultural field, and cafeterias on a big campus of Okayama
University.  Each quantity of pruned fruits
branch, cut grass, rice straw, and animal waste was estimated by using the
calculation method of NEDO, crop waste was estimated by using a farm report published
by Faculty of Agriculture, and pruned and fallen leaves were estimated by using
the allometry method which estimates amount of leaves based on trunk diameter
and tree height.  The amount of the
kitchen waste generated from university cafeteria was figured out by hearing to
university Co-op.  As a result, it was
found that the amount of biomass waste generated on Okayama University campus is
1,454 ton/year.  If the biomass is burned
or used for bio gas generation, the electricity generation will be 6,765
GJ/year.

The purpose of this research is the promotion of Zero-emissions of by-products generated when constructing houses. In the previous report, we proved that to separate the by-products increase the recycling rate. In this report, we create a table that instructs how to separate the construction by-products. Then a result of carpenters separated the by-products, we measured the weight of by-products that were different with the table and we heard to carpenters about the ease of use of the table. In addition, we measured the weight of by-products per day.

  Municipal waste was to evaluate the composition of the landfill waste in this study. As a result, the percentage of the remaining incineration increased from around 1980, in the 2013 year is in the whole of 73%. Metal waste is contained many direct disposal waste 1988-1995 around, and has been estimated to account for 12-14% of landfill waste.
  Then, Landfill waste was evaluated and the CO2 emissions recycling possible amount of landfill waste on the assumption that recycling in the cement resources and melting process.
  Combustible waste (Other than waste plastic) was excluded from the assessment to decompose in the landfill site.
  As a result, until 1970 and 1990, landfill waste per tonne, is recovered about 800kg. is recovered, the breakdown of cement resources (incineration waste) 35-50%, metals 13-25%, the molten slag 34-40%.
  CO2 emissions for recycling was 510-639 kg-CO2/ton until around 2000. The increase of the remaining incinerated in recent years, there is a possibility to significantly decrease.

A physical input-output table for biomass in wet weight, dry weight, carbon and nitrogen was compiled in Kochi Prefecture by summarizing mainly statistical data. 380 million tons of biomass and water flows were estimated in FY 2007. Environmental emissions from biomass utilization and disposal were also estimated.

The 2014 fiscal compact electronic equipment recycling system building demonstration projects (municipality proposed type) implementation, Hyogo Prefecture Kawanishi also participated in this business, the collection box of small electrical and electronic equipment in the city 14 places, including this facility was established.
In this facility, it has implemented the decomposition workshops that target the disassembly and repair classrooms and electrical products such as one of the 3R enlightenment business with the aim of recycling-oriented society. In accordance with the experience that was involved in the operation of the collection box in the demonstration project, these decomposition work by taking advantage of the know-how and network of contacts obtained in the shop, involving electrical shop area, new small appliances recycling collection and sorting system and it is configured to perform practical proposals for the construction.

Effective information provision to formalise disposal behaviour in home appliance recycling Recent collection rates of End of Life home appliances from consumers (generators) hover around 60% - 70% in Japan.  Hence, formalising disposal behaviour of consumers is an indispensable element for further enhancement of the overall recycling performance. Weighing behavioural factors depends on the case and the prior knowledge of it. Moreover, previous studies show that there is room for further improvement in consumers’ knowledge of the home appliance recycling. In this study, an online questionnaire survey was carried out in order to estimate effect of promoting the formal disposal on behavioural factors, chiefly behavioural intention, by information provision. In prior to answering the questions, respondents (n=840) were randomly allocated to three groups regarding prior knowledge: a group with no prior information (reference group, n=416), a group provided with procedural information (n=212) and a group provided with declarative information (n=212). In this study, Azjen’s Theory of Planned Behaviour is employed as the decision-making model. The path coefficients and loading factors are estimated by structural equation modelling. Results reveal that acquiring declarative knowledge has more positive impact on behavioural intention of formal disposal in accordance with the recycling scheme.

Many municipalities in Japan have been collected PET bottle as recyclable waste since 1980’s. However, collected PET bottles always include other wastes and it prevents from efficient recycle of PET bottles. In order to promote PET bottle recycle, this study investigated the impact of trash bin design on PET bottle disposal, with firstly focusing on cap removal behavior. 10 categories of trash bin were designed. PET bottle collection experiments using designed trash bins were carried out since from April 2012 to May 2015. Experimental results indicate that combined specific design might have a preferable impact on cap removal behaviors. With respect to other materials incorporation, a trash bin designed as separated type and inside-visible collected many other materials. This might be contributed by not the design effect but accidental events. Except for this case, no clear difference among other trash bins was found. Paired t-test indicates that differences in all comparison were not regarded as significant with 5% of significance level. However, designs of each trash bin might influence each other. To conclude the effect of trash bin design on correct PET bottle disposal, continuing experiments and further discussion are necessary.

This study is an empirical investigation of the location of industrial waste disposal sites in Japan. We found some evidence of spatial concentration of industrial waste disposal sites in areas with other waste-related facilities. In addition, we found a higher number of industrial waste disposal sites per capita in municipalities that had not experienced conflict relating to the construction of disposal sites. Our results suggest that companies may decide to locate disposal sites in areas in which other waste related facilities already exist and/or where there is less citizen conflict over their construction. This would explain why there is a spatial concentration of unwanted facilities in some areas.

However, different stakeholders perceive the concept and the role of producers in varying ways. This study therefore conducted an international questionnaire survey on stakeholders’ perception of EPR and identified how various stakeholders in different countries perceived the concept of EPR from 426 responses obtained.

In Japan, a system for collecting waste and a valuable resource (recyclable resources) in the dual-track had been established from the 19th century or earlier. Collection of recyclable resources are based on economic rationality. Meanwhile, the recovery of waste are intended to public health. Is the recycling-oriented society has been formed. In recent years, circulation of resources by a fee in many municipalities collected and have been successful in reduction of waste. Japan's waste collection, has become a good social system that was based on the economy. On the other hand, currently, an increase of emissions in developing countries, waste collection as a social system is not functioning along with the diversification of quality. Be introduced excellent incineration technology and reclamation technology of Japan is important. The adaptation of the collection system as an excellent social system of Japan are required at the same time.

Domestic production volume of disposable diapers for adults has reached 4.9 billion sheets per year in 2013, and most of these diapers are incinerated after use. However, some recycling facilities are emerging which recover materials such as pulp from used diapers. In this study, a comparison on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) between incinerating and recycling of used diapers is conducted using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. One recycle scenario where RPF is produced from recycled pulp and plastic, a GHG emission reduction of 6~12% is observed compared to the incineration scenario. Another recycle scenario, based on experimental data, where extracted pulp is further processed by ozone treatment and fine pulp is produced that can be used for manufacturing diapers, a GHG emission reduction of 16~21% is observed compared to the incineration scenario.
