Recently, workpiece such as jet engine turbine case has been lightened and thinned for low fuel consumption. However, cutting workpiece of low stiffness that thinning causes contributes to vibration called "chatter vibration". In this study, the phenomenon of chatter vibration occurring on the workpiece is elucidated. By chatter vibration measurement, chatter vibration frequency and chatter vibration mode in cutting were found out. The measurement results turned out that chatter vibration in cutting comes from workpiece's natural vibration. It also turned out that chatter vibration is self-excited vibration, which is caused by coupling two natural vibrations near the cutting tool position.

Optimal feedforward trajectories of a trolley are derived in an overhead travelling crane for quick suppression of residual oscillation in a hoisting load by using vibration manipulation function. Since residual vibration of a linear oscillator can be suppressed or emerged by moving the base along the function, the same effect can be acquired by deciding intermittent acceleration of the trolley. By deciding the route of the load as that of linear oscillation, proper trajectory can be determined under the influence of nonlinearity and the elevation/descendent of the load.

Road noise, excited by road roughness, is one of the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness). Tires greatly influence the level of NVH experienced in the vehicle. Thus, tire vibration characteristics impact the spectra of road noise. This paper describes our research of tire dynamics using low DOF model. First, we built tire dynamics model based on thin cylindrical shell theory. This model can express all modes below 200Hz. Second, we performed vibration analysis on the contact and rolling condition and clear up the vibration characteristics analytically.

This paper describes the equivalent mechanical and electrical models of vibration suppression systems using piezoelectric elements. All vibration modes of the host structure are included in the equivalent mechanical and electrical models proposed in this paper. Using these equivalent models, the coupling between the original vibration modes of the host structure can be considered. The equivalent mechanical and electrical models are theoretically derived. Using these equivalent models, not only the mechanism of the vibration suppression can be understood with ease but also simulations using conventional software become possible.

"Kana-ami" is a kind of metal wire network in Japan, which was once prevailed many years ago in the old Japan and has been decreased in the development of social industrialization. In previous research, the characteristics of the "Kana-ami" hexagonal structure were clarified, the metal wire net of "Kana-ami" made by expert presented the convex shape in vertical direction so that helps buffer the fall. The results confirmed the superiority of the product made by expert. In this research, the actual structure of "Kana-ami" was further clarified by numerical observation. And the advantage of the expert's product was found. The three-dimensional analysis method was applied to present the different actual structure.

Hand lay-up fabrication has been used for forming composite structures since ancient times as it can be performed as long as the mold, skills, and materials are available. On the other hand, the hand lay-up fabrication work itself relies on human skills, which means that the finish differs according to the operator carrying out the work, the quality of the product differs among parts depending on the ease of forming, and that defects such as bubbles tend to occur easily. In this study, the experiment quantified techniques that are not visibly apparent and considered to be tacit knowledge.

In the present study, a macroscopic nonlocal constitutive equation for the elastic material having periodical microstructure is proposed. To estimate the strain energy caused by the macroscopic strain gradient, the relationship between strain gradient and its work conjugate higher order stress is formulated. Strain energy required for the macroscopic strain gradient of two-phase composite material was estimated by the local, nonlocal and fullscale FEM models. Nonlocal and fullscale FEM models estimate the strain energy depend on the size of periodical microstructure.

Sound fields separated by an elastic plate with a small hole are studied. Sound absorption coefficient and acoustic impedance are calculated and are compared with the measured ones. Furthermore, vibration modes of the air and the panel are discussed at the maximum value of sound absorption coefficient.

This research considers that relationship between pad stiffness in static condition and vibrating condition. It is clarified that pressure dependency of pad stiffness is the cause of squeal in a past study. The stiffness when vibration is added to a pad is more than twice as large as the stiffness in static condition. Semi-static stiffness of the pad is measured by applying large-amplitude and low-frequency vibration to the pad. The pressure-displacement characteristics of the pad exhibited hysteresis. When the amplitude is decreased, average stiffness of the pad increase and it approaches the stiffness in dynamic condition from static stiffness.

Analysis of balancing balls of auto-balancer for reducing non-synchronous motion in passing critical speed is performed. Equations of motion of the auto-balancer mechanism including balancing balls are modeled based on non-stationary vibration model. Time-variant dynamics of auto-balancer in accelerating the motor is simulated. The conditions for reducing the non-synchronous motion are explored by simulating the mass and the viscous drag coefficient of the balls. The non-synchronous motion and residual balancing error are suppressed by tuning the viscous drag coefficient and the mass of the balance balls properly.

Engine enclosures are one of the methods that reduce air borne noise from engine. It is effective to predict the sound pressure by numerical simulation, when we design the enclosure. However, accurate sound source model is needed for the numerical simulation. Inverse-numerical acoustic analysis (INA) has been proposed as a method of constructing sound source model. In this study, the sound source model of diesel engine was constructed using INA. In addition, using the sound source model and boundary element method, the surrounding noise of engine enclosure was predicted, and the effectiveness of sound source model was shown.

The ignition delay time and laminar burning velocity of i-Octane were calculated using by 3 models of elementary reaction schemes. As optimization of reaction rate constants in the reduced scheme by Tsurushima et al. with 33 species and 38 reactions, the calculation precisions of both of ignition delay time and laminar burning velocity were improved. Furthermore, the importance of the tuning of elementary reaction to laminar burning velocity was confirmed by the calculation of spherical propagating flame using optimized reduced scheme.

Unsteady numerical analyses with high resolution for premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) combustion were carried to make clear the effects of spatial fuel concentration distribution on ignition and combustion characteristics. Detailed chemical kinetics with elementary reactions and multi-component diffusion for n-heptane fuel system were considered to realize accurately the auto-ignition and combustion process. HCCI combustion analysis with CHEMKIN-Pro were also carried out by changing widely the condition of the premixed charge and the data for auto-ignition condition were accumulated. By comparing these results, we discuss the applicability of the multi-zone modeling for PCCI combustion.

Fatigue limit estimation based on the dissipated energy measurement using infrared thermography has been getting an increasing attention in various industries. In this study, mechanism of energy dissipation is investigated in relation with formulation of slip bands for JIS type 316L stainless steel through observation of slip bands by optical microscope and atomic force microscope. It was found that the energy dissipation was related to activity of slip band and estimated fatigue limit is corresponding to crack initiation stress level of the material. Phase information of energy dissipation was investigated and was applied to the accuracy improvement of dissipated energy measurement for fatigue damage estimation.

Our objective is to analyze both tensional and bending stress of bolted joints under eccentric force. In the analysis, it is necessary to consider the effect of partial separation between structural interfaces. There are three limited conditions, which have some difference between our analysis and previous reports, (1) embedded bolted joints (2) thin clamped plate (3) large eccentric force. It is important to clarify the dynamic strength of the long bars which are common elements in the machine structures. In addition, studies on dynamic buckling phenomena are insufficient as compared with those in the quasi-static loading studies. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the mechanism of dynamic buckling phenomena and to evaluate their buckling loads. In this research, we study the dependence of the buckling load on loading velocity, and also clarify the effect of bar size on them in the loading velocity range from 0.001 to 1m/s.

This paper describes an estimation method of the structural failure probability based on a directional importance sampling simulation combined with a partition of the region method. A structural failure probability is formulated by using a radial variable and a directional vector. Radial variable samples are generated from a truncated chi-square p.d.f: defined outside the fl-sphere region. Directional vector samples are determined by an importance sampling p.d.f centered on the design point and directional importance sampling probability densities at the respective sampled directions are evaluated numerically. Numerical examples show that the proposed method gives accurate estimations of structural failure probabilities efficiently.

The fatigue behavior of partially stabilized zirconia added to 3 mol % Y_2_O3 was studied with reference to the tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation by static and cyclic fatigue tests for both the specimens annealed at 200℃ for 10hr in air and that at 700℃ for 10hr in vacuum, respectively. As the results, both the higher fatigue strength and the higher crack growth resistance can be obtained by the anneal at 700℃ for 10hr in vacuum, whereas the remarkable degradation in the lifetime by cyclic loading was also observed.

In rolling contact fatigue(RCF), cracks are usually initiated from inclusions under the surface and propagated to the contact surface. In the present study, RCF cracks was observed using synchrotron radiation computed laminography(SRCL) in SPring-8. The specimen with flaking damage was measured by SRCL. It was found that two types of cracks, vertical crack and horizontal crack under the contact surface, which is typically rolling fatigue crack, was measured by SRCL. The ex-situ fatigue tests and SRCL observation was conducted in SPring-8. It was found that the horizontal crack initiated after the vertical crack initiated and propagated along inclusion. It is considered that the vertical crack is an important factor of flaking process, and the shape and length of inclusion affect the initiation and propagation of vertical crack.

The three dimensional grain mapping technique for polycrystalline material, called X-ray diffraction contrast tomography (DCT), was conducted in SPring-8 (Super Photon ring-8 GeV), which is the brightest synchrotron radiation facility in Japan, and the conditions of measurement and data processing procedure have been obtained. Developed technique was applied to a commercially pure iron, and an austenitic stainless steel. The shape and location of grain could be determined by DCT using the apparatus in a beam line of SPring-8. Total misorientation of an individual crystalographic plane of a specific grain during fatigue test of the steels were measured. In fatigue test of the stainless steel, thetotal misorientastion of {111} planes increased with number of cyccles. Among {111} planes, the amount of change depended on Schmid factor, i.e., the change was higher for planes with larger Schmid factor. For the commercially pure iron, the total misorientastion of {110} planes increased with number of cyccles. The amount of change, however, did not depend on Schmid factor because of pencile-glide. There is an urgent need for developing high-performance nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods to assist in effective maintenance of aging infrastructures. Recently, use of infrared cameras in nondestructive testing has been attracting increasing interest, as they provide highly efficient remote and wide area measurements. Automobiles have to be improved in the energy absorption capacity from the viewpoint of the collision safety, while the environment issues and the fuel efficiency have increased the need for the reduction of weight. In order to satisfy these contradictory requirements, thin-walled polygonal tubes are often used as energy absorbing members. In this study, the effects of crush angle, number of corners and testing speed on the crushing behavior of those tubes were investigated by quasi-static (strain rate: 10^<-4>/s), low-speed (10^<-2>/s) and dynamic (10^1/s) oblique crushing tests.

The two dimensional size measurement device was introduced in the low-cycle impact fatigue tests of SS400 smooth and notched bodies, which enabled us to clarify the local strain variation of a specimen easily and precisely for long test time duration over 24 hours. In the experiments, a circular test area of 40mm's diameter was provided by the sensor device, and the smallest cross-section area of a specimen was automatically chosen, and its size was recorded out with the time intervals of 40ms to is to a portable computer. The time variation of the specimen' s longitudinal strain was then able to be estimated by using the smallest cross-ection area size and the incompressible condition of test materials.

Sonic-IR, which is based on the detection of the temperature rise due to frictional heating at the defect faces under ultrasonic excitation, has an advantage in the detection of closed defects. However, in conventional sonic-IR method, to directly input an acoustic energy from ultrasonic transducer to the test area via ultrasonic horn, which may give scratches and deformation in the test object. In this study, we develop a new sonic-IR method using ultrasonic wave inputted through water, and practicability of the proposed method for the detection of fatigue crack is experimentally investigated.

Friction and wear characteristics of titanium compound coating and DLC were investigated from a consideration from hardness and young's modulus of coatings. Friction coefficient increasing and decreasing of specific wear rate were observed at high H/E value, where H is hardness and E is young's modulus. From these results, H/E value was considered to be a useful parameter for a selection of tribological useful coating.

The effect of microshot peening on the surface characteristics and fatigue life of spring steel was investigated. In the experiment, the projective method of the microshot was of the compressed air type. The microshots were high-carbon cast steel and cemented carbide, and the workpiece used was the commercially spring steel. The surface layer of the workpiece was sufficiently deformed by microshot peening. The microshot peening process was very efficient in improving the fatigue life of spring steel. It was found that the use of the microshot was found to cause a significantly enhanced peening effect for spring steel.

The effect of shot peening on the bending strength of an AZ31 magnesium alloy pipe was investigated. In the experiment, extruded pipes of 22 mm 0.D., 18 mm I.D., and 2 mm wall thickness were used. Shot peening treatments were applied to the surface of the workpiece using an impeller-type or an air-type peening machine. It was found that multiple deformation twins were formed during shot peening. The results of the present study revealed that the compressive yield stress of shot-peened pipes is strongly related to their bending strength.

For the estimation of elastic parameters for a beam model of embolization coil, this paper performs the computational simulations of tensile/compress and bending tests of the coil. The coil configuration is constructed based on the observation results by the electron microscope. The load-displacement relationship for respective mechanical tests are investigated by means of the finite element method with consideration for the contacts between coil wires itself. The tensile stiffness of the coil is in excellent agreement with the theoretical solution, whereas the compressive and bending stiffness of the coil is relatively hard due to the contacts between the coil wires.

A steady and transient CHF due to exponentially increasing heat inputs to a horizontal vertically-oriented platinum ribbon with different surfaces in a pool of water at pressure and liquid subcooling were investigated. The period of exponentially increasing heat generation was varied from 10 ms to 20 s. The values of surface roughness and contact angles were measured prior to pool boiling experiment. The pool boiling experimental results such as transient CHF on ribbon heater were compared with previous correlation. It was occurred that the transient CHF on short period is higher than long period. In addition, the increasing rate of transient CHF in short period is higher than the prediction of existing equation.

Thermal design of industrial vehicles needs to estimate temperature of coolant for engines to prevent overheating. Temperature of cooling air into a radiator, however, is unknown if the vehicle has unknown heat sources on the windward of the radiator. It is therefore difficult to estimate the coolant temperature with good accuracy. This study has made some suppositions regarding the unknown heat quantity in excavators to obtain empirical formulae of the cooling air temperature. The formulae have been obtained by regression analysis based on experiments. Finally, the formulae have been validated using another excavator.

Structural materials used on system supplying energy must stand at high temperatures. The information about dependence of thermo-physical properties for those materials on temperatures is demanded to evaluate its heat resistance. So we develop a new method to measure thermo-physical properties using an infrared heating at high temperature. This technique uses a heat source to keep a temperature of sample as that to change the temperature. This report describes a comparison between analyses of heat conduction and experiment of that and dependence of time lag having relation to thermal diffusivity and changing temperature having relation to heat capacity on temperatures.
