Piezo-electricity of quartz is used to measure the rapidly varying pressure in the cylinder. The electric charge due to the pressure is applied to the grid of a valve, and the plate current which varies as the grid voltage is recorded with an oscillograph. By this method indicator diagrams can be taken with sufficient sensitivity and accuracy even at the speed of 5, 000 r.p.m. or more. Another merit is that the record can be taken at any distance from the engine.

The equations to calculate stresses and displacements of single or compound cylinders under uniform pressure are deduced from the stress function F which satisfies ▽^<4F>=0. The axial displacements or axial stresses are easily calculated from the equations. Next the effects of the force in the axial direction at the junction of compound cylinders due to cooling contraction are considered by using Bessel's function which satisfies ▽^<4F>=0 and numerical examples are offerd.

The 8-cylinder 90°-V type engine is now much used for aerial navigation, but one of the great defects of this type is that it has strong vibration. As the symmetrical crankshaft is generally used, the second harmonic of the inertia force due to reciprocating mass remains unbalanced, and the resultant becomes a strong unbalanced force. If the shape of crankshaft is made so as to balance the second harmonic of the inertia force, the resultant of the primary becomes a couple the magnitude of which is proportional to the square of number of revolutions and the direction of which is rotating with the same speed as the crankshaft. So this couple can be easily balanced by attaching balance masses of proper magnitude at proper positions. Thus by using the unsymmetrical crankshaft one of the greatest defects of this type can be eliminated.

The piece work system which is now adopted at the Oi Works is explained. Its merits and demerits are disoussed. The piece-man rate system and several premium systems are examined with a view of deciding whether or not they are well adopted at the works. Finally the proposed wage system is explained, the essential points of which are as follows : (a) the work is given to the workers in form of the piece-man rate, (b) the day wages are paid for the actual working hours, (c) for the hours saved by the workers the mean day wages in each shop are paid, (d) in cases of joint works, wages on the time saved, calculatey by the above method, are divided among the workers in proportion to the actual day wage earned by each worker plus twice the actual working days served.
