This paper assumes that the flow of water in the free whirling chamber of the head casing for an axial flow turbine is irrotational and symmetrical with respect to the vertical axis of a central core rotating with a constant angular velocity, and deduces that the ratio of radius of the central core to that of the circular exit of the casing may be expressed as a function of the direction of flow determined by the guide vanes and the ratio of the height of the casing cover above the circular exit to its radius and further this ratio is independent of the velocity of flow and the boundary pressure of the central core. It is also shown that the boundary pressure of the core at the level of the casing exit can not be lower than the actual suction pressure caused by a tail pipe, in spite of the far lower pressure prevailing at the centre of the core. These results of deduction were verified with a fair agreement by a number of experiments done by the Writer.
