We have observed experimentally the ambipolar diffusion in a plasma, produced by microwave breakdown, in He and Ar contained in a metal chamber. The chamber is immersed in a static magnetic field and the gas pressure range, used in the experiment, goes from 0.2 to 1 mmHg. The experimental results are not in agreement with the short circuit theory proposed by Simon and extended by Golant, Allis and others to plasmas contained in a metal chamber and an experiment by Geissler. In our experiment, the assumption by Golant or allis may not be generally valid. Some limitations or improvements of the thory would be necessary to explain our experimental results.
