The possibility of observing the collective thermal scattering of co
2 laser light (wavelength 10.6 μ
m) from plasmas is discussed in terms of the laser power requirement, the necessary optical system and the detector performance. Based on the positive result of the estimate, the experimental measurement has been performed on a θ pinch plasma (

ev), yielding the ion temperatures from the spectrally resolved scattered light.
