In the national Japanese PE curriculum, the phrase “activities releasing body and mind” refers to multiple activities aimed at body awareness, mental and physical adjustment, and interpersonal communication. These activities are open ended and draw on various personal experiences. However, this means that their content is not objectively clear, which has resulted in some questioning of the activities’ value. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate students’ conception of activities releasing body and mind to present clear evidence relating to the content of activities. Through a qualitative research design using analysis of free responses acquired through the balloon method and interviews, the following results were extracted. Through activities releasing body and mind, student formed concepts of feeling refreshed, positive feeling toward movement, and the value of movement. Second, students formed concepts of awareness of the body relating to its status, their own existence as living organisms, sensations of their living bodies, differences in physical build and characteristics, understanding mechanisms of movement, and adjusting force exerted by the body. Third, students formed concepts of feelings of unity through movement, understanding and respecting others, awareness of the movements and feelings of others through activities, and the value and ingenuity of communication skills. Lastly, students formed concepts of cooperative achievement and ingenuity to solve problems. Specifically, this problem-solving involved feelings of cooperative achievement, wisdom, strategy and ingenuity, and effort and challenge.
