    This is an approach based on a basic investigation of the familiarity of the product. What do we watch and think when we buy some products? Then, what is hindden in our consideration? And how dose the product influence us? We expect to be some relation between the product and the people. And then we investigated into the familiarity of the product by the questionnaire. As the result of the analysis, we found a relation between the product and the people. The meaning makes the product to the cultural one. And now I am going to find the way of the user oriented designing process named “usernize”.

    Scooter(50cc motor cycle) is one of most popular one which we can ride. We can ride scooter at ease. If it is traffic jam, we could reach goal easily by scooter. Scooter has large luggage space which called met-in in Japan. This electoric motor cycle which I propose is smaller than met-in. We can put it into met-in. We can take it with scooter any where. This electoric motor cycle has bicycle suspention, we can change it with more long stroke suspention or short type which we want. Its motor, battery is same sise with the one which I bought for reference(it is popular model). Popular medel has 4inch hard wheel but my proposal model has 6inch pumped up wheel.

    Throughout the regions of Asia, scooters have been used as a necessary citizen transportation product. In order to clarify the image of the scooter style, the questionnaire survey had been conducted in China and Taiwan. 24 typical scooter photos as the typical style images have been evaluated with 22 adjectives throughout 5 stages. The results of the factor analysis to the survey data revealed the principle word. In Taiwan, the first is Individuality and second one is Stability. In China, the first is Stability and second is Softness. The style image scatter gram map should be shown the distinctive difference between the two countries user image. We believe that these surveys would help to the future transportation design developments in Asia regions.

    Eye-gaze Interface has used the monitoring screen for GUI interface on Personal Computer. But there is not Eye-gaze system for real objects controlled system. In this study, we designed Prototype system in the Real Objects Control Eye-gaze Interface. In this system, we make two rype, which was a real object reacted to users gazing, 1. Audio controlled 2. Light controlled. Using the system, as a result, it was possible user to control Real objects control for Eye-gaze interface. And we found using real objects, as gazing point was very effective for gazing stability.

    Referring to the “Concept Making” process discussed in Xerox group, this report examines the effect and issues of the common process in which image words and image collages are used as tools. The keywords of the process of making the design concept (hereafter design goal) are 1) “with customers,” 2) “worldwide,” and 3) “collaboration of designers.” To create design concepts, in addition to using the indirect information on market trend and customers that is available in the company, sharing the same design goal in the form of design attributes between designers and customers from the initial phase of the design process will greatly improve the design to be created with users.

    We have used the computer at office work for last few years. So reclining position of work accounted for 38% at our questionnaire in 1996. It is needed to support worker’s arm in that position. I think that worker recognized the value of arm-support than before. So I researched the value of arm-support by experiment. Consequently many subjects think that it is important than before at reclining position.

    I study new designing system for the children by the profiling analysis. I investigate about the relevance of growth of children and the role of intellectual training toys. I catch widely the environment surrounding them and carry out new classification. It enable them to playing toys in safety. This research is for the children who play more and study.

    A report about product development support to a company and the area that Industrial Technology Institute, Miyagi Prefectural Government went from 1987 to 2000. About support of product development, I did it with design support technique as an examination research organization from some examples. I made a tray man an example with a flow of development, and other examples are similar, too. It is spoken in support of introduction, indirect support, direct support for an area and a company by an example. And I did it with design suport process of Miyagi, product development support of a district. (figure 4).

    In this study, we made the audio product the case study and extracted the optimal specification of the product in each user group from which a preference type differs using the rough set and the nueral network(Identify Mapping Model). Rough set and identify mapping model have the common feature of “informational compression” and “obtaining various solutions.” Then we compared reducts with a high numerical C.I. using rough set and the optimal solution which all searched solution space using Identify Mapping Model, and considered each feature.

    Recently, rough set theory (Pawlak, 1982) which can acquire the combinations of the fewest attributes (formal elements) for forming the result (ex; images) have been applied. Then, we clarified relation between formal elements and images using the rough set using categories added with degrees of comformity, using cars’ front view design as a case study, and considered the feature of the knowledge acquired by this technique. Furthermore, we tried to apply the acquired knowledge to design concept planning. Consequently, we considered that available knowledge for a design concept could be acquired by the rough set using categories added with degrees of comformity.

    Contrary to the logic of mass production consumer’s mind is diversified and personalized into niche markets. Now the speed for that has multiplied. More and more people have interest in and request for “Originality conceptuarize products”. It becomes more necessary to create concept suitable for the design prosess. The more far away from the prior concept, the more new concepts can be discovered. In processing it is important to get rid of our stereotypes and to make imagination clear from them. In addition to the prior imagination supportive method as will make a consideration to the methodology approached from the various angles. In this case we will take examples of mobile phone to prove that plausibility.

    As the quality of a life and individuality become important, in order to appeal our human and creative life, collaborative design in which allows various subjects’ participation becomes important too. In this study, we recognize the collaborative design as the user oriented relation between the producer and the user. Classification analysis on the user participation levels in design process and the types of user participation in several cases carried out through study of some examples and interview research. From the results, we discussed on the possibilities of user participation in case of mass production system comparing with the case of community design.

    The purpose of this study is to develop a design approach to artifacts from life-cycle design viewpoint under network computing ages. Based on life-cycle of artifacts with human, spiral design is the proposed design approach to artifacts under network computing ages. To realize spiral design approach, SD matrix is proposed as tools for designer. SD matrix is the tool to adapt all users and all user experience of life-cycle. The x-axis is used for user groups, the y-axis is used for user scenario and the z-axis is used for user task. Based on three axes, three kind of design information matrix such as matrix for each user task, matrix for each user and matrix for each user scenario can be made by designer.

    Design process can be represented as transforming process from linguistic description of design objective to physical and visual form of it. On the basis of this thought, an experiment was made to know structure of designer’s creative thinking process. In the experiment, the subject’s behavior was monitord by using video cameras from the viewpoint to grasp the relations between searching modes and stages of thinking process. From the results, a typical model of creative thinking process was proposed. This model represents the designer’s thinking paths by using several searching modes in corresponding stages to reach the final form.

    This research is investigation about the usability of some video magnifiers and it progresses in the basic design of the video magnifier suitable for educational environment. In Research 1, we investigated some use situations of the videomagnifier in our university. Division for the Visually Impaired has about 130 students, and about 10% of them uses it. It is used in the lecture rooms, the library, and the student dormitories. In Research 2, we investigated the procedure of operation and the usability of four types to four students. This method is observed and recorded from - start of use, Adjustment of quality of image, Reading and writing, to the end of use. Moreover, we performed the hearing. Based on Research 2 and the hearing, we analyzed for every model of machine about operation.

    The universalization of Information Design for IT weak has been advocated for long time. But the one especially for auditory handicapped people has not been developed well and is left far behind in this field. It is mostly due to the fact that degree of handicap varies widely from person to person. We have come to the idea that we may be able to give the uniform information to differently handicapped people by fully utilizing the latest multimedia technologies. We materialized this idea in the development of educational contents which help auditory handicapped people’s e-mail operation. Through this development work, we practiced human-oriented design concept in the design education.

    Observation is one of the important means in studying information design. This is an abstract of the experiment done in a class at university given a theme, “ordering a dish.” A clerk uses a handy terminal in restaurants. That is for professional users who had specially trained how to use. Let us start with a suggestion that we design a machine for common users to give an order. The process of teaching is as follows. 1) Observe users and restaurants, 2) Analyze the process of ordering a dish, 3) Interface the equipment with users, 4) Publish and consideration. The reason for choosing a theme “ordering a dish” is as follows. A) The act is of daily performance, B) Cultivate one’s insight, C) Variation of work is expected, D) Combination is possible, E) Promote friendship with the research members.

    Each child has his/her own personality. It is said that age 4 is the critical point for child’s growth from the viewpoint of making his/her personality. The experiences in this age have greatly influence to make one’s basic personality. The purpose of this research is to know the relations of person-object-person through observation of a kindergarten and review of recent materials. Classitifications of the child’s plays and toys are made for this purpose. The authors analyse those materials and pointed out to be thought on the 4 aged child’s plays and toys.

In spite of a real task, the method and technique are sure stocked in the laboratory for the production in the college. Needless to say, it is a great experience for a student to participate in editorial task of a real magazine. As a methodology of the education, educator must not only depend on a company but also have the initiative.

    For keeping life environment and reuse of rice straw and chaff (rice shell), ecofish project was run as the Environmental education on Inagaki Junior High School at Aomori Prefecture. Ecofish which is made of rice straw and carbonized chaff can be reused for compost after gray water was purified by it. Some merits of this activity are follows; reuse of rural material, purifying of gray water, advance of community connection and development, reduce of chemical compost, harvest of safety foods and so on. By analyzing of T-BOD it is shown that gray water was purified. According to the impression reports from almost students, it is shown that positive thinking is advanced in their mind for keeping life environment.

    When a designer does the decision making, it has some turning points. They are stages in the design process where the theme, the color, the material and the shape are decided. It is often influenced by the opinions of other persons and the environment. Therefore, the environment in management can produce a good influence for the conception and the activity of the designer. In this paper, it is suggested the decision making of a designer is strongly influenced by “the Design management of the environment”. It is considered by using the case study of design management in the branch office of Design Center in Hitachi Ltd., where the author was working at that time in 1988.

    Presently, Honda has been adopting a catch phrase saying, “small is smart”. The phase means, “with agility like that of small companies, to challenge new product development to quickly provide products in the market that will satisfy the user needs”. The first product created with this concept is “FIT.” It is a car created with the much more refined rugby approach, and successfully led a van of cars to be lined up in the “small car series,” which Honda will start to develop.

    In recent years, the word “collaboration” is frequently mentioned by many companies as a keyword in new product development. Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is a noteworthy company as having places great importance on collaboration in their creating products long before the word was recognized. Honda is extremely conscious of “how well to design the collaboration and manage tasks successfully.” Such a high consciousness has been inherited ceaselessly from “the first Civic” launched in 1972 until “Fit” presently selling well. This report discusses the frame of “design management applying collaboration” of Honda in view of the rugby approach, one of measures of design management.

    In 1964, I joined Honda as their 20th designer. At that time, Honda was full of ardent enthusiasm for “creating four-wheeled cars in real earnest” and ardent expectations for “spreading their fame in the field of four-wheeled car races all over the world.” In these days, I had acquired valuable experiences from the actual new product development activities, learned uncountable lessons, and made them my own knowledge. It was really the time for the “creation of design technologies.” What I can show through the experiences in these days is that “the first phase for the company to take in applying a new design management method should be to privately train designers who will become able to contribute in planning a product strategy through the concept fo learning by doing.”

    This paper discusses the guideline for preservation and promotion of traditional art and craft in Vietnam through surveying the project process of the traditional art and craft village, which is established at Ninh Binh Province. This research based on field surveys, documentary literature, and other sources. As a result of our investigation, the following statements are obtained: (l) The Inter-Regional Cooperation can be constructed by several points of view such as material, design and human as technique of regional resources. And it should be practiced in all over the country for preservation and promotion of traditional art and craft. (2) Regional Development is not always occurred spontaneously, but it is necessary occurring to establish suitable Inter-Regional Cooperation.

    This research conducts to clarify the historical background and the design characteristics of Perng-Lai (Taiwan Lacquer-ware), and aims to investigate the identity of craft industry in Taiwan. The design characteristics of Perng-Lai are as follow: (1) The real scenery of Taiwan is represented as a motif; (2) The vitality of Taiwan is expressed by various original colors; (3) The life and climate of Taiwan is expressed by forcible carving. Perng-Lai can be said as a lacquer design that is most utilizing the identities of Taiwan, and as the basic of design characteristics it has been developed the lacquer-ware culture of Taiwan for future. There are the problems to investigate and enforce the program of recognizing the Perng-Lai for the craftsmen, and to apply for future Taiwan Lacquer-ware lndustry.

    In recent years there is a boom of ‘brand’ issues in a large numiber of companies. Why do we have such a boom now? The one of thinkable reasons is in the fear to China and Korea who are going to catch up Japan in the near future. On the other hand if we could have a good corporate image, it would be possible to get more profit too. However, we do not know the certain way of brushing up a brand image, especially marketing people and designers in companies are likely not to have enough konwledge and skill. This report is to show some clues to the solution for design management.

    The Japanese student’s room has been filled with many products but it’s space is very narrow. In order to clarify the actual living condition, we rescarched the plane view room sketches showing the products and room configuration. These plane view sketches were used as the database of relationship analysis. The living flow frequency between products had been analyzed by Dematel method. It should be clear that there is a distinctive living flow pattern. Such as the Kotatsu could be a base of living configuration which named Home-Position in the student room. These distinctive living patterns would be suggested the design for many life products and for semi-Japanese life-styles.

    The outline of the second survey to find out the basic factors for designing the sick room of hospice is reported. In this survey, the respondents evaluated the photos of various types of bedroom acc-cording to the five-grade system on likes and dislike. As the rasult, most of the respondents selected light, open, kindhearted and well-ordered designs. In the opposite, the designs overemphasized specific style were disliked as well as the dark or solitary spaces. In additions, the respondents answered the related questions on favorite scenery, main color of the sickroom, articles to bring in. As for the favorite scenery, most of the respondents selected the natulal sceneries. And it was interested that the sceneries are not the pure naturel but artifical to a certain degree.

    This paper discusses Kitaoji Rosanjin (1883-1959) who managed the Hoshigaoka-Saryo (Japanese restaurant) at Tokyo and Osaka since 1924 to 1936 as “SPACE PRODUCER”. This research analyzes and investigates a book about Rosanjin and his Hoshigaoka-Saryo. This research is tried to read the meaning of his behavior and an ideology. As the result, it found his idea of “to coordinate a space”, “to entertain a guest” and “the fusion tradition and modern”. He respected Japanese tradition based on the mind of a tea ceremony, and made much of “the mind to entertain person”. And as that means, he adopted a foreign culture. It found that Kitaoji Rosanjin did “The space coordination which made ‘food’ a nucleus and synthetic producing with the mind to entertain person” and “Traditional spirits and technology is taken over, and it makes use of it in the present day” in the Hoshigaoka-Saryo.

    This paper describes The Furoshiki (Japanese wrapping cloths) and its development. The Emakimono (Japanese picture scrolls) and some remains are regarded on the designs including functions, forms, and ways of utilizations as living tools. It is obtained: (1) The Furoshiki was initiated in the late 6th century, the Asuka period. Two kinds of design are found in the remains of the prince Shotoku. (2) The Emakimono in Nara until Muromachi era, contains varieties of designs which were tightly connected to social backgrounds and temporal rules. Beyond the difference of sexes, generations, and social positions, it has been used widely to represent feelings of prey, respect with utilities of package, transportation and ceremonies.

    This study is for researching regional images with the concurrent-work method which was originally developed for workshops to make good collaboration with many regional residents including children or elder parsons. This method has unique characteristics like concurrent image work, concurrent presentation and evaluation. It also notices Kansei-like (= emotional) ways of expression like color selection or drawings instead of words. We introduced it to study regional images of lbaraki prefecture in Japan. The clear difference and commonality of images among 5 areas of the prefecture were visually drawn. This method will be introduced to a practical town planning for Tamari village on the next step.

It is cleared how a character develops the variation of the expression in the animate cartoon from the character’s part, the character’s attribute, the character’s behavior, the point of view such as an expression for the purpose of the systematization of the various elements. As for the difference in the expression with the character of the especially general graphic expression and the character of the animate cartoon expression as well, it is examined.

    Research is advanced about the systematic method to form a CG image. A genre was a little expanded last time from the relation with the field that an experiment is made at the same time with this research, and announced about the “image composition and the music composition”. A new hypothesis is proposed about the factor which forms the general idea which becomes a clue at the grade when an idea has a CG image again this time, and the framework of the material. It pays attention to the “negative factor” which includes the whole of the story.

    This research is aiming at expressing attractive “motion” pictorially by applying the modeling algorithm to control a group. Fundamental algorithm is established by the model called Boids, which is announced by Craig Reynolds in 1997. Boids model was applied to try performing the motion of a group on a sphere surface. The purpose of this research is clarifying the process to control a group on a surface of a sphere, and also the characteristics of the expression. It becomes the purpose of this research to clarify the process performs a group’s control on a surface of a sphere, and the feature of the expression.

    The purpose of this paper is a representation of flexibleness in computer graphics. We generate flexiblity images using mass-spring algorithm cloth simulation. The form of our cloth model is square. The cloth model has four constructions of spring connection. The motion of cloth is generated by the movement of center or corner cloth points. The movement of that points is based on a sine curve and the various motions are generated by changing its parameters. And we introduce the constraint points and arrangement patterns, such as piled up and stretched. As a result, we represented flexiblity images in animation.

    Expressive wrinkles are important components to enhance the realism of facial expression in computer graphics. In this paper, we propose expressive wrinkle generation model for 3D face. This model consists of three structures: skeleton, virtual muscles, and skin. The skeleton is useful for placing of virtual muscles. The virtual muscles are deformed with wrinkle points and bulge points. Wrinkle points generate wrinkle lines and moved by simple algorithm like bellows. Bulge points effect to bulging muscles in the middle of wrinkle points. The skin has a surface parallel to muscular direction. These three structures are unified with wrinkle generation model based on anatomy for artists and we generate skin wrinkles.

    In this paper we present a new NPR technique to generate pastel-like computergraphics image. First of all, we generate the pastel stroke model from parameters that are extracted from 3D object. Next, for each stroke model we add pigment adhesion model that consider paper texture, the change of pressure applied to the paper according to different drawing techniques and the secondary colors resulting from overlapping strokes. After that we render these models. The generated image has pastel-like feature and at the same time all the objects can suffer any transformation. Also, changing parameters gives some other drawing effects that we want.

    The purpose of this study is to reconsider the environmental graphics. When we think it narrowly in the context of contemporary design, it includes just a few items; outdoor advertizements, public sign-systems, colour plannings and so on. But if we part from the context, many kinds of visual presentations are found and we recognize that our ancestor used various visual presentations at the every aspects of human life. Then we tried to give a new definition of environmental graphics firstly. Secondly, we tried to confirm the extension of them. Thirdly, we tried to arrange them. Lastly, we tried to consider the relation between environmental graphics and supergraphics. As a conclusion, we recognized many kinds of graphic matters in history and in premitive world by a new point of view. We arranged them into four fields. We believe this research awaken us the significance of environmental graphics.

    The purpose of this study is to reconsider the process of appearance and the background of Supergraphics, furthermore studies the meaning of it. The result showed as follows.: The Supergraphics appeared within the trend of overcoming about Functualism in modern Architecture. The name, Supergraphics, was granted to the interior cordinations in Sea Ranch Condominiums, the works of Charles Moore, American architect, for the first time. The unbinding in it has changed the image of architecture space, proposed the existence style of new architecture. And we can infer the effect of architect like Louis I. Kahn, Luis Barragan, and Robert Venturi on the appearance of Supergraphics from this study.

    Semantic Differential Method has been conducted over materials, colors and shapes of fiber. As a result of a factor analysis, the images of textile are constructed by surface and mass which was felt through tactile impression and a sense of values and emotional stiffness which are sensed visually. A sublimity is added for knitted fabrics combined with the above. It was found that human recognizes a type of materials first and the luminosity of the materials second. The type of colors and the shapes are recognized after that.

    We are interested whether the apparent weight for the colored object can be divided into several elemental factors; for example, depressive feelings, the subjective vector determined by gravity, subjective vector perpendicular to the surface of the colored object, and so on. The result indicates that the weight impression cannot be divided into several elemental factors. Also we interested how hue of the colored object affect the perceived weight. The observer judged that Yellow is heavier than Purple and Blue. This suggest that hue is effective in determining the apparent weight of the colored objects.

    In a character design, a face design is mentioned as most important factor. Then, the female character in comics and animation is used as a case study, we performed the investigation and analysis of a relation between the form-features(an outline, eyebrows, an eye, a nose, a mouth) and images in a face. Moreover, we verified the possibility of prediction of the image from the form-feature and transferring people’s feature in a character.

    If people can do the tactile appreciation to a solid artwork, they may build up an image different from visual appreciation. However, the case studies that the appreciation of a solid artwork was analyized quantitatively are’t so much. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to make the system to analyze tactile appreciation using a plaster sculpture and touch sensors. We made the sculpture placed 32 metals on the surface equally, the sensor box integrated 32 touch sensors, and the program received appreciation data from sensor box and converted inputed data into analysis data. By this system, we could seize some peculiar appreciating behaviors (e.g. People are apt to have a tactile appreciation interest in the convex shape rather than the concave shape).
