Human activities are influenced by their knowledge and skills which are got from their experiences of the real world. We think that human's experiences of the real world influence to human activities on the web. To design web sights in which users act naturally, we conducted experiments to compare the activities between buying books in the real world and buying books on the web. We analyzed the people's activities how people decide to buy books. We separated people's situations into three cases; 1) they already decide books to buy, 2) they do not decide books to buy clearly, 3) they are rambling among books. Using the design factors getting from the results of the analysis, we redesigned the existing web site and verified it. From the verification test, we are sure that "the photos of facing pages" and "lists of temporary selected books" are very useful for book shopping.

In this research, I investigated whether it would be effective when the concept of ZUI (Zoomable User Interface) was used for a website, and proposed the website design using ZUI. ZUI is a kind of concept of GUI (Graphical User Interface). In ZUI, much file data is placed on one plane. And a user accesses to each data, folder, and so on, by zoom-in or zoom-out. Research which takes in this concept to the interface of a software application has been done partly until now. Nevertheless, research which takes in this concept to a website, hardly has been done. In this research, I prepared the samples of the website using ZUI and using the conventional interface, and performed task experiment using these for verification. Consequently, it was proved that ZUI is effective in information search operation.

We performed experiments and considered how different web designs effected WEB accessibility of people with different disabilities. We recorded the operation flow and the length of stay on each page as well as eye tracking and mouse movement. We then analyzed the operation tendencies of each testee. We found some differences between non-impaired and hearing-impaired people in this experiment. We can show and contrast the differences of operation tendencies concretely by video records. There were differences in reaction to text and picture information. We have considered that two user types exist in vision information processing of Web operation. We could build hypothesis regarding the interface (Web accessibility for the hearing -impaired people) based on these experiments.

As for the evaluation of usability or extraction of problems, user testing spends time generally. We propose a method that shortens the time, using operation-log and eye-tracking, made into the example of the user testing of a printer driver. Though the number of the problems currently extracted by this method was equivalent, when compared with the existing method using observation and post-interview, the time spent on analysis was shortened by about 1/4.

This study concerns the possible support system from whichestablish denial expression method to new type of concept and develop toproducts. In this paper, we took examples of two different types of products(mobile phone and paper stand) based on theoretical background forthe method in the precedent conference. We have established the denial expression method based on the normative utilities referred by questioners on paper stand. Then, the authors examine the development of ideas from verbal expression to form expression by denialexpression method. The verbal expression is mainly the variation ofconcept and the authors included the constraints from technical view to develop the form. The authors also came across the way of using which developedby users. Then, through the process, a re-proposed product was gotten.

The purpose of this research is to investigate design thinking as process of the creative thinking process and to understand the feature of design creativity. For the purpose of that, the authors focused onto the knowledge acquisition process in design. Based on the results of previous empirical research, which was illustrated as a thinking path model of design process, the authors discussed and traced the process of designers thinking in order to seize the relationships among the phases in creative thinking process. In this research, the phases of meaning generation were adopted and examined. It was important to be understood as the dynamic relationships between the process of linguistic interpretations and specific analogy by drawings. Finally, the authors proposed a model knowledge acquisition process in design thinking.

Abstract: There is a Japanese expression "mi-ni-tsukeru" which generally means "to learn" or "to acquire". The word "mi" can be translated as "body", and "tsukeru" as "to attach" or "to equip". With this in mind, I chose the word "to embody" to best express "mi-ni-tsukeru". This expression includes the embodiment of both skill and knowledge. Since the main purpose of design is to create tools, "The Embodiment of Tools" is the main focus here.In this paper, I have interpreted this phenomenon by Autopoiesis and Enactivism. I believe that this approach will help develop new aspects of usability research in both a fundamental and an applicatory way.

This paper discusses about describing the using scene by scenario based on user's context. It is unable to develop the new cellular phones without thinking of the scenarios and the contexts of daily work, because user has some scenarios of using scene that based on user's contexts. It is shown that the same situations(place, time zone, etc.) have different ones of operation because of the purpose of using. In result, some levels of the importance degree to the act between each item are based on the purpose, the description of the scene is represented using hierarchical structure given the degree of importance.

Designers are doing some decision makings at the turning point stage in the design process. Those causes are based on not only own intention but also stimulation or the opinion from the outsiders. We investigated the design processes of the graduation studies at our university. As a result, it has been understood that "Internal conflict" and "External stimulation" influence it mutually at some decision making stages. And it has been understood to do important decision makings at four following stages. Those stages are "Awareness", "Understanding", "Mutual agreement", and "Implementation". It might be also useful to investigate the design process about the commercialized products for the research of the management methods in the design organization.

The aim here in the report is to study and validate how it influences thinking process by introducing the idea-generation method of brainwriting(BW) to the first stage of space designing with the group work. We've set the subject for the space designing and analyzed comparatively. The method of our analysis is based on the data of 2 groups. One is the group which supports the idea of BW. The other is the group which advances the idea freely. In the first report, we tried to classify the procedures for making proposal document. The result is following. We've got 5 patterns through the procedures for making proposal document. The 1st group's data showed the pattern to develop their thought in most cases.

The results are following. 1) When we paid attention to the supporting group of BW, the amount of idea sketch were increased. We've found lots of idea development with sketch even when they make the draft proposal. 2) It was proved that compulsory jumps to abstract thought with BW lead to think developmentally and create better idea.

With a result of this study until now, Characters in using cellular phones were classified with each user group and the difference in the attribute such as time, place and more by the quantification-3. But, the result has vagueness and contradiction, and the characters tend to overlap in different user groups. So in this time, the classification of the using was done by Rough Sets to know the character of details of each user group. Each attribute in using was applied to condition attributes, and each function of cellular phones was applied to decision attributes, we got combination of the attribute, which decided the characteristic of the each group. For example, though it was the same "E-mail" function, a user group exchanges much of short texts at one time, and another group exchange only one of long text at one time. Those characters are most important for each user group. So, the detailed characteristic in using could be described.

Although Rough sets with the nonliner feature is expected in the research of Design evaluation, it is a significant problem how to analyze a great deal of decision rules extracted from a decision matrix. Thus, the method to analyze and evaluate a lot of decision rules based on Covering Index of Rugh sets from a statistical viewpoint would be proposed in this paper (No.1). By the method of the proposal, the view of "Column scores" corresponding to the category score used by Multi-variable analysis was defined and introduced. Therefore, there is a useful advantage that consideration of an analysis result can be performed easily. In addition, this "Column scores" condenses the information on decision rules. The validity of this proposal would be verified using the case study of a digital camera in another paper (No.2).

The method of changing emotion-attitude and image into the concrete form element which can be used as knowledge of a design is one of the fundamental views of design evaluation.Another paper (No.2) proposed a method how to analyze a relationship between image and form element by use of Rough Sets. The purpose of this paper is to verify the proposal of analyzing method using the case study of a digital camera. Consequently, the form elements which materializes an image, such as "modern", "originality" and "smart" are extracted and these form elements which contribute to image especially is specified independently by the analyzing method. Thus, the validity as design methodology is checked.

Tiffany & Co. exhibited the firm's products at the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1876. Some of these products were silver and plated wares, and were displayed in the Main Building of the exhibition. Japanese exhibits were also displayed in the Main Building, so it is likely that the people connected with Tiffany & Co. had a chance to see the Japanese exhibits in the same building. Harper's Weekly of August 12, 1876, reported that Japanese object had been purchased by Mr. Moore of Tiffany's. This means a member of Tiffany & Co. was interested in and possessed Japanese exhibit. In this paper, the relationship between Japanese craftwork and Charles L. Tiffany, Louis C. Tiffany, Edward C. Moore, Christopher Dresser, and Samuel Bing is discussed.

The Ittenschule(1926-1934)was an art and design school established by Johannes Itten in Berlin. Among the instructors at the Ittenschule were painters Shounan Mizukoshi and Yumeji Takehisa and there were two students from the Jiyugakuen, Misses Mitsuko Yamamuro and Kazuko Sasagawa. Until now I have publicized some papers on the details of their activities at the Ittenschule and their acceptance in Japan. To mention specifically, the two students studying abroad from the Jiyugakuen can be said to have played important roles in conveying the Bauhaus education to Japan as well as others who studied at the Bauhaus such as Iwao and Michiko Yamawaki, and Takehiko Mizutani. This presentation further clarifies how Itten's way of thinking in the art/design education and the activities of the Japanese people interrelated, including their mutual interchange and the circumstances in Berlin at that time. The relationship between Itten's artistic thought in modern design and Japan is thus discussed.

Deploring the mid-nineteenth century English eagerness in 'borrowing' various styles from different 'pagan' nations and periods, A. W. N. Pugin, a nineteenth century Gothic adherent, critically described the then current state of English architecture as 'the carnival of architecture.' Drawing particular attention to Pugin's own trenchant references concerning these 'pagan' styles, this paper interprets the way in which the then current state of architecture was seen by Pugin's Gothic-orientated view. An examination of Pugin's personal justification of reviving the 'generated' style of England, the English Gothic, is then set forth.

AbstractBook design is a form of graphic design where printing is an expression means. Book has been constantly transforming, accompanying the changes of printing techniques. Our research is focusing on the changes of book design as it has developed in Japan, and refers to the relation with the development of printing, binding, and paper techniques. We have attempted to verify and analyze what happened during the Meiji era. Pursuing this research, we have analyzed the technical aspects of book design in the Taisho era. The Taisho era is said to have come to the ripening stage of literary art books design. Moreover, it was the period when the techniques which have been introduced from the West have been closely linked with the expression itself. We will define here the characteristics of the book in the Taisho era through an investigation on documents and on the actual books, from the point of view of how the different techniques related to the book have influenced its design.

We developed the teaching materials for courses of web page creation. These materials utilize the viewpoint of Information Design for both teaching process and evaluation.
The Planning Worksheet (PW) enables to specify the theme, purpose, and the target of the site, whereas the Image Plot (IP) and the Category List (CL) allows to describe the site's image to be designed. The IP shows page's images in words, and the CL lists the breakdown of the contents.
After finish creation, students are required to explain how design pages. At this time, these sheets function as a tool to allow both students and teachers to share the idea about the planned pages. We also developed the Standard Design Table (SDT). The SDT helps teachers to evaluate pages in terms of design. What is essential at the class is to train students to able to explain the purpose of their design. Furthermore, we developed rubrics as the platform for the evaluation process.

The purpose of this research is to extract the given condition of the desirable station premises guide map to design. We did this research by collecting cases of the station premises guide map in similar facilities. We investigated several terminal stations and airports in Japan, Belgium, Netherlands. We found that there were four types of the station premises guide map in the aspect of the display form: placard type, print type, computer display type, and tactile type. We also found it was necessary to examine several aspects by the laboratory works. They were the foreign language notation, the number of the coloring, the overlap use of the identical color, and the difference of color contrast.

A Study on Korean Mugunghwa Design It is called a national flower which stands for each nation's symbolic flower. Mugunghwa is Korea's national flower that has been using for a long history of Korea which is a prime national flower. This study is for researching Mugunghwa which is rarely used for practical lives even though it is the most characteristics of Korea, so I studied it in terms of design and I suggest the direction of design development which utilizes Mugunghwa. And I also suggest that extend the scope of utilization of Mugunghwa, and I tried to give an impetus of more variation and advancement of Mugunghwa design afterwards.

In this report, it was analyzed that the record jacket design of the label of jazz "Blue Note Records" from the 1950s to the 60s. The aim of this report is explaining what factor visualized blue note-likeness or jazz-likeness in the record jackets. The investigation about the visual elements of record jackets showed that there was a tendency of "simple and instability" in the design of Blue Note, such as a simple color scheme and an unstable character group. Moreover, the tendency is also in combo organization and improvisation of early modern jazz. Therefore, the factor which visualized blue note-likeness and jazz-likeness is the same tendency in the jacket design and music of Blue Note.

I announce it this time about the structural relations in the "physics layer and the mentality layer" as a horizontal classification.A physical process is formed by natural physics phenomenon and character's action. As for physics layer that it says here, it means the thing which can be perceived even if it comes into being mainly by such a physical process and it is taken to the audience. But, a physical process itself actually occurs by the "law that earth science like law and society law, a human being are mental".It is seldom conscious of the this depth like relations. But,as for the process that a Story maker builds up it structurally, you must be actively conscious of these relations. The power study of the "physics layer and the mentality layer" like structure is made clear, and an author must make a story along the intention from the opposite direction, that is, the inside as for the elucidation.
