In this paper, through analysing William Morris's thoughts and expressions which were situated at the starting point in the history of modern design, we intend to search a clue of problems to think about now. For this purpose, ws are to set our eyes on the conditionts of man and manufacturing at that time. Morris was impassioned not only to design the better and more considered products but also to abolish the ugly products which were made in the atmosphere of "High Victorian Age." Basing on his own ideal that all art ought to be "by the people for the people" in the labouring condition as enjoyable handicraft, Morris himself designed and manufactured wallpapers, the figure work of stained glass, books and their types, and printed textiles, as well as furnishings, carpets and woven upholstery materials. But he could not settle the problem that the handmade products of his firm were to be costly and not to be truly "for the people." In spite of some limitations in his thoughts and expressions, he Morris was firmly one of the pioneers of modern design movements. The obtained results are summarized as follows ; (1) It is not a fair and proper estimation that William Morris was either a mediaevalist or a interectual-Luddites. That art must be rooted on the daily lives of the people is the core of his idea on plastic arts, which modern designers should inherit. (2) Recognizing that the most important for us is to plan and design our daily lives with the mass-produced products in which we must involve our own messages, we designers are to make efforts to grasp the relationships among designed products, men, lives and society mainly by means of field survey.

The defect of today's industrialization is the extinction of the spiritual communication between makers and users. An agreement in spirit between makers and users is an immutable law if the age, the scale and the way of production, or the quality of the product may change. What is treated in this treatise is how the industrial design should be, the design that is able to set a technical service system as a posture to educate and supply users the products, which a manufacturer makes with its sincerity and conscience setting its object for an industrialization postively upon the welfare for mankind, in other words the products that can be called "the standard goods".

To study, commonly, means to study scientifically. Of course, to study on design. And many discussions and declarations on the meaning of science. The most general of them tells us to cognize phenomena and describe them in orderly. However, to study on design, if it belongs to science, hasn't distincted phenomena of design, although there are many researches and declarations. If we want it is science to study on design, phenomena of design are "designed matters", provided by the definition of itself. Neverthless, most of studies on design aren't to cognize "designed matters", phenomena of design. Rather than cognition, they are studies "to design" or "how to design". "To design" is one of the behaviour of men. And, to cognize the behaviour of men is psychology or sociology. However, it is possible to study as they are methods, not to be objects of cognition. It means the arrangement of ideas and the making of plans in order to get something done, or system. To study, to discuss and to judge the method of men in behaviour, of design and of any others. It is general need for sciences to study the method in their fields to get semething done. This fact pointed out by the popular use of a word "engineering". For instances, "social engineering", "human engineering" and etc. Society and human, both of them aren't traditional objects of engineerings. The reason of popular uses of a word "engineering" is following. There is a foundamental thihking in engineerings. It has common with each engineerings, called "design (in engineering)". To set up some objects and to realize them, these are remarkable points of "design". These points have something common with "to design (a form)", too. Therefore, isn't it possible to study on design as an engineering, to find an order in our studies on design?

Usually, imaginative problem falls into difficulty for its abstractness. But, recently, philosophy and literature join issue with imaginative problem. Incidentally, it lets alone on the design field. In this study, we need restriction for imaginative consciousness correlates with designing. We constract a restriction, I fear that it get out of control. In this problem, we recognize that there is excellent works of J. P. Sartres "L'Imagination". Now we set foot on imagination with design creation. We cut our way through it. Sartre says that, imaginative consciousness has four special features, as follows. 1. Imagination is a kind of consciousness. 2. A phenomenon of "quasi-observation" 3. Imaginative consciousness arises from none-existence. 4. spontaneity Image has special features, as above, it arises from our real life. Therefore, we set in our situation for arising imaginative consciousness. This image is different from Art, that its purpose realizes.

The milk jug, the soy jug, kettle, the earthen teapot, the small teapot and so on, have the function of putting something in and pouring something into them. They have various forms according to their respective function, for example, pouring water into, boiling water or filtering tea. And also, they are made from various materials, i. e. the metal goods, the china and the sorcelain, accoring to their respective uses. Nowadays the plastic is discouered and the juicer and the teapot are electrified. Recently "Industrial Design" is attached importance, at the view point of rationality, economy and functions, they are made by means of mass production, they have the beauty of form due to their function. These vessels originate from earthenware in the Stone age. This paper treats the function and the form of them ascending to the Jomon period.
