    Among fundamental elements of Display, matters to be displayed and the places to show them in are two basic factors that form the field of Display. This paper makes a close research into the actual state of these essential factors, observed in the cases of major exhibitions of the world in recentyears, with the analysis of their respective functions as well as of their reciprocal relations.     In the descriptive semiotics for design field, one can introduce the following three applications: (1) the semiotic interpretation of the relarionship between User as Interpreter and his Environment as Object. (2) the semiotic design method of the technological relationship between Producer with intention and Environmental Elements as Objects. (3) the semiotic design triangl of Producer, Environment and User. The structure of application(3) was adopted in the age of hand work and personal communication, though it was very simple. But with the dawn of mass production and mass communication, Producer and User became separated. The divergency of views .between Producer and User has caused a great deal of trouble to the Environment. Therefoe it will be very important to seek the structure of application(3) over again on the basis of the semiotic consideration. Thus the task will be to investigate this field to meet the expected demands. In this thesis, I will try to deal with application (1), seeking the structure of application(3) in the spirit of Ch. S. Peirce's semiotics. Because these interactions might be considerd as a sign process (Semiosis). In this sign process, I would like to consider "Immediate Interpretant" "Percipient Interpretant" "Dynamic Interpretant" and "Normal Interpretant" as Context(1) which is a kind of accumulation in a person's brain of education experience and so forth, and I consider it is some kind of cord for interpreter. "The correlative system" "the isolated system" and "the single element" in the doctoral thesis: "Semiotic Consideration on Man-Made Environment" presented by Manfred Speidel* in March 1973, may be considerd as Context(2) for the interpreter. Context(2) is a kind of stimulation or information arising from Environmental Elements. In the environment, the interpretation of the sign process depends on both Context(1) and Context(2). It would be impossible to grasp such an interpretation without the mediation of the sign process as a scientific method in the complex modern society. I would like to typify these contexts in the sign process for the interpretation of the interactions between User and his Environment. In this thesis, I investigated Japanese traffic signs in correlative system which one can see in our modern environment. I tried to clear it's characters and effects. It is not.easy to use Japanese traffic signs for drivers and walkers, compared with American traffic signs and European traffic signs, because they are not systematic and are used a lot of elements to design. We will have to refine them according to semiotic consideration. The Semiotic Approach to Man-Made Environment should have the following purposes: (1) to unify multiple sensory impressions, (2) to allow the release of these impressions and (3) to control (1), and (2). We need all of these purpose's simultaneously in our lives. Therefore it is very important for us(Producer and User, Sender and Receiver, Communicator and Communicatee) to consider their toal balance in our Environment, to find out the degree of each Environmental Element and to design our Environment.     Development of art and design by light is one of the most significant features in the twentieth century. Growth and expansion of communication, traffic, high buildings, underground towns and exhibitions yielded many and various design by light. And, also in the field of fine art, it has become to appear as "light-art" in museums. I suppose these tendencies will be more prosperous in the future. Progress of science and tecnology will keep up them. Under such circumstances,I think we must teach about basic problems(theory and practice) of light-art and light-design. From such point of view, I studied about many features of light in art and design, and about how to use them for creating, in this paper. I believe such study by me is useful not only for education of art and design but for development of creation by light.
