In this paper, two methods are proposed for determining potential cosumer needs and creating images of new products for them. The first method: after statistical analysis on the usage of currently available products, a potential vector of new usage can be found in the statistically represented space. Images of new usages can be read from this vector. The causal relations between those images are schematised by DEMATEL analysis and are classified into three levels of causal hierarchy. The images of new products are put into tangible design through those analyes. The second method: each tangible functional attribute of the product is expressed as an abstract functional concept. Potential new ways of achieving the abstracted function can, in this way, be found. In order to aid innovative thinking, dissimilar but compatible pairs of functions can be found in the statistically represented space of the abstracted functions.

Recently, as a car stlye has reached maturity, the configuration (it means the layout and the proportion) of a car becomes to be defined early in the phase of the development of a car style by planners, designers, and engineers. Aims of this study is the analysis of factors effecting the cinfigration of a car. And, we construct a neual net work model -reasoning a cabin configuration from the configuration of a car body-, and a linear multiple regression model -reasoning a cabin configration from the interior configration items- and then, make simulations by means of these models. As a result, it becomes clear that the configrations of a car are brought partially by a linear thinking and by a non-linear thinking. And then, we get some guide line for designing the configuration of a car.

From the acoustic angle, suitability of materials for electric guiter were examined. Physical characteristics as Young's modulus, energy loss of vibration, density and distribution of spectrum were investigated through the flipped sounds with and without strings stretched above some kinds of square plates. On the other hand, the suitable sounds for the guiter were examined by sensory evaluation. Further, according to multiple regression analysis, the relation between the results of the evaluation and the physical characteristics were obtained. The relation were compared with two representative standard for selection instrument materials, and then the availability of the relation was proved.
