In the modern period, various kinds of bamboo baskets were made in the Kanto region. To investigate the relation between the design of bamboo baskets and the socioeconomic backgrounds, we analyzed the production and the usage of the baskets in an area of the region. Our conclusions are as follows : 1.As the industry of sericulture grew, the movement of skilled basket craftsmen occured, which caused technology transfer. Furthermore the transfer of sericulture technology also caused changes in the demand for baskets. 2.The vernacular design of baskets used for farming can be found in this area. Although the manufacturing methods and structure of the baskets changed according to the change in usage, the patterns of the baskets were inherited. The inheritance of the patterns was needed to maintain the social function of them. 3.There were two distinct systems of technology in the production of baskets; one was of professional craftsmen and the other was of those who made the baskets as minor subsistence.

This study is based on the survey of 160 museums in Korea as to educational activities of museums. Accordingly, the survey indicated three major tasks to be noted for present educational activities of museums as follows : 1) Task on Regional Relationship : It is required to reexamine attitude as well as the way of thinking to relationship between a region and museums in terms of operation of museum, given that relationship between museums and both local society and residents is integrated by museums' activities such as response to local needs, expansion of participation by local residents, support to education of local residents, and cooperation with various organizations and institutions. 2) Task on Action : Currently, the level of each activity is low and there are little direct association between museums and communities. The number of a museum is, however, growing, that develops direct involvement and takes an action of educational activities. It is, therefore, necessary to lead more positive change of point of view and to practice educational activities reflecting the sequence from the change. 3) Task on Correspondence System : Because each activity is deficient in suitable personnel and hardware of a museum, it is also required museums establish efficient correspondence system to cope with consistent utilization and participation by residents through improving quality of personnel and hardware.

Based on 428 survey responses from national, public museums in Japan, this study takes in situation of present educational activities, and captures 4 lessons to be addressed in educational activities. (1)Directivity of educational activities : In order to promote active utilization by local community, it is necessary that museums effectuate substantial educational activities. Also point of view needs to be changed on integration of relationship with local community and educational activities. (2)Substantiation of educational activities : Since present situation indicates that educational activities is not substantially carried away, it is crucial to have various educational activities responding community's necessity. (3)Substantiation of association activity : In order that a museum is to be the place for life-long education, it is essential to establish involvement of local community as well as wide association with various local organizations. (4)Arrangement of hardware and human resource : It is important to set up hardware and human resource for substantial activity development of a museum.

The design elements that should be considered in the development of a passenger car were complex and had not yet been clarified. The present study attempts to classify and clarify the properties of these complex design elements. Firstly, Three designers identified over 550 design elements in case of recreational vehicle. These elements had been subsequently classified into six categories using the KJ method and MDA similarity analysis. Next, the scattergram of the influence between the elements in each category had been made by the DEMATEL method of the Graph Theory analysis. The synthesize design element table was composed into the six categories and the four layers according to the analysis. The upper layer elements on the table, especially the key elements that influenced to many other elements should be checked in the passenger car design development.

In curve design, the relation between conventional shape-information and the whole characteristic of shape is not clear. Then it is important to grasp and control the whole characteristic of shape, and macroscopic shape-information is desired as a new design index. In past study, we found that curvature entropy represents the whole characteristic in a curve profile at the product level. However, there were some cases that curvature entropy defined without continuity of curve doesn't adapt cognitive process. Therefore, we proposed quadratic curvature entropy by modeling continuity of curve with Markov processes. As a result, quadratic curvature entropy represents the whole characteristic of shape in the simple curve profile and the automobile side view. Thus, it is indicated that quadratic curvature entropy is a useful design index for controlling the whole characteristic of shape and the shape-generation system with it is to be realized.

In the past study, against discomfort of accessible vehicles, the relationship between vibration and riding comfort was investigated, and the simulation model was constructed. The objective of this paper is to optimize the suspension mounted on a wheelchair, in consideration of diverse physical constitutions. Firstly, the optimum characteristics of the suspension for the each physical constitution taken age and sex into consideration was simulated by the simulation model. Secondly, using the robust design method for diverse conditions, a robust solution as a unique solution for all constitutions was obtained. The effect of mounting the suspension was expected to decrease the peak values of the vibration on upper torso by 40-50%. The relationship between the sitting posture and the vibration indicated that moving the hip point forward could lead discomfort.

The purpose of this paper is to make clear the traditional ideas in his domestic architecture, executed by an English architect, C.F.A.Voysey (1857-1941). Voysey emphasized the importance of the English traditional ideas and was referred the hall of the hall house which was the English traditional style. Voysey, who brought up the new idea using the living-room, endeavored to remove the drawing-room. However, the living-room, which generally has been used in the working classes, was not received the middle classes. Accordingly, he adopted the parlour which was multipurpose and ambiguous, and was used in the manor house. Voysey interpreted the traditional style in his own individual way. In that way, his own style laid the foundation of Modern domestic architecture.

As for Makuhari-cho, the east abuts Tokyo Bay, and the west faces inland. Historically fisheries and agriculture prospered together, and the town supplied food to Tokyo. Things changed dramatically in the 1960's. Chiba prefecture reclaimed land from Tokyo bay adjacent to Makuhari-cho, and constructed Makuhari New City. They built an international event center in 1989,and completed a series new houses in 1997. This research included a questionnaire for inhabitants of Makuhari-cho. The survey examined their utilization and their perceived valuation of Makuhari New City. The results showed several trends. 1)The inhabitants who lived in Makuhari-cho from the 1970s, and the inhabitants who came after show different characteristic. Specifically the older group shows a balanced holistic usage of the facilities, but the later group is oriented forwards specific goals (i.e. education, business etc.). 2)The earlier inhabitants are divided into two sets; one set takes advantage of the amenities provided by Makuhari New City, and the other set which largely does not.

There are various views regarding the aspects of traditional patterns. In this research, we tried to express cognitive structures of visually equivocal patterns based on an evaluation using formative terms. We interpreted the result extracted from the evaluation by factor analysis, and created some images from the interpretations. We classified all images into 5 different types, called "Layer" concerning following characteristics. (1)Tone Layer (brightness and darkness or contrast) (2)Texture Layer (entire density or roughness) (3)Composition Layer (structure like array) (4)Movement Layer (flow or motion) (5)Detail Layer (partial characteristics) It was found that Texture Layer and Composition Layer were higher positioned in the rank of layers, and those Layers showed the overall characteristics of patterns. Therefore, we clarified a tendency that an observer recognizes the overall characteristics in the first place.

The action of rotary control was studied, using columnar objects set on the front and side faces of an experimental piece of apparatus. The study was conducted using 32 people. Forty five wooden columnar objects were prepared with different diameters. The objects, which were randomly chosen, were set in a holder on a table and were turned clockwise with the right hand. The height of the rotation axis, was the height of each points, of acromiale height. The experiment was recorded by a video camera from the 'palm' side of the hand and the relationship between the object and point of contact of the fingers were obtained from the video recording. As a result, we can understand the boundries on the number of fingers, which were shown relatively and used at the time of starting the rotary control. The touching points of the fingers were approximated and the changes clarified by the quadratic curves. In addition, in comparison to the case of a top face setting, these results have shown a partial property finger skill for rotation control and we can widely apply it as data for 'Product Design'.
