The general trend in modern society is towards a diversification of life-styles and viewpoints deeming it necessary for interior design to allow for the expression of individual personality, as well as providing a means for varying interior space. This diversification will result in a growing interest in design and form of housing that incorporates this desire for a changeable interior space. In the future, interior object design will become more valuable when designs are created in response to limitations set by a complex environment, rather than as a solution for simple functional requirements.

We proposed a quantitative analysis method of the characteristics of a curve, for finding what an aesthetic curve is. A number of curves drawn by designers were analyzed by this method. As a result, we found that the designer controlled the curvature change with a seif-affine property, when he produced a curve in design work. In other words, the designer sees a curve with a self-affine property as an aesthetic curve. On the basis of this fact, we developed five types of curves which have the self-affine property. Furthermore, we made 'drawing curves' from these curves as 'visual language'. We clarified that it was available to apply an ellipse to production of 'drawing curves'.

The purpose of the present study was to reconsider the sleeping environment for people suffering sleep-disordered breathing. We compared general hospital examination rooms with those specifically for sleep tests, and investigated how the sleeping environment affects patients as they fall asleep. Five hundred twenty-six patients at 2 institutions with suspected sleep-disordered breathing were classified by severity on the apnea-hypopnea index, and compared in terms of the time required to fall asleep (sleep latency). It was found that the sleep latency at a special sleep institution, which had taken care in setting up a positive sleeping environment, was shorter in all groups that was in a general hospital examination room. Polysomnography is essential in diagnosing sleep-disordered breathing, and is an important indicator in setting treatment policy. Together with proposals for the creation of an examination room environment suited to this test, examination of this problem may also lead to proposals for more comfortable bedrooms.

This study is to investigate the characteristics of kitchen remodeling for wheelchair users in Korea and to present ideas for kitchen design through analyzing the effects of remodeling and evaluating the application degree of universal design principle. For case studies, we visited 20 remodeled kitchens in Korea, interviewing and observing wheelchair users, measuring and taking pictures of remodeled kitchens. The following are major findings resulting from this study: (1) Remodeled kitchens in Korea are classified into 3 types. Type 1 is the kitchen where knee space is provided below sink. Type 2 is the one where the kitchen counter is much lowered for a wheelchair user to do kitchen work sitting on the kitchen floor. Type 3 is the kitchen where the counter is slightly lowered without a knee space in consideration of appearance and the reduction of storage space etc. (2) Evaluation by universal design criteria showed Type A was higher than Type B and Type C in principle one (supportive design), two (adaptable design), and three (accessible design). (3) To carry hot food, a table being attached to a wheelchair can be considered.

In order to solve the waste problem, it has to offer long-life products. However, it is not clarify whether long-life products are received in consumer. Therefore, this study examines the marketability of long life products by using Evaluation Grid Method, AHP and conjoint analysis to make research plan, and select furniture, motorcycle, automobile, and refrigerator as study subject. According to the result of analysis, it is understood that although consumer acceptance of long life products is not very high, it is promising to sale to segments that prefer these. And it is also clarified what is need to improve.

In this paper we argue the design strategy in Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (Honda) through the case studies of product development of CIVIC, 2nd PRELUDE and ODYSSEY. In conclusion, the development process of CIVIC yielded the organizational capabilities to Honda: Honda has the mechanism to make a chance for employee to meet another employee, to reduce the uncertainty, to investigate the knowledge and skill of employee. The design strategy of the process of product development of 2nd PRELUDE in Honda implies three design elements: eteenality (immortality) of design, fashionableness (contemporaneity), and utility (serviceableness). The design strategy of the process of product development of ODYSSEY in Honda was based on "the SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, and Treats) Analysis" in the business strategy theory. Design management is carried out to make up and direct the organization.

This paper studies how visual impressions of newspaper front pages differ between Japanese and foreign newspapers, and how such impressions differ between Japanese and foreign readers. First, layout elements from the front pages of a selection of Japanese, Taiwanese, Korean, American, and British newspapers, together with the author's proposed layout design, were classified into five groups. Next, an investigation of the visual impressions of ten front page samples was conducted using data collected from 233 subjects in a questionnaire based on semantic differential scales. The subjects comprised a cross-section of native readers of Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. Subsequently, a factor analysis of this data identified three factors; "impact". "reliability" and "readability". Additionally, two samples, 'The Guardian' newspaper, and the authors' proposal received particularly good overall evaluation. In contrast, the four Japanese newspapers received no outstanding evaluation, (either positive or negative). However, Japanese readers had a notable tendency to evaluate color front pages lower than foreign readers. Finally, it was found that a good visual impression can be best achieved by the use of a large main color picture, rectangularly blocked articles partitioned by bold ruled lines, and an appropriate quantity of blank space.
