This comparative research aims at defining what is different between Japanese's mobile phones and European's ones concerning user-interface design. We examined 84 Japanese models on 6 catalogues and 41 European models on 2 catalogues. Also, we used 15 samples to understand the how-to-control. Results are follow. Concerning screens, the resolution of Japanese's phones is higher than European's ones, and Japanese screens are more colorful. Concerning GUI, although European phones apply one item selected style GUI and matrix GUI Japanese's ones apply matrix GUI and File-type GUI Concerning keypads, Japanese's ones have more keys and indicators than European's ones. Many icons are printed on the Japanese keypad, whereas many signs are printed on the European's ones. Concerning menu structures, on Japanese phone users can directly access to many functions without going through the entire menu structure. And we consider what factors influence on the user interfaces. We concluded that cultural factor is one of them.

"Programmed Art" gave an influence to contemporary art in Italy as an experimental movement in technology art. However, the movement has not been known well not only in Japan, but also in other countries. Here, texts and works by the artists are reinvestigated, and a real concept of the movement is discussed. Then some controversial problems in the precedent studies are solved. This paper is expected to be a first material, in which one can make a survey of the "Programmed Art". The significance of the movement from a modern viewpoint is also mentioned.

This paper suggested method to generate figure which consisted of line segments with a bit arrangement automatically to help drafting of a design of hand-kerchieves. Functions and combination of those functions are defined by a bit arrangement each. Various kinds of functions are generated by various combinations of these bit arrangements. Shape of the figure which consisted of line segments is decided by distribution of angles that consisted of adjacent line segments. When a function to express distribution of angles is expressed by a bit arrangement, various kinds of figures are generated by various combinations of a bit arrangement. Each distribution of angles between line segments is respectively calculated regarding the targeted figure and the generated figure. The bit arrangement that a similar degree between them seems to become greatest is decided by carrying out hereditary algorithm.

Although today's drivers have a different sense of valuing their cars, the Information design of car navigation systems (car-navis) has tended to be uniform. This research is aimed at clarifying the relation between drivers' impres-sions and elements that constitute car-navi Information design to optimize both speech and information. First, we did a survey on the sense of valuing cars and ITS, analyzed the results with PCA, and extracted seven elements. Next, eight samples were created through design experiments using the seven elements, and an evaluation experiment was conducted using the eight evaluation terms. As a result of analysis with a t-test, it became clear that the Information design element, which influences evaluation terms, is different depending on the driver's sense of value. Furthermore, we directed our attention to the icon as an important element. As a result of conducting an evaluation experiment on the icon, which changed the molding and color, we were able to obtain a valuable index in designing the icon.

As for the research of the compressed wood until now, Compressed Japanese Cedar is compared with the rest of wood about a dynamic character and a sensory character of compressed Japanese Cedar for necessary when it is applied furniture, fittings and interior parts. In both characters of Compressed Japanese Cedar has the same characters of hard wood. In this paper, the method which it was made to apply to furniture, fittings, interior parts were examined. In that result, it is not only can be used as solid materials, it can also used in making a composite wood were cofirmed. So, school and home furniture, interior door, flooring, curved plywood furniture, xylophone were manufactured as an experiment. In the result, Compressed Japanese Cedar and a wood composite which were made by its sliced veneer can be handled as well as the usual wooden goods and the completion is the same as the usual them, too. From the above, Compressed Japanese Cedar can be expected as a high quality and new wooden material.

One of the obstacles for solving an environmental problem is in the low consciousness which is going to master an artifact for a long time. In other words, it is necessary to change people's consciousness first that using an artifact long leads to solving an environmental problem. In this paper, the attention was paid to the phenomenon of the attachment which people hold to an artifact. A questionnare had been carried out and the relation between various Kansei elements of an artifact, and the phenomenon of the attachment was studied by using the Factor and Cluster analyses. Subsequently, SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) was applied to construct the causal model which solved the generating process of attachment, 4 types of intention attitudes were obtained. Finally, 6 items (highly plastsic processing, texture expression, heartful function, fresh impression, satisfaction of attachment elements, bland value) of an artifact design guideline for causing attachment were led based on the investigation results.

This article is one of the series of the study on the establishment process of the in-house design organization of electrical appliance manufactures in Japan. The investigation was conducted from the viewpoint of Management of Design (MOD), and the study results on Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation were reported on the previous papers respectively. On this study, Toshiba Corporation, another Japanese leading company of the field and the first producer and marketer of electric fans in Japan, was investigated by almost same manner. The study shows that the design organization in Toshiba was founded and promoted by quite different process from the above mentioned companies. Toshiba is known as the oldest domestic appliance manufacturer in Japan, and his proud tradition had been handed down by successive company executives. At the same time, the several remarkable challenges for design development such as the collaboration design projects with the members of the Industrial Arts Institute, a government organization, and the employment of foreign industrial designer as a guest designer contributed to the strengthening of Toshiba design structures.
