    Under the current circumstances that consumer-electronics manufacture approach to environmental issues increasingly, the role of designer is very important. Designers are involved in many processes from production to disposal. This work set out to investigate how in-house designers participate in ecological product developments today. We conducted a questionnaire survey to intra-firm designing departments. The result shows the design department is aware that design development is the most important point to approach as before. Because commercialization of product is difficult without a synergistic effect on cost reduce, sales appeal or novelty of a design. And we think the design departments should consult on following eco-design areas from here on. (1) Development of materials and processing methods for exterior (2) Long life design (3) Proposal of eco functions or mechanisms and new services (4) The design that arouse eco in users or work on users' ecological operation when used.

    Heterogeneity among hedonic tones (pleasantness, beauty, and liking), interestingness and enjoyment of paintings were explored. Two indices of understandability were used: the rated understandability on a bipolar scale and the sharpness of reproduction. University art students (n=21) rated 30 pictures on 9 scales, including the above-mentioned 6 scales. Picture stimuli that were used were original reproductions of three realism and three abstract paintings, and their altered versions by mosaic processing to systematically decrease sharpness (four levels per each reproduction). Results indicated that hedonic tones were strongly affected by both indices. However, interestingness was negatively related to the rated understandability. No significant relation was observed between enjoyment and understandability. These findings are suggestive of the heterogeneity between hedonic tone and other aesthetic evaluations.

    A Web system and contents were designed for a public outreach. The system monitored tracks of PC-mouse of a reader. Interest points of the reader were analyzed automatically from the track of mouse. Then, other scientific topics were immediately introduced based on the analyzed interests, by indicating related images. Contents in the Web site include many flash movies and brief explanations for inexpert people. 81 inexpert people replied to questionnaires before and after the browsing. An effect of the public outreach was evaluated from the answers. The most important aim of the public outreach is that the readers get their own opinions. As the results, the effect of the public outreach was found and respondents got their own opinions after browsing the web-site.

    The objective of this research is to explore relationships among the three main aesthetic components in design of traditional daily products (TDPs): form, color and decoration. Those relationships are compared between two countries, Japan and Vietnam, in order to reveal the specification of each country. By using Dual Scaling and Cluster Analysis methods, the correlations between three pairs (Form-Color, Color-Decoration, Decoration-Form) are in turn investigated and extracted. Finally, the summary of all result shows that, the relationship among color, form, decoration in Japanese TDPs is tighter and balance than in Vietnamese ones. This indicates that, in Japanese TDPs form has strong effects to color and decoration in a product, while it is likely a separate component in design of Vietnamese TDPs. Besides, there is also a similarity between the two countries: form and decoration's complexity are usually in a visual balance and harmony, while colorfulness follows up with decoration's complexity.

    In this study, the method for generating motions that give rise a sense of affinity by the robot on virtual-reality space is proposed based on the viewpoint of the Multispace Design Model that can describe the relationship between an object and circumstances. The method employs interactive genetic algorithm that can reflect the individual differences in evaluating affinity and generates motions by inputting the evaluations of both affinity and eye contact. As a result of the motion generation, affinity evaluation of the motion generated by the proposal method became high compared with that by the method inputting only affinity. Therefore i t was shown that the consideration of the eye contact caused by the relationship between the direction of eyes of a robot and that of a human is important. Moreover, since the difference was found in the degree of the eye contact in generated motion, there are individual differences in the relationship between eye contact and affinity. It was also shown that the consideration of an individual's liking for eye contact is necessary.

    This paper examines the trade and use of rattan in China and Japan until, and during, the 17^<th> Century. The objective is to analyse how rattan was viewed, understood and used in design prior to its introduction into Europeans markets as a material suited for chair seat manufacture. It is intended that this investigation will provide a better understanding of initial European perceptions of rattan when this material was encountered in the early stages of the 17^<th> Century, and why it was accepted with such vigour into the English chair trade from the 1660s. The analysis of rattan use in China and Japan prior to the 17^<th> Century indicates that this material had attained a widespread reputation for its unique natural properties, namely that of strength and flexibility, that translated into a multi-purpose usage. Its continued employment in two areas, weaving and binding, can be seen as pre-empting its introduction into chair seat manufacture in China from around the Song Dynasty onwards.

    The electronic paper signage is thought to be useful for advertisements and emergency signs in the public space because it is energy-saving and it can continue to display contents even after the power supply is interrupted. The present study evaluated and optimized the legibility of the texts on a large-sized electronic paper, by combining laboratory experiments and an on-site survey at a subway station. In the laboratory experiment, we evaluated the optimal line and character spacing by the method of paired comparison. We also evaluated the reading speed. In the on-site survey, we evaluated the readability of the text with actual subway users. In addition, we asked the subway users about the satisfaction of the contents. The results suggested that in an indoor public space with the 500lx light, a large-sized electronic paper display will be comfortably read with the size of 0.56+ deg in visual angle, 50% line spacing, 25% character spacing, and the reading speed of 8 characters per second.

    Packages of Japanese canned coffee beverages contain design elements such as brand names and logos to catch consumers' attention. In order to discuss the role of each design element, we examined the consumers' eye movement and attention to the design elements. In the eye-movement experiment, we presented a picture of a can and recorded the subject's eye movement. In the attention experiment, we measured the subject's attention by using "change blindness" paradigm. In the experiment, we presented pictures of cans in change blindness paradigm and recorded how long it took for the subjects to detect the changes. The results of the eye-movement experiment showed the subjects gazed larger elements longer. However, in the attention experiment, symbols caught the subjects' attention relatively efficiently despite their small sizes. Based on those results, we discussed the role of each design element.

    This study is for an approach for design humanoid robots to perform attractive. Humanoid robots are required to perform attractive for friendly with human. But it is necessary to have humanoid robots perform under the limited mechanism, because they do not have complicated body-mechanism on arthritis as human have. Therefore, in this study, we tried to simplified motions of human by emphasizing remarkable motions and omitting trivial to have humanoid robot perform them under simple mechanism. This method is called "KATA", have seen in Japanese folk entertainment. We applied this method to design motions of humanoid robots. We focus on "model" in fashion as a motif, because "model" is one of standards of the modern beauty. We observed a model, and found some attractive rules on motions. Second, we designed and made a moving mannequin robot simple and slim under attractive rules.

    This study deals with disaster information specifically intended for foreign residents in Japan, and examines the ways of providing such information and its related problems. First, we did a research on how all the prefectural governments and major cities in Japan are providing disaster information to foreign residents. Next, we tried to categorize and analyize the contents of the brochures that are currently available to them. The research revealed that most of area offer accident information with printed materials and website. And most of this service provides translation as English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese. We conducted an analysis of printed materials and website which are mostly used and involved with classification of types about supply media. Above all, the research was undertaken classification of contents and categorization of design on the accident information. Upon investigation countermeasure of return home was not provided by local government. Refuge, by comparison, has been provided with information on website. In the course of design classification, publications provide letter・illustration and multilingual service but website offer only one first language with text.

    The society, which approached the 21^<st> century, has entered the service era. And new challenges are demanded for product design. In particular, the value creation of service product is considered as one of the most important ways to solve design problems. This paper studied the value co-creation in service design from the perspective of design paradigm change. Concretely, the process of product development was classified into four periods, and the concept of service product, which is defined as "JinPin", was presented. Furthermore, the value of service product was classified into three types as economic value, use value, and Kansei value, and then the relations among these three types of value were clarified. Finally, considering the necessity of the time axis design, the means was discussed to keep and/or improve value in service product from the perspective of product lifecycle.

    Through literature reviews and in-depth interviews to the key persons, this study investigated the background, cause, activities and achievement of inviting the Russel Wright Associates to promote handcraft export to America by the Taiwan Handcraft Promotion Center during 1955-1960, under the support of the American Aid Program. Through this study we explored the influence on the development of industrial design in the early stage of Taiwan caused by these promotion activities and have clarified the critical role they have played in assisting the transition of development from handcraft design into industrial design in Taiwan. This study revealed that, for enhancing the exporting potential of Taiwanese handcraft products, the Russel Wright Associates has successfully conducted a series of training programs in 1950s to enhance the skill for designing and manufacturing bamboo and rattan furniture, fine bamboo handcrafts, straw-woven mats and hats, souvenir products, wood carving handcrafts, and pottery handcrafts. The programs included training technicians, improving manufacturing technology and introducing new concept of managing and selling products as well. By these programs, it is also the first time the modern concept and methods of American industrial design have been introduced to Taiwan in the early stage and have deeply influenced the development of industrial design in Taiwan afterward. Based on this point, we may say Russel Wright is the first tutor to enlighten the development of industrial design in Taiwan.

    Traditional Shirushi-mark in Japan such as house signs and names was once widely used and was one of the extremely important cultural elements and regional resources for merchants and those living in mountain and fishing villages. However, it has been disappearing rapidly today. The exceptions are those used by the established merchant shops and old families. It is an urgent problem to reconfirm and to recognize the modern social meanings of traditional Shirushi. The paper presents the outcome of the research conducted for six old companies in Settaya District, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. The district is known as "The Village of Brewing" and many of these marks were identified. The paper intends to make people aware of the meaning of existence and the use of Shirushi for the creation of a regional identity and of these six companies. It also put forward a number of proposals to utilize these Shirushi to meet the needs of designing a living for the region.
