The study evaluated the accuracy ratio, identification time and difficulty level of simultaneous recognition in multiple graphic warning symbols. Twelve graphic warning symbols originally displayed on escalators were used as stimulants in the experiment to compare the variables between the participants who were divided into two groups, based on their "high" and "low" degree of familiarity. The experiment shows: Familiarity provides an impact on accuracy ratio and difficulty level. The higher degree is better than the lower. In terms of difficulty level, perception is easier for higher degree of familiarity. However, no significant differences are caused with identification time. According to accuracy ratio, the number of multiple graphic symbols is limited to no more than four. Meanwhile, hazard degree is taken into account before selecting important warnings which can thus be actually put into effect. Accidents may consequently be avoided.

One of the primary concerns of architectural designers is how to attract the attention of citizens emotionally through shop façade. The Kansei Engineering can be adopted to explore how to quantitatively measure image evaluation. Thus, this approach was used to investigate the relationship between design features and a Kansei image. A semantic differential scale (SD) questionnaire was created to survey impressions of single-building restaurants for 546 testees. First, Factor analysis of Kansei words identified three distinct factors labeled Morphology-Style, Valuable-Affection, and Fashionable-Aesthetics. A semantic-spatial distribution of the three categories shows an extreme variance. Then, the broken-line graphs indicate that the leaning scale for average of the contemporary type displayed significant differences. Quantitative Theory Type I analysis explains how the items and categories of characteristics affect image and preferences. After that, Cluster analysis determined that all fifteen examples were divided into the two groups according to aesthetics principle.

This paper is the continuity of previous research on trend catch-up and spread structure for kawaii which taken fashion attire as the sample. The research aims to determine the kawaii trend transition in terms of its catch-up and spread including its adaptation and innovation to other places that concern on the background of region during the process of transition. By this study, the way of the trend transition occurs and its target result to other region can be forecasted, to be used as one of the design strategy during design development process. To obtain the study objective, 2 regions taken as the example of the trend transition which are Japan and Malaysia. Survey on kawaii image intimacy is done in each sample groups which are the stationery and car samples. For stationery survey, 30 samples and 10 respondents were selected. For car survey, 22 samples and 10 male respondents were chosen. Data collected is analyzed by MDS to determine the stationeries and cars initimacy position on kawaii image. Then, the MDS maps are grouped based on cluster analysis. A comparative study is done on each respondent's trend groups. The tatami is one of the major tools in the interior construction of building structures in Japan; it is used as the unit of measurement for determining the size of the interior space. In addition, the tatami symbolizes the lifestyle and unique features of the Yamato people. Taiwan's knowledge of tatami came about during the Japanese Occupation when the Japanese brought it with them to the country; it has since slowly been integrated into the Taiwanese way of life. The study is using the building of historical information as foundation to conduct survey and research into Taiwan's tatami industry and culture. It also uses the field research technique of folklore and the cross-verification of related literature as the main research method. The purpose for this study is to build historical data on the development of tatami industry, as well as to understand how foreign culture develops in Taiwan, providing reference for future design localization.

This study aimed to determine the need of the elderly of digital social media and apply that in the analysis of the matrix table as a reference for the design criteria. We developed a prototype of our design concept, and then improved it by involving elderly participants in a two-phase discussion. The proposed system made it easy for them to control any desired function by simply selecting a number. In addition, the touchpad and the built-in microphone of the remote control made it easy for them either writing or talking. Our prototype includes an introduction to the socializing platform, followed by a direct video conversation and an information platform. The purpose of which was to integrate the social functions of the media the elderly are already familiar with. This paper discusses the proposed prototype concept and how it can provide suggestions as well as a reference in the design and application of tools to assist the elderly with participating in social media.

This study investigated human impression of favorability and gender sensitivity response on color fabrics for comfort in health care interior facility. Three groups of color fabric; Pink (10), Saxe Blue (10) and White (10), total of 30 different stimuli were selected. 12 subjects evaluated the stimuli with 29 adjective-pair words that meet comfortability of psychological term of healing. The obtained data was analyzed in few steps; favorability rating, impression and gender sensitivity response by using factor analysis and semantic differential method. The findings support previous medical study that warm color physiologically induces more arousal, a cool color stimulates cooling and calming effect, and a plain of White appear to give only a little effect on relaxation. Women were more sensitive in perceiving bright-dark and warm-cool of a color than Men. This finding may contribute to gain applicable knowledge in interior design application in regard of applying therapeutic environments.

Creativity of the design is majorly decided in the concept generation stage which needs more information and stimuli. This paper examined the relation between concept generation and related search term stimuli. We hypothesized that stimuli which are offered by Google's search terms would encourage the creative cognitive processes. In the process of concept generation, stimuli group and non-stimuli group would be asked to develop their concepts with two problems. The concepts would be analyzed through creativity and the creative cognitive processes. The stimuli sets were generated by Google's search terms which were searched for 5 levels. Results showed that the creativity of the concepts was significantly correlated with creative cognitive processes, in word stimuli situation. With word stimuli, designers used creative cognitive processes more than the designers without word stimuli. Designers used generation processes more than exploration processes in the word stimuli condition. In particular, generation processes were more related to creativity than other processes aided with word stimuli.

A model of innovating for "She" (社, meaning a Being-Place relationship in a settlement) and "Qun" (群, meaning an interpersonal circle in a tribe) retrieves "community" (社區) from the CCD (community comprehensive development) in Taiwan. The case of Tu-Guo activates this model by changing private fields and circles into "quasi-settlements" and "quasi-tribes" as the public domain of community, recreating the "sensus communis" on an "intimate relationship" basis. This paper explores 3 findings: 1) an interactive community model from indigenous traditions; 2) a civic design of problem-solving practices with community governance; and 3) an indicator of the public nature of health identification with CCD.

Practice-led research has recently been advocated in art and design academia internationally. This study aims to promote graduate students' capacity to conduct design practice-led research. We aimed to understand the learning situations and problems in conducting design practice-led research of 6 graduate students using the FTCF model, to find solutions for enhancing the students' learning, and to examine the improvement and effectiveness of the instruction. Using action research, the first cycle indicated 2 problematic aspects: the linguistic components and research methods, and the use of the FTCF model. The solutions were focused on the learning difficulties in the 2 categories. The second cycle showed that the students' competency regarding the 2 aspects clearly improved. The effectiveness of the methods is analyzed and discussed. Finally, we provide suggestions regarding directions for further research.

This study explores social distance management as a strategic way to alleviate people's dissatisfaction with a vacuum cleaning robot, particularly when the robot requires an unpleasant favor. We executed a 2 (intergroup relations: out-group vs. in-group) x 3 (body zones: close vs. 40cm vs. 100cm) mixed-participants experiment (N=36). Participants watched three videos of either out-group robots or in-group robots, asking an unpleasant favor at different body zones. People evaluated the out-group robots more positively regarding impressions, partnerships and service as the distance of asking for a favor became shorter, while they preferred in-group robots as the distance became greater. However, an in-group robot asking for a favor from the middle distance, 40cm, was the least preferred. Implications for the design of human-robot interactions are discussed.

"Less is more" advocated by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is one of core ideas of modernism. Such idea coincides with a concept that "to have few is to attain; to have plenty is to be confused", which is recorded in Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. This study applies subtraction thinking into design education, as well as extensively investigates mainstream concept of subtraction thoughts and strategies of companies and designers. This study emphasizes that relationship between subtraction thinking and addition thought is not opposite but cooperative. As a continuation of "Four Arithmetic Operations of Design Creativity Thinking", this study classifies subtraction thinking into Concept Operation and Technique Operation. Concept Operation is based on mathematical theories-deduction or deletion; Technique Operation is divided into Deletion Subtraction, Hollowing Subtraction, Covering Subtraction, Simplification Subtraction and Blankness Subtraction. Through theory discussion and analysis of graphic works, this study investigates subtraction thinking conceptions and design education practices, in hope of providing a reference for design education and practice.
