Focusing on the "Krakow Workshops" (1913-1926) before 1918, this study attempts to place the Workshops' activity within the frame of the design history, by exploring how it put into practice the ideas of European modern design adopted from the artistic trend in Vienna.
The Krakowian applied arts movement around 1900 incorporated both western modern styles and national expressions. In the 1910s, the artists' ambitions were realized by the establishment of the Krakow Workshops following the "Exhibition of Architecture and Interiors in Garden Surroundings" in 1912. The Workshops aimed for improvement of crafts rather than national expression, and promoted solid production in cooperation with the City Museum. Despite its similarities to the "Vienna Workshops" (1903-1932), both its statement and its design prove that the Workshops was a group that autonomously practiced the ideas of European modern design.

This study modeled an information support environment through sound visualization using a see-through information presentation device and evaluated the related mental workload. Brain activation measured by cerebral blood flow was used as a physiological index. Increased cerebral blood flow was observed in response to information presentation during sound discrimination and localization tasks. Moreover, response times in both tasks were within the range of human perception-reaction time required for danger avoidance. During the rear-visibility task, responses were slower than the safety standards. In regard to the sound discrimination task, subjects were categorized according to whether they reacted faster to the vocal auditory information or to the pictorial visual information. A correlation was also observed between increased cerebral blood flow and decreased response time. Thus, information presentation that promotes brain activation associated with attentional shifting is important for enabling a shift to safety responses or actions.

The cloth deformation in fashion drawing was examined quantitatively. The drawings and product photographs of the 71 dresses were utilized. Five of cloth dimensions of design drawing (D) and of product (D') were extracted by applying a skeleton- and a cloth-models onto the samples. The distributions of D and D' of the five dimensions implied that there is specific cloth deformation in the samples. Then, regression equations expressing D' by D were derived as follows: D' = 0.81D + 16.73 (r = 0.89) for the skirt length, D' = 0.36D + 51.69 (r = 0.60) for the dress waist width, D' = 0.31D + 70.88 (r = 0.63) for the dress hip width, D' = 0.44D + 61.24 (r = 0.80) for the skirt width, and D' = 0.42D + 68.52 (r = 0.74) for the bottom width. The relationships between the cloth dimensions and with the deformation of the body in the drawing were also analyzed.

By the spread of tablet in recent years, we can see a large variety of icons. However, the comprehensibility and the attraction of icons are different by the cognitive process and preference of the user. Therefore, we aimed to analyse the attraction and the comprehensibility of icons using the rough set in this study. Specifically, at first we investigated the attraction and comprehensibility of icons and extracted form elements (attribute values) to constitute icons. Next, we calculated decision rules of each subject using a rough set to clarify how the attribute values that we extracted influences the attraction and the comprehensibility. In addition, we classified subjects using cluster analysis by using co-occurrence rate between subjects with decision rules. Next, we extracted characteristic attribute values that subjects in each cluster felt attracted and comprehended. Finally we produced sample icons by using the characteristic attribute values and verified availability of these attribute values.

This article examines a semantic content of the term isho which appeared in articles promoting design for arts and crafts industry during the 20's of the Meiji era (1887 -1896) in Japan. It was a decade when pundits began recognizing the difference between fine art and arts and crafts products. While artisans in arts and crafts had high levels of crafting skills, they hardly thought of applying good designs to their products. Influential pundits, therefore, encouraged artisans to consider functions of design. Seigai Omura wrote an issue titled "Isho-ron" that argued the meaning of isho and its role. Kenjiro Maeda set up a study group named "Nippon Isho-kai" to train design skills in a competitive environment. In this context, the word isho was used to signify thinking faculties as to how to embody subjects of aesthetic creation into concrete objects. It was often contrasted with skills for making handicrafts.

The presented method is as follows: Six of cloth dimensions are extracted from a drawing by applying a skeleton-and a cloth-model; regression equations are applied to the dimensions to predict the actual dimensions; the form of the cloth model on a standard body is reconstructed based on the predicted dimensions; then the lines in the drawing are projected onto the standard body. To evaluate the new concept, drawings of 70 dresses were converted into an image with the body-proportion regulated, and an image where the body and the cloth silhouettes are regulated using the actual dimensions extracted from the product photography. Six experts in fashion compared the two types of images with product-photography-based images, and judged that the body-regulated images are more realistic for 3 samples; there are not much difference between the two images for 19 samples; the images with the body and the cloth regulated by our approach are superior for 48 samples.
