    The aim of this research was to investigate the level of argument skills among elementary school students in Japan. This study focused on McNeill & Krajcik (2011)'s first variation of argument, which includes claim, evidence (data) and reasoning (scientific principle) as the essential components, and examined the grade difference and gender difference in argument skills. Participants were 139 Grade 5 students and 139 Grade 6 students. Students were presented two questions with observational and experimental data on scientific topics, and asked to write arguments to answer the questions. Students' written arguments were scored out of two according to the presence and scientific accuracy of each component. Most of the students wrote at least one claim for each question, while about half of the students did not write any evidence or reasoning. Moreover, this study found a difference in students' performance between the two questions. Our results also showed that even in the final grade of elementary school, many or most students have not acquired the skill of stating an argument that connects data with claims using scientific principles. Instructions to improve students' argument skills should be designed.

    It is necessary to correct the iodine content with the standard solution of vitamin C before the oxidation-reduction titration using gargle iodine is performed. Quantitative analyses using the gargle solution made clear that the vitamin C content in commercial beverages are not inconsistent with the values on the label of the bottle, because the vitamin C is gradually decomposed by oxygen gas in the air. Although the new titration method is very easy and simple, it will add a quantitative consideration to the chemical experiments by high-school students. Although the method is also applicable for measuring the vitamin C content of madarin oranges on the market, it is noteworthy that the observed values are widely spread.

    A new reversible thermochromic system applicable to teaching materials is introduced. In the reaction system consisting of cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate and solid alcohol, a pink coloration of the mixture due to CoCl_2・6H_2O at room temperature is changed to a blue one, which seems to be due to anhydrous CoCl_2, at the same time as solid alcohol melts upon heating. Thus, the temperature at which the color change takes place can be controlled arbitrarily to a certain extent by selecting solid alcohol appropriately. Using this reaction, teachers and pupils can readily prepare a 'thermo-sheet' by mixing two commercial reagents and laminating the powder obtained. The explanation that alcohol molecules dehydrate the dispersed CoCl_2-6H_2O particles into melt alcohol above the melting point may be conceivable for the mechanism of thermochromism.

    The purpose of this study is to clarify differences in perception regarding the idea of life and differences in the relationship between subordinate concepts between second-year students of a second lower secondary school and first-grade students of an upper secondary school. Comparisons of the score mean value for the idea of life from each school year showed that the score mean value for biological concepts was significantly higher for students in the first-grade of upper secondary school. Furthermore, they tended to regard living things as machines, so that the average score of "vitalism" was significantly high. As for the correlation between subordinate concepts, the number of subordinate concepts correlating with "conjecture", "personification", "value" and "life" was higher for the second-year students of the lower secondary school. Meanwhile, the number of subordinate concepts related to "objective knowledge" and "vitalism" was higher for those in the first-grade of upper secondary school. From the above, it is considered necessary to investigate students in the first-grade of upper secondary school by asking them what the difference between living things and a machine is. This is necessary in order to understand their "mechanism" in more detail, and to provide them with guidance to strengthen the relationship between "recognition" and "emotion".

    In China, the rapid economic progress has caused large disparities between rich and poor areas in many aspects. Focusing on the gap in health education at the compulsory education stage, we have surveyed the means to eliminate such educational differentials. Based on data which are published by the Chinese Government and interviews with Chinese children, students and teachers in Japan, we analyzed the current state of the health education. From these analyses it became clear that the essential problem was a lack of appropriate textbooks in this field. To solve this problem, we developed 4 kinds of teaching materials: Human Body, Infectious Diseases, Foods and Nutrition, and Water. With the cooperation of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), we then visited the Association of Science and Education in Changchun, Jilin Province, and a number of schools, in order to assess the effectiveness of our educational materials. The results of a questionnaire to junior high school students, and interviews with teachers, show that health education classes were not provided sufficiently. In addition, our educational materials apparently helped to improve students' understanding.

    Most high school and university students are interested in fictitious organisms that have featured in novels, movies, on television, and other media. In several countries, teaching trials using various fictitious organisms have been introduced in biology educational courses. For example, self-study of fictitious organisms during undergraduate courses, and an "origami bird" teaching material for evolution education have been reported up to date. "Caminalcules", fictitious organisms for teaching taxonomy and evolution, and BioLogica^<TM> simulation software for learning genetics have also been thought to be effective educational materials. After discussing the effects of these trials using fictitious organisms for Japanese biology education, we assess the potential of trials using fictitious organisms for future Japanese biology education.
