In the 1970s, the after-effects of the modernization-movement and back-to-basic orientation were conspicuous in mathematics education of the United States, and people were troubled by their students' low achievement in mathematics. In 1980, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics issued 'An Agenda for Action', which proposed new doctrines and actions for the 1980s. And in 1983, new and more influential recommendations, e.g., 'Nation at Risk' and 'Educating Americans for the 21st Century', were published by the government and other agencies. The importance of education in the nation to cope with the everdeveloping world is advocated. And mathematics is considered as a vital subject in the eduction. Among those recommendations, the author considers the following four points as fundamental for mathematics education of the US in the 1980s: (1) All students, not only those college-capable, should learn more mathematics with more flexible curricula and more time should be devoted to mathematics. (2) Students should be educated to become good problem solvers in mathematics, and a training of skills for the sake of skills has to be diminished in education. (3) Computers and calculators should be utilized at full length in classrooms. (4) Qualification of teachers should be enhanced and good teachers should be recruited from various fields. Nevertheless, there are various problems for these recommendations to be accomplished.
