FINDING A SUSTAINABLE EDUCATIONAL ROLE FOR A NATIONAL SCIENCE MUSEUM: To reach the goal of establishing a national outreach program, the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) experimented with different education components in schools across the nation. Components consisted of: loaning mounted mammals; training teachers in museum staff functions; and transforming students into museum curators, to create an exhibition inside their school. Through the <Mammals in the Schools'>___- program, NMNH discovered how to meet the needs of educators and students. NMNH also learned what type of infrastructure a museum must implement, to support a national outreach program.

There are two school support centers in Hamburg. They are run by the institute for in-service teacher training. In the eighties and nineties the center for biological and environmental education was established for school support and service for field study. In 2000 the center for natural science and technology was founded. There are different departments in the centers for lectures, talks, workshops, projects, campaigns, networks, competitions, tenders, cooperations, lending materials and sale. The main task is to advice and support schools and teachers in organizing situations of learning for science and environmental studies, in organizing primary experiences in nature and environment as well as reacting experiences in problem-solving situations. The centers are offering locations and possibilities for hands-on experiments and field studies, establishing cooperations, coordinating competitions, campaigns and networks, documenting und evaluating results.
