    Compact city with high population density around terminals and along railway lines of public transportation are effective to reduce dependence on automobiles and to support public transportation. However, to promote public transportation utilization, creating of urban spaces that are comfortable for pedestrians is indispensable to accommodate increasingly concentrated populations. Therefore, we analyzed creation of an urban space that is comfortable for pedestrians in virtual city. Specifically, we examined the effects on peoples’ reliance on public transportation. Based on an analysis of the data, we conducted a questionnaire investigation using a stated preference survey (SP survey). Results revealed that it was confirmed that the mode choice and stroll intention may change by creating of urban spaces that are comfortable for pedestrians. Additionally, securing continuous pedestrian-oriented space from residences to their destination would greatly promote public transportation utilization. Moreover, results show that partial creation of such spaces might bring about different effects depending on the pedestrian destinations.
