    The oxidative degradation of red pine holocellulose by peracetic acid (PA) or calcium hypochlorite (HC) was carried out under the comparatively rigid conditions. The yield of the oxidized holocellulose thus obtained was about 60% by degrading with the two reagents for four hours. Under the above conditions, hemicellulose present in red pine holocellulose was faster degraded than cellulose. It was also cleared that araban and xylan in the holocellulose are more unstable than mannan or glucan, and cellulose for degrading with PA or HC. The formation of carbonyl and carboxyl groups in red pine holocellulose was accelerated by the attack with HC, while the formation of these groups by PA degradation of it was in small quantities.
    On determining on the viscosity of a cuoxam solution of red pine holocellulose oxidized with PA or HC, it was found that the chain rupture of polysaccharides in the holocellulose occurs during the oxidative degradation, which gives a lower viscosity motivated by decreasing the actual degree of polymerization of original polysaccharides. The decrease of viscosity of a holocellulose cuoxam solution was more remarkable by degrading with HC than by oxidizing with PA. A lower-viscosity holocellulose prepared by oxidative degradation with HC contained 40m mol. of ketone, 10m mol. of aldehyde and 30m mol. carboxyl groups per 100g. of oxidized holocellulose, whereas the contents of these groups in PA-degraded holocellulose were about 27, 4 and 13m mol. per 100 g, respectively. It was also cleared that mannan present in red pine hemicellulose is more stable than xylan and glucan degraded by PA, while mannan and glucan were similary more stable than xylan during degrading with HC.

    In spite of the well-established concept in this country that the humidity conditioning of paper before being printed on an offset press is essential to achieve a good registering, increasing number of printers have been working to eliminate this troublesome procedure from their processes. In an effort to assist this movement from the papermaker's standpoint, significance of humidity conditiong has been reexamined, placing emphasis on its effect on the registering characteristics of coated papers.
    From the results of registering experiment on a commercial offset press, it is indicated that the humidity conditioning of paper can not be a cure-all by itself. A sheet of poor physical condition with high degree of accumulated stresses is partially stress-relieved, but not to a satisfactory extent unless an inefficient long maturing at a very high relative humidity is applied. On the other hand, only a slight effect of conditioning is observed to be supplemental with a sheet of originally gocd registering characteristics. These results are supported by the supple mental data on the effect of humidity cycling in the relative humidity range of 25-65-95% on the physical properties of coated sheets, such as dimensions, moisture content, humidity expansion and contraction, and water expansion.
    Based on the above observations, the papermaker's part in the project of eliminating humidity conditioning at printing plants is discussed. It is believed to be essential for a papermaker to deliver an originally docile sheet with minimum accumulated stresses, which may not be obtained through a mere moistening treatment afterwards.

    The stretching vibration frequencies and infrared dichroisms for the C=S and C-S groups in the sodium cellulose xanthate and its stable derivative, the sodium salt of cellulose xanthoacetic acid are determined. From these assignments and UV spectra of these compounds, the struture of xanthate group are considered.
    The structure of xanthate group in metalic salt such as sodium cellulose xanthate (Cell.-O-C=S-S--Na+) is different from it in the other derivatives such as the sodium salt of cellulose xanthoacetic acid (Cell.-O-C=S-S-CH2COONa) and methyl cellulose xanthate (Cell.-O-C=S-S-CH3).
    From infrared dichroisms for the C=S and C-S groups, it is considered that the C=S group is perpendicular to the pyranose plane and the C-S group is pararell to the pyranose plane. The absorption at 1510 cm-1 in the sodium cellulose xanthate is assigned to the decomposition products. From these assignments, the purification method of sodium cellulose xanthate from viscose is studied and it is indicated that the ion exchange method is best one.
