The bast fibers from the shoots of “Tan” (Pteroceltic Tatarinowii, Maxim. Ching-tan in China) have been used as one of the most important raw materials for Chinese handmade paper.
The morphology and the structure of the bast fibers of “Tan” were researched under the light microscope as shown in Fig. 13.
Staining reactions with various stains were observed as follows;

The structure of (Tan, Mitsumata, Gampi, manila hemp) swollen by using various swelling agents (17.5% caustic solution, Schweitzer's reagent, 84.5% phosphoric acid) have been given as shown in Fig. 413.
