  • Part.7. Studies on Filler and Pigment Informations of Paper Surfaces Obtained by Electron Probe Microanalysis

    To study filler and pigment distribution on paper surface, electron probe microanalysis was carried out by detecting and sorting of backscattered electron and characteristic X-ray generated at a specimen surface in the scanning electron microscope.
    Both wavelength dispersive and energy dispersive spectrometer systems interfaced to the scanning electron microscope were introduced to this study.
    (1) Backscattered electron image was proved to be effective to characterize filler distribution of uncoated paper.
    (2) Elemental analysis of filler and pigment on paper surface was quickly achieved by energy dispersive spectrometer together with observation of surface topography.
    (3) Distribution pattern of filler and pigment constituents was clearly shown by characteristic X-ray image which was obtained by means of wavelength dispersive spectrometer.

  • Improvement of the Color Removal Efficiency by the Photochemical Treatment

    In the previous reports, it was found that the color of pulping spent liquor of various kinds could be removed by the aid of irradiation with high pressure UV-lamp, though the exposure time was rather long. In continuing this work, an attempt was made to shorten the irradiation time onto NSSCP spent liquor containing 250 ppm of organic materials, because color removal of the liquor has been known for a difficult problem remained unsolved.
    Several factors such as oxygen- or air-bubbling, pH and temperature that would improve the photochemical efficiency were examined. Among these, oxygen bubbling was found to be most effective. On irradiation, the rate of color removal was accelerated in both alkaline and acidic media, and increased with increasing of temperature. As a result, the fastest color removal of 90 per cent and COD decrease of 40 per cent were accomplished under the irradiation condition at pH 12 and 60°C with oxygen bubbling for about 2 hr as shown in Fig. 6.
    In another experiments, various additives were also examined to find better efficiency under the irradiation condition at room temperature for 1.5 hr in alkaline media and for 2.5 hr in acidic media. Addition of 25 ppm of rose bengal and periodate at both pH 12 and 5, and acetyl acetone and hydrogen peroxide at pH 5 could achieve color removal of about 90 per cent as shown in Table 1. Remarkable efficiencies were also recorded in case of less amount addition of rose bengal at pH 12.

    The combined treatment of multistage ozone bleaching with hydrogen peroxide bleaching was carried out with the intention of reducing the intense brightness reversion observed in a simple multistage ozone bleaching of kraft pulps. The features of the two were mutually compared.
    The results obtained are as follows :
    (1) Judging from the features (bleaching yield, pulp viscosity and brightness), the best results were obtained in the hydrogen peroxide bleaching of pulps bleached by multistage ozone treatment, when bleached at the temperature of 70°C for 2 hrs. with adjusting to pH 10.5.
    (2) The P C Nos. of pulps bleached by the combined treatment under the above conditions were reduced to about 20% of those of simple multistage ozone bleached pulps. It was proved that the combined treatment gave sufficient effects f or preventing brightness reversion of kraft pulps bleached by the multistage ozone treatment.
    (3) In comparison with the simple multistage ozone bleaching, the combined treatment yielded same or superior results in pulp viscosity and brightness, although giving poorer pulp yield by about 1%.
