    This review treats of the characteristics of morphological and physical surface of wood pulp. The surface area of pulp varies with the pulping yield and the chemical or mechanical treatments, and the value also changes dependent on the measuring method. Liquid permeability method gives a few square meters of specific surface area for the water-swollen pulp, while the very large one is obtained by gas adsorption method or solute exclusion method. The difference in values is interpreted on the basis of the principle of the method.
    J. E. Stone and A. M. Scallan have studied using the solute exclusion method the changes in surface area during cooking and refining. They correlated the increase in the surface area on refining with the structural changes, namely the internal fibrillation taking the multi-lamellae structure into account. In addition to their works, interpretation on the structure of cell wall offered by other workers was also described.

    In Connection with recent energy problems, administrative countermeasures to be taken by authorities concerned with environment conservation are examined. As a report that may be called a tentative plan for a basis of discussion of this matter has been published, I will introduce its essential points to readers in this article.
    Coal ocuppies an inportant position as a substitute energy for oil, but, in order to use coal on a large scale, there is many a problem characteristic of coal such as air and water pollution and disposal of cinders, etc.
    It is believed that future environmental administration and preparations to receive overseas coal will become key factors if coal is to be utilized according to schedule.
    Environment agency is said to be taking enforcement of environmental regulations into account, but we wish that, recognizing fully the importance of energy problem, it will work out appropriate measures enabling environment to be compatible with energy.

    Marusumi Paper Mfg. Co., Ltd. is located in the city of Kawanoe, which is so famous in Japan as one of massive paper-production centers.
    The city is in the eastern end of Ehime Prefecture, and her northern shore is washed by calm waves of the Seto Island Sea.
    And the city increases her significant weight upon economical activities of western part of our country, as her location being close to each industrial centers such as Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyushu and their satellites.

    Regional distribution of resources is one of the problems to be considered in recycle utilization of resources. In this paper, a general representation of a distribution problem of resources is given at first. This concludes that the problem becomes a linear or nonlinear programming problem, in general, of determining the distribution coefficients of resources so as to minimize a performance index. Next, problems of optimal distribution including the production stage of paper and board are discussed.
    It is shown that the recovery rate of waste paper has an essential role in minimizing the amount of virgin pulp required for production of paper and board. It is also necessary to balance the recovery rate and utilization rate in each region.
