    Yonago Mill manufactures wood-free coated paper and coated bleached paperboards. This Mill started up in 1952 to manufacture dissolving pulp made from hard wood, which locates in Yonagoshi, Tottoriken, Western parts of Japan, about 200 km west from Kyoto.
    The mill has a capacity of 274, 000 t/y of coated paper and coated paperboard with two off-machine coaters, two paper machines and one paperboard machine. Pulp mill supplies hard wood and soft wood bleached kraft pulp of 160, 000 t/y to three machines.
    The mill site area is 548, 000 square meter and number of employees is about 640.
    The mill's water is treated by an activated sludge, coagulation-sedimentation, and sedimentation process. Stack gas from recovery boilers is treated by wet scrubbers. Odor gas from kraft pulp mill is gathered to be burned out in recovery boilers.

    The maximum pressure in the press nip is one of the most important factors on wet paper dewatering in the press nip. By using the pressure-measuring film, the correspondence between the maximum pressure profile and the moisture profile across the machine after the nip was examined at the press part of a paper making machine.
    There was a good correlation between them. So the pressure-measuring film is able to evaluate the press condition across the machine.

    Soaking and spraying treatments were tried for the evaluation of washing efficiency of detergents using felt having been used on the newspaper machine. Measurements of water transmission time, sinking time, surface tension and others were adopted for the tests.
    Results are as follows.
    1) Water transmission time of washed felt shows very good negative correlation with washing efficiency of detergent.
    2) The most suitable HLB of nonionic surfactants exists in the narrow range of 13.5 to 14.0.
    3) Special solvent-blending effect is observed on the spraying treatment.
    4) Penetrating force is an important factor for the washing of felt.
    In addition, information about relationship between pH value of washing system and washing efficiency were studied.

    Research was carried out on production of the pulp of newsprint grade from giant leucaena by CTMP process using NaOH and Na2SO3 as pre-treatment chemicals. The optimum amounts of the chemicals were determined by measuring the qualities of pulp and the required refining energy. The results are as follows :
    (1) The increasing amount of NaOH in the constant concentration of Na2SO3 (ca. 3.5 % on chip) markedly improved the strength of pulp sheet and reduced the required refining energy, but lowered the brightness. On the other hand increasing amount of Na2SO3 in the presence of NaOH (ca. 1.6 % on chip) required the slightly increased refining energy and improved the strength and brightness of the pulp, especially in the range of small addition amount of Na2SO3. The optimum addition amount for NaOH and NaNa2SO3 were found to be 1.62.0 % and 0.81.0%, respectively.
    (2) The CTMP pre-treated with the optimum amounts of chemicals satisfied the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) specification except the brightness and the opacity. The CTMP was required to be bleached with 2 % H2O2 in order to attain to the brightness level of 50 point.
    (3) The amount of COD discharged from this CTMP process using the optimum amounts of chemicals was about 39 Kg/o. d. T. pulp.
