    Cellulose and cellulose derivatives as orgnic materials are devloping a variety of their application fields as inconspicuous but indispensable substances in the region of speciality polymers which requires high and particular functions.
    Several items selected and reviewed in this paper are as fallows ; that is, as items already commercialized, CMC for drilling mud additive, NC for magnetic tape binder and acryl monomer grafted CAB for mending paints of motorcars, and as items which are still in the step of research and development, microfibrillated cellulose prepared by a high pressure homogenizer and micro-crystalline cellulose triacetate which has the ability that completely resolves racemates, were discussed.
    Furthermore, as items under progressing in molecular characterizations which are closely related to functions, some of the recent studies were introduced in conection with the elucidation of activation point in graftpolymerizations, and the determinations of DS, MS and DS distribution by NMR measurement in cellulose derivatives.

    Fuji mill is located at the central part of Fuji city which is closely situated from two biggest marketting cities of Tokyo and Osaka, has started its first paper machine operation in 1951.
    The mill has nine (9) Fourdrinier machines, one twinwire machine and three (3) coater machines, and produces around 70 grades of paper including LWC, glassine paper, post card paper, color wood free paper, newsprint paper, and telephone number paper.
    At present, it also produces Kraft pulp, Ground wood, Refiner Ground wood and De-inking pulp.
    Its capacity of monthly paper production is around 33, 000 tons. The area of Fuji mill is around 40, 000m2 and employees are around 1, 050.

    The biodegradation of konara (Quercus serrata Tumb.) and kunugi (Quercus acutissima Carr.) by shiitake Lentinus edodes (Berk) Sing. TMI 563 was conducted.
    In the early stage of degradation, Lentinus edodes destroyed mainly hemicellulose component. Consequently, crystallinity index of holocellulose, prepared from partially degradated konara, gradually increased with the degradation period to 125 days. Same tendancy was observed in the case of the biodegradation of kunugi.
    On the other side, lignin was slightly degradated. Namely, conjugated carbonyl group was introduced into the structure of lignin.
    Kraft pulp prepared from partially degradated kunugi was compared with kraft pulp from raw kunugi. In the case of 16% active alkali, pulp yield, brightness, breaking length, burst factor were in the same level. But tear factor of the former pulp was lower than that of raw kunugi pulp.

    前報では重包装袋用紙としての紙の力学的性質の検討の一つとして, 落下破袋試験における破袋落下回数の分布より, 破袋がどのような確率過程で発生しているかについて検討を行った。
    本報では紙が繰返し応力を受ける時に, 繰返し疲労強度と紙の物性の変化がどのような形で結びついているかについて検討するために, 繰返し衝撃試験を行って, 用紙の物性の変化を求めた。
    その結果, 紙の繰返し衝撃強度 (破断までの繰返し衝撃回数) nは, 紙の引張破断までの吸収エネルギー量Eと, 1回の衝撃で紙の不可逆変形に消費されるエネルギー量eirr.に関係し, 近似的に次の関係式で示すことができた。

    ただしp : 比例常数, e : 指数
    更にこの1回の衝撃で紙の不可逆変形に消費されるエネルギーeirr.は, 紙の硬さと関連し, 近似的に紙の引張強度Tlと伸び率Elの比Tl/Elの1次式で示されることを見出した。
    紙の破断までの吸収エネルギーEは, 上記の Tl (kgf) とEl (%) の積(Tl×El) に比例し, 今回検討したプレーンの未晒クラフト紙では, その比例常係は0.0688と得られ, また上記の比例常数pの値は, 繰返し衝撃による紙質の変化より0.187と推定できたので, これらをまとめ繰返し衝撃強度nと紙の引張強さTl及び伸び率Elとの関係は, 次の式で示された。
    n=e0.187 [0.688 (Tl×El) /-a (Tl×El) +b-1]
    ここでa及びbは1回の衝撃で紙が受ける衝撃エネルギーに依存する常数であり, 今回の繰返し衝撃の条件では, それぞれ0.025及び0.189と得られた (a, b>0) 。
    なお, 上式を展開した近似式を, 繰返し過程の応用の1例として, のりばり重包装用紙袋の落下破袋試験における平均破袋落下回数と用紙の引張強度及び伸び率との関係に適用し検討したが, 良い近似でその関係式が満足されることを見出した。

    Difficulties in multi-stage bleaching (CEDED) of sulfate pulps from woods of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) are attributed mostly to the wood extractives. However, these are also affected by the unusually high contents of lignin, which may prevent from penetration of cooking liquor resulting in some difficulties in cooking. To soften the trouble, short-time cooking at 180°C was shown to be preferable.
    Cooking of the mixed sugi and akamatsu (Pinus densi flora) woods was proved to be highly effective on dissolving out the harmful former extractives to the spent liquor. Moreover, seasoning of both sugi heartwoods and the woods from thinning forest for a month reveals desirable effect on brightness and color reversion, respctively. Although neither brightness of 84.8 nor PC number of 2.5 of the latter BKP are yet good enough, the values nearly correspond to those 85.1 and 2.2 of BKP from fresh sapwoods of 100 %.
