    The characteristics of cellulose acetate membrane elements and the separation process are discussed, and some of operating history of the reverse osmosis plant are reviewed.
    The cellulose acetate membrane have many advantages on the performance, durability and reliability, which are based on the combination of the membrane performance and element structures.
    A remarkable developments in the application of the membranes has been accomplished mainly in the field of brackish water desalination, the production of ultra pure water for electronics industry, and the municipal wastewater reclamation.

    This paper reviews briefly on technology of kraft pulping proceses.
    1) As cooking processes, reviewing the type and size of digester, computor control, various kinds of countermeasures on yield increase including countercurrent impregnation, AQ additive and combination of Moxy and AQ.
    2) As evaporation and recovery processes, reviewing the tendency of equipment and countermeasures on save energy in these stages.

    Tohoku Paper Co., Ltd. was estabrished in 1970.
    The mill started prodtction in 1971. Located at the western part of Akita City to exploit rich water, wood resouces and labor force etc. and has a pulp mills two continuous digesters capacity of 16, 500 T/M of unbleached kraft pulp from about 60% domestic wood chips and 40% imported wood chips.
    It has a one paper mill capacity of 16, 000 T/M of kraft riner board with inverformer machine.
    The mill area is around 660, 000 m2 and employees are around 330.
  • クレゾール-水系によるアカエゾマツ材のソルボリシスパルプ化とそのシート特性

    Spruce wood (Picea glehnii) chips were cooked with cresol-water mixture of various compositions with or without acetic acid at 180-190°C for 90-120 min. And the properties of the pulps were compared with those of kraft pulp. The difference between delignification behaviors of soft-and hardwoods is discussed in terms of chemical properties of lignins. The results obtained are as follows :
    1) Addition of 10-50 wt% acetic acid of spruce chips improved selective delignification and strength properties of pulp sheets.
    2) Acetic acid addition to the cooking solvent for birch wood (Betula pala palatyphylla var. japonica) gave no effect, in contrast to spruce wood.
    3) Preconditioning at 100°C, for 120 min. gave no effect on the cooking of spruce wood, in contrast to birch wood.
    4) One of the characteristics of solvolysis pulping with cresol-water is that crude yields and screened pulp yields are almost the same, even if the yields are so high as over 70 per cent.
    5) Delignification of spruce wood is more difficult than that of birch wood by the solvolysis. The difference may likely be due to the lignin structures, guaiacyl and syringyl lignins.
  • クラフトパルプ塩素処理廃液の急性毒性とその安定性

    Acute toxicity and its stability of the spent chlorination liquor (SCL) of multi-stage kraft bleaching was examined using a fish (Oryzias latipes) as the test orgainsm. Both red pine (Pinus densiflora) and white birch (Betula platy phylla) were used as wood species representing soft and hard wood species. Results have been summarised as follows :
    1) The toxicity of SCLs was labile to alkali treatment, and the lime treatment could be recommended.
    2) The heating and the ultraviolet irradiation of SCL under acidic condition were not effective to reduce their acute toxicity. On the contrary, the heating increased the toxicity of SCL indicating the formation of new toxicant (s).
    3) The diethyl ether extract yields of treated SCLs varied with the treatments, but there were no constant relationship to toxicity.
    4) The tri-or tetrachloro-guaiacol and their catechol anlogs might not be the main toxicants of SCL.
  • スギクラフトパルプの漂自改善法

    The extractives, especially ferruginol and its derivatives, from the woods of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) are responsible for low brightness and intense color reversion of its bleached sulfate pulps (BKP). The improved methods for better bleaching were suggested as follows.
    1) In the case of mixed sulfate pulps involving less ratios of sugi, which requires a slight impovement in brightness, better bleaching can be achieved simply by adequate increase in ClO2 dosage at D2-stage in the sequence of CE, D1E2D2. Slight improvement in P.C.number may also, but not always, be expectable by this methods.
    2) In the case of more increased ratios of sugi in the mixed pulps, improvement in both brightness and P. C. number can be attained by dosing hydrogen peroxide (P) into E2-stage (i. e. P/E-stage).
    3) Better improvement in brightness and P. C. number is accomplished by adding a slight amount of phase transfer catalyt (PTC) at P/E-stage mentioned above.
    4) Even in case of 100% sugi heartwood pulps, oxygen bleaching affords fully bleached pulps having satisfiable brightness and P. C. number by adopting ODED sequence.
    The improved methods for bleaching of sugi sulfate pulps mentioned above may also be applicable to bleaching of pulps from the other wood species having difficulties due to extractives.
