A boardless operating system using CRT displays has successfully been introduced for a modernized KP plant at Ishinomaki Mill, Jujo Paper. The modernization of the plant took about ten months, a continuous Kamyr digester coming on stream September, 1983 with the CRT, thus completed was the first phase of the modernization program.
The CRT system covers operation of not only such instrumentation devices as attached to control valves but also various motors. Resulting advantage are, among others, easy flexible operation of instrumentation devices/motors and availability of hand operation in the midst of complex controlling.
A computerized control of the KP plant is a target of the second phase, which is under progress. The approach is to build up a whole process out of small autonomous process units.

The A L P mill is within the City and Borough of Sitka, Alaska which has a population of approximately 9, 000 people. Of this number, approximately 400 are employed by A L P and additional support people are employed in the timber operation.
The mill is located at Sawmill cove in Silver Bay, approximately 6 milles east of Sitka. A L P owns a total of 222 acres consisting of 75 acres of upland with the remainder being submerged land, tideland and filled tidelands.
The developed mill site is contained within 34 acres, mostly reclaimed tideland.
A L P started up in 1959 and produces approximately 500 ton per day of dissolving grade sulfite pulp which is exported to Japan and third countries to be used in the manufacture of rayon, cellophane and allied products.

Pulps prepared from the same lot Giant ipil-ipil (Leucaena latisiliqua (L.) Gillis) chips by the Sodium sulphate-sulphur dioxide chemimechaical process (SOX process), the NSSC process, and the KP process were compared with one another on yield, kappa no. and strength.
Giant ipil-ipil SOXP which was obtained in a total yield of 54.3% had a kappa no. of 60.0, a breaking length of 4.39 km, a JIS burst factor 2.22 and a tear factor 59.4.
Giant ipil-ipil NSSCP which was obtained in a yield of 76.8% had a kappa no. of 81.9, a breaking length of 4.12 km, a JIS burst factor 2.32 and a tear factor 80.7.
Giant ipil-ipil KP which was obtained in a total yield of 49.5% had a kappa no. 23.7, a breaking length of 4.12 km, a JIS burst factor of 4.28 and a tear factor of 116.
The paper and paper board obtained from giant ipil-ipil pulp in this way seems to be suitble for the wide range of application.

A large portion of papermaking alum used in mills was found to be retained in the paper. But it was indicated for some mills to use too much alum.
It was shown by comparison of nitrogen content of papers with the dissolved nitrogen in white waters that the total retention of polymer additives seemed to be 6070%. A large amount of polymer additives was found to be accumulated in papers through the recycling of waste papers. The retention of polymers varied widely from one mill to another. Thus there is still a great room for improvement. This fact should be rather emphasized in neutral or alkaline papermaking system.
The relationship between the dissolved inorganic concentration (I : ppm) and the conductivity (C : mS/cm) was shown as follows : I=700 (C-0.05) (0.05 is attributable to organic acids).
The turbidity of centrifuged supernatant of white waters decreased with decreasing zeta potential and the highest degree of clarification was obtained at a zeta potential of -2 to +3 mV.

Twin wire formers have many advantages like a compact structual design and good sheet formation over ordinary Fourdrinier machines.
They, however, tend to give less one pass retention especially with regard to fine fraction of the incoming stock, which is not favorable to some kinds of papers like a LWC base.
In usual operations of twin wire formers, the dewatering rate at the first part of a forming shoe is so high that it is supposed to be one of the reasons of unfavorable fiber losses. Therefore, it seems to be possible to improve fine fiber retention without losing the overall dewatering efficiency at the forming shoe, by modifying the present round shoe profile to one which allows nearly a constant dewatering rate over its whole length.
At first, the dewatering resistance coefficient at the shoe is calculated from the observed dewatering rate in a normal machine operation, together with the theoretical consideration on filtration and thickening of fiber suspension. Then, using that value, the shoe profile which gives a constant dewatering rate in its whole length, is calculated by computer simulation.
As the result, following is obtained.
    R=-6.667L+12.0
    R : radius of curvature
L : surface length on the shoe
It means that the radius of its curvature decreases from ten meters in the begining to two meters at the end by an arithmetical progressional mode.
Though there are some other facters to be taken into consideration, we believe that this kind of simulational approach will lead to a new concept on designing the shoe profiles of twin wire formers, and probably combination formers.
