    The Japan machinery federation established the institute for interchanging studies on industrial microbe utilization as a part of its efforts for interchanging industrial studies among the three parties related to it i. e. the industrial world, the official world and the learned world, and was carrying on studying microbe utiligation for pulp and paper manufacturing processes hence. Recently, the institute made a summarized report on the results of this study. The present writer, who continued to participate in the process of this study as on observer, would like to outline this report for readers and add a few personal views of mine to it.
    The contents of this article may be summarized as follows.
    1. On utilization of microbes.
    2. On bio-pulping.
    3. On the possibility of utilization of microbes.
    1) Scheme of appilication of microbe utilization to pulp and paper manufacturing process in general.
    2) Their utilization for wood chip yard.
    3) Their utilization for deodorizing spent liquor.
    4) Possibility of applicating their utilization to methane fermentation.
    5) Their utilization for raising efficiency of removing COD.

    Kumano Mill in Shingu City, located at the mouth of the Shingu river (Kumano river), was established in 1912. The mill has a capacity 6.8 tons per day with three paper machine. This mill manufactures capacitor tissue paper. The mill arear has about 36, 800 m2. There are total of 130 employees working here.

    Understanding of colloidal behavior of pitch particles in pulp suspension is important for the control of pitch problems in pulp and paper mill operations. This report deals with the effect of simple inorganic electrolytes and polyelectrolytes on the stability of colloidal suspension of white lauan extractives. When various salts were added to a suspension of negativly charged pitch particles, they were easily coagulated due to the charge neutralization. The amount required to cause the coagulation such as increase follows Schulz-Hardy's rule. There were some interesting observations to be noted, such as increase in turbidity of pitch suspension at an early stage of salt addition, and a plateau in the maxinum pitich coagulation with an addition of aluminum sulfate. Addition of cationic polyelectrolytes showed pitch suspension to be coagulated at a concentration of less than 10 ppm. The results suggest that the addition of aluminum sulfate should be carefully controlled if one wishes to avoid pitch problems.

    In order to clear the behavior of glycosidic linkages towards ozone, cellobiose and lactose, as model compounds of carbohydrates, were ozonized under aqueous and acidic conditions. Initial pH values were adjusted with acetic acid (pH 3, 4 and 5) and trifruoro acetic acid (pH1 and 2). All reaction products were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography.
    The results are summarized as follows.
    1) Lactose was ozonized at pH 5.3 and 3.0. Among the reaction products, glucose, galactose and galactonic acid were detected, whereas gluconic acid was hardly detected.
    2) The yield of glucose were always higher than that of galactose. There were no differences between glucose and galactose and between gluconic acid and galactonic acid in the disappearing speed on ozonation. These results indicate that ozonation of lactose caused the oxidative cleavage as well as the hydrolytic cleavage of the glycosidic linkage.
    3) The ratios of hydrolytic cleavage to oxidative cleavage during ozonation of lactose were 3.6 at pH 3.0 and 3.1 at pH 5.3.
    4) Cellobiose was ozonized under acidic conditions. Among the reaction products, glucose, gluconic acid and arabinose were detected.
    The effect of pH on the degradation of cellobiose with ozone was examined. Cellobiose was most stable in the range of pH 2 to 3.

    The distribution curves of electrophoretic velocity of pulp fines or fine solids in white waters were asymmetrical about the cell center when a flat cell was mounted horizontally in the usual way, because the bottom surface charge was changed by the settling of particles. Then the zeta potentials obtained from the upper and lower stationary levels considerably differ from each other. The former values are generally higher than the latter ones. But this situation is reversed if the measurement is carried out at a very high concentration (e. g. 1, 050 ppm) of pulp fines because the fairly long fine fibers settled on bottom change the electroosmotic laminar flow to the turbulent and/or vortical flow. Therefore, the zeta potential should be measured at a low concentration of particles when the cell is mounted horizontally, or measured in lateral arrangement of the cell, and determined from the mean value of electrophoretic velocities at the two stationary levels.
    The zeta potentials of suspended solids in mill white waters had a rough tendency to approach to zero or values at slightly plus side and the distribution curves of electrophoretic velocity generally became more gentle as the pH decreased. But the zeta potentials varied widely in the pH range around neutrality. This fact suggests that cationic polymers are applied in some mills. The distribution curves of electrophoretic velocity became the reversed shapes in a few samples and these showed the presence of significant amounts of unadsorbed alum and/or cationic polymers.
