    Control of the zeta potential in neutral papermaking method is important particularly in the retention of calcium carbonatefillers, and the fixation of neutral sizing agents on pulp fibers. Problems associated with the wet end chemistry of neutral papermaking system are pointed out.
    Examples of the zeta potential control in neutral papermaking mills are presented, and various apparatus and ideas for zeta potential measurements applicable to process control are compared.
    Problems associated with the instrumentation of zeta potential measurements in the process control of neutral papermaking system are also pointed out. The main difficulty lies in estimation of the electrokinetic behavior of paper furnishes on high-speed papermachine because of the hetero-dispersing system and the fiber dispersion under dynamic shear force of the papermachine.
    The development of sensors capable of on-line measurement of the zeta pontential on high-speed papermachine and the construction of mathematical models capable of expressing the electrokinetic behavior of the paper furnishes under dynamic shear farce are prerequisites for incorporation of the zeta potential measurement in the process control system of the neutral papermaking system.

    In order to modify refiner mechanical pulp (RMP), NaOCl·H2O2 and Na0Cl·O3 bleaching of the pulp were carried out under mild conditions. The results obtained were as follows.
    (1) RMP prepared from mixed soft wood was soaked in NaOCl solutions (available chlorine 1-6%, pH 11) for 10 min at room temperature, and after removing excess NaOCl solution, bleached with H2O2 solutions for 1 hr at 50°C or with O3 at 20°C under gaseous phase for a definite time.
    The brightness of RMP bleached by the above two methods under optimum conditions increased from 46 to 70% GE. The yield of pulp bleached by a NaOCl·H2O2 system was about 93%. The residual lignin and pentosan contents in the pulp were relatively high. The water retention value and the sheet density of RMP also increased by the bleaching. The tensile strength and tear factor of RMP sheet after bleaching were 3.5 km and 57, respectively.
    (2) The bleaching of RMP by NaOCl·H2O2 system was clearly a more effective method than NaOCl·O3 system. The brightness and yield of RMP bleached by NaOCl·H2O2 system under optimum conditions were higher than those of NaOCl·O3-bleached RMP. The tensile strength of the NaOCl·H2O2-bleached pulp was lower than that of the NaOCl·O3-bleached pulp, whereas the tear factor was stronger.
    (3) Comparison of the physical properties and mechanical strengths of RMP and TMP bleached under optimum conditions indicated that NaOCl·H2O2 system is generally a more effective method than NaOCl·O3 bleaching

    Pulping of the coir fiber from the coconut husks was undertaken to see the feasibility to use them as pulping materials for kraft, alkaline sulfite and bisulfite cooking processes. In this roport, studies on the effect of the beating for physical properties were mainly investigated. The results were summerized as follows;
    1) The products from the crushed coconut husks for pulping by a use of disk-refiner comprized 40.6% coir fiber, 37.2% coir dust and 22.2% water soluble compounds.
    2) The removal of coir dust from the coconut husks was important for pulping. The pulp yields of coir fiber ranged from 41.7% to 47.1%. However, the pulp yields obtained from the whole husks containg coir dust were reduced to 21.1%-25.5%,
    3) Kraft and alkaline sulfite cooking processes were applicable successfully, mainly on the physical properties of coir pulp. The values of breaking length and tear factor obtained from optimum beaten pulp sheets were about 80% in comparison to those of wood chemical pulps, and the MIT folding endurance was superior to them. Bisulfite pulp gave the good result for brightness, but not for physical properties.
    4) The brightness decreased slowly with increase of beating, but the tendency was not so remarkable.
