The following is the newspaper web offset press and its out spirits system which was unveiled on April, this year, at Fukushima branch factory of YOMIURI SHINBUN-SHA. Future in mind of highly sophisticated FMS of newsprint production line, YOMIURI and MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES have been co-elaborated for these few years. Newly developed items are as follows.
    1) Keyless inking unit for text printing.
    2) CPU aided automatic plate conveying system and its setting robot to the cylinder.
    3) The robotized paster tail pre-making device of paper roll.
    4) The automatic web threading-up system in the press, including branching facility of web path.
    5) Totalized press control system.

Considering that fillers are found as filler aggregates in paper, image analysis of filler aggregates was done to evaluate the structure of filler loaded papers. The results are summarized as follows.
    (1) Observation of paper cross sections with a Nomarski differential interference microscope provides image of the filler aggregates which are suitable for image analysis.
    (2) Z-directional count, z-directional width, area, and area fraction are chosen as geometrical parameters of filler aggregates. Geometrical parameters can be easily evaluated by image analysis of filler aggregates.
    (3) The linear correlation between area fraction and filler content shows that the porosity of filler aggregates dose not change with increasing filler content. A good correlation was found between the pore volumes of filler aggregates derived from area fraction and from mercury intrusion technique, respectively.

In the previous paper (1), it was shown that the vessel pick number of a handsheet decreased effectively with high consistency beating (PFI mill) treatment for vessel-rich pulp which was separated with a hydrocyclone from tropical hardwood pulps. This paper describes the prepara-tion of bleached kraft pulp from mixed tropical hardwood chips and the effects of various beating methods on the vessel picking during offset printing on pilot machine made paper. Beateing was carried out using 12-and 20-inch single disc refiner, Deluxe Finer (Aikawa Iron Work Co. Ltd.) and PFI mill.
It was found that printing paper made from hardwood pulps beaten at low consistency to the freeness value lower than conventional 400ml CSF was most suitable for offset print among the beating conditions tested. Printing papers made from high consistency refined pulps has lower vessel picking tendency only for laboratory scale printability testers.
The accepted pulp obtained by hydrocyclone treatment, which containes fewer and smaller vessel elements, showed low vessel picking tendency under the conventional low consistency refining.
Sulfate cooking of hardwood chips with lower active alkali addtion produced higher quality pulps, which resulted in superior printablity.
The results obtained from the comparison of handsheets vessel picking tendency suggest that though high consistency refined pulp produces high density sheets, the inter-fiber bonding is not so firm that it easily loses bonding strength under the filler addition, calendering during paper making and moisture during offset printing.

It is very important to understand the relationship between kraft cooking conditions and pulp characteristics (pulp viscosity, lignin free pulp yield) for the purpose of obtaining the kraft pulp with good quality at high yield.
The chips of Fagus crenata Blume (Buna) and Pinus densiflora S. et Z.(Akamatsu) were cooked and we could exactly set up cooking conditioas by using experimental apparatus at high liquor to wood ratio. The experimetal data were analysed by using statistical method. The following useful informations were consequently obtained.
    (1) The effective cooking factors on pulp viscosity were cooking temperature, alkali concentration and cooking time, but hydrosulfide ion concentration and chip thickness were not so effective from estimation of proportion of variance.
    (2) It is very effective to drop cooking temperature, to drop alkali concentration and to shorten cooking time for the purpose of raising kraft pulp viscosity.
    (3) Raising 1ignin free pulp yield is often incompatible with mising kraft pulp viscosity.
Tberefore, it is very important to set up the most suitable cooking conditions which are fitted to each use of kraft pulp.
