    This paper discribes an outline of 1987 TAPPI Coating Conference. 1987 TAPPI Coating Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Houston, Houston, Texas in May 17-21, 1987.
    The address theme of the conference is “Personal Involvement Pays Dividends.” Included in the technical program are 17 technical papers, 6 roundtable discussions, a panel discussion and a plant tour.
    The contents of each sessions are as follows,
    Session 1: Opening session 2: Blade Coating 3: Coating Process 4: Coating Binders 5: Drying 6: Highlight Speaker 7: Control of Coating Structure 8: Coating Pigments 9: Base Stock 10: Highlight Speaker 11: Coating Rheology 12: Coating Equipment 13: Grade Development
    It is estimated about 1000 persons joined the conference from USA, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Germany and over the world. And it is believed 10 persons participated to it from Japanese companies, that is, paper mills, raw material suppliers and a machine manufacturer.

    Research Association of Pulp and Paper Technology (RAPPT) consists of 18 pulp and paper making companies and 8 machinery companies was established in September, 1982 for the purpose of effective promotion of technical development of the pulp and paper industry in Japan.
    To develop the new energy saving method RAPPT researched Direct Causticizing Process, High Solid Concentration of Black Liquor Process, High Consistency Paper Making Process and High Efficiency Drying Process. Expected data were obtained after laboratory test and pilot plant test.

    The influence of beating level of fibers on the structure and properties of paper was investigated. For this experiment, handsheets were prepared from either softwood kraft pulp or hardwood kraft pulp beaten to two level of freeness. The filler used was a precipitated calcium carbonate. The results may be summarized as follows:
    (1) The number of fibrous layers (Nf) at a given basis weight (excluding filler) increases with increasing filler content. The incremental increase in Nf is larger for sheets with a higher level of beating.
    (2) The geometrical parameters of filler aggregates differ depending on the fiber type, but are not affected by beating level of fibers. Both z-directional count and area fraction of filler aggregates for softwood sheets are lager than those for hardwood sheets.
    (3) The contributions due to fiber debonding (Sd) and the filler itself (Sr) to the total light scattering coefficient were calculated, assuming that these contributions were independent and additive. The calculation was bases on the light scattering coefficients of filled sheets and sheets with filler removed. It is apparent that the contribution due to fiber debonding is larger in highly beaten sheets, but that of the fiber itself does not change.
    The results obtained from both structural and optical property analysis show that the increase in optical efficiency of the filler with beating is due to the increased debonding of the fibers.

    Swollen volume, specific heat and heating value of AP and KP black liquor of softwoods & hardwoods were compared.
    Swollen volume of AP black liquor is lower than that of KP black liquor, especially of softwoods. Swollen volume of Eucalyptus AP black liquor is nearly equeal to that of Eucalyptus KP black lipuor.
    Specific heat is solids concentration and temperature dependent and it made little difference between AP and KP black liquor. In the case of softwoods, heating value of KP black liquor is a little higher than that of AP black liquor. But AP black liquor of hardwoods has higher heating value compared with KP black liquor.
