    Papermachine wet felt has been, and still is considered as a black-box in the entire paper making processes due to the difficulty of describing its real characteristics and functions by numerical and quantitative manner.
    This paper discusses the historical review of water removal at the press section and discusses further on the subject of felt construction and quality-past and present-showing various pictures and felt designing philosophy. Finally, authers introduce new products of wet felts and blankets for various type of “epock-making” shoe presses.

    Micro Spots in paper tend to appear in usage of the waste paper more than the virgin pulp as materials of paper. For the solution of problems in paper making, the causes of the micro spots should be revealed. However, in many cases, collection of the specimens are so difficult that it is hard to investigate the causes of the micro spots in paper with such ordinary methods as the observation of the spot by microscopy, UV irradiation, solvent extraction, iodine-starch reaction, ninhydrine reaction etc.
    This paper describes on the application of Infrared Microspectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to analyze of the micro spots in paper. Infrared Microspectroscopy was useful for the analysis of the filamentous plastic pieces, and the hotmelt pieces in paper specimen such small as 1mm in diameter. SEM was also useful for the detection of the thermoexpandable microcapsules and the micro spots based on a piece of coating color, because the SEM gives a clear picture depending to the wide range at the depth of focus.

    The effect of calcium carbonate filler content and polymer concentration as wellas the average flow velocity on the formation of flocs were determined under dynamic flow conditions using a newly devised flow system. Flocculation behavior was evaluated by laser-optical method and the output signals were analyzed using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analyzer. The data wereexpressed as the relative flocculation index and the power spectrum density.
    It was found that the flocculation tendency increases with stock consistency anddecreases with flow velocity within the present experimental ranges. Calcium carbonate filler in the absence of polymer tends to hinder flocculation of pulp fibers. Polymer addition tends to help apparent stabilized dynamic flocculation at relatively lower flow conditions. The results also suggest that the formation offiller-filler flocs as well as fiber-fiber and fiber-filler takes place in the present flow systems.

    Pulping of the coir fibers from the coconut husks was undertaken to see the feasibility to use them as raw materials for soda-oxygen pulping process. In this report, the effect of oxygen on single-and two-stage soda-oxygen pulping processes were mainly investigated.
    In the single-stage alkaline oxygen pulping, obtained pulp was partially defiberized without beating by cooking with 20% NaOH and Oxygen at pressure of 3.5 kg/cm2 using rotary autoclave of 4 litter volume. However, the pulp was defiberized completely when oxygen increased to 7.0 kg/cm2. Soda pulp without oxygen, which was obtained under the same cooking conditions, was not defiberized. The strength properties of the pulp were higher than those of the soda pulp but lower than those of the kraft pulp. The disadvantage was that pulp yield and brightness value were considerably lower than those of the soda pulp.
    In the two-stage alkaline oxygen pulping, the fibers were cooked by soda pulping as the first stage, then after the obtained first stage pulp cooked again under mild conditions with 10% NaOH, at 110°C of maximum temperature and under 7.0 kg/cm2 of oxygen. The strength properties of the pulp were similar to those of kraft pulp. The pulp yield was lower than soda pulp but higher than single-stage pulp. The brightness was so improved remarkably as higher than that of soda pulp.
