The theme of the conference was “Charting New Horizons.”
The program was composed of 46 technical papers, four roundtables, a supplier showcase, a poster session, and conference tours.
The Technical Program featured these 14 sessions:
    1. Printing, 2. Additives, 3. Pigment Shape, 4. Basestock, 5. Mottle, 6. Binders, 7. Makedown-Coating Preparation, 8. Sizing, 9. Market Trends, 10. Fundamentals, 11. Coating Structure, 12. Drying, 13. Mottle, 14. Process Control
About 1, 100 persons attended the conference from around the world, including USA, Canada, Sweden, Finland, and Germany. In addition, about 20 persons were from Japanese companies and foreign subsidiaries.

As it was said formerly that the paper is produced by the beater, refining is still one of the most important processes in stock preparation. It has a great effect on the product quality, especially for high grade papers. The refining is required to extract different characteristics from the original pulp. Then poor refining technology limits the competitiveness of the paper manufactures.
Since the refining process requires a large portion of the power supply for paper manufacturing regardless of the product, its adequacy results in ultimate saving in energy and cost reduction.
The main purpose of the refining has been the fiber's fibrillation being called wet-beating. This basic theory is still alive even today. However, since the most of paper machines have become wide and high speed recently, the free-beating theory has been mainly adopted to improve the sheet formation rather than the wet-beating in the past. Most of the beating facilities being now used are double disc type refiner, because the double disc refiner can meet all requirement stated above by changing its disc plate pattern, the disc plate material and the refiner operating condition.
This paper describes the current technology for the refiner and the refining in the stock preparation field ahead of paper machines and the countermeasures for the refiner-power saving.

In order to obtain a better recognition concerning recent pulp and paper research by using biotechnological technique, various definitions and interpretations were provided for some of important terms. The object of this series is to be familiar with the principles, the methods and importance of biotechnological research for many members of JAPAN TAPPI. This committee considers that the popularization of biotechnological terms is required significantly in the recent situation. This section (I) deals with chromosome, DNA and biosynthesis of proteins related to the mechanism of inheritance.

Calcium alginate fiber paper was prepared by blending alginate with partially acetoacetylated polyvinyl alcohol (LPVA), having ultraviolet light-induced crosslinking reactivity, in order to improve its physical strength, especially wet-sheet strength. The opacity of the composite fiber paper decreased with an increase in LPVA content, ultimately appearing like a film sheet. The effects of LPVA on the physical strength of the fiber paper are very similar to the effects of beating and refining on the cellulosic paper during fabrication. The tensile and burst strength of the paper is different from the tear strength. The optimum tensile strength of the air dry fiber paper was obtained when LPVA content was 10%. Ultraviolet light exposure on the wet sheets improved wet tensile strength. With the addition of LPVA up to 30%, the composite alginate showed fiber spinnablity and paper formation with entrapping the various functional materials.

Significance of recycling waste paper dicharged out of offices, especially so-called waste Office Automation (OA) papers such as Xerographic copied or computer printed paper, is getting more importance from the view points of saving forest resources and fossil fuel as well as managing municipal garbage.
However, considerable portion of these papers are cut into thin stripes by shredders at offices to keep confidenciality. And it is widely refered that the paper-making properties of such shredded waste paper are deteriorated mainly because of pulp fiber cutting.
The authors have investigated the effect of shredding on fiber length and mechanical strengths of recycled handsheets from Xerographic copied papers and obtained the following results.
    (1) The weight average fiber length was decreased by shredding as much as several percentage in case of 3-6 mm shredding width, and 18% in case of 1 mm width.
    (2) Tensile strength of handsheets from shredded papers in 3-6 mm width showed litte difference compared with unshredded. However, a significant drop was found in case of shredding of 1 mm width. Similar tendecies were conceived in tear resistance and folding endurance.
    (3) The decrease in fiber length of shredded paper was smaller than that calculated from a simulated cutting of a random sheet of model fibers. It was implied that shredding of paper was partly carried out by pulling fiber out, not breaking it. This was confirmed from observation on the edge of cut paper by electron micrographs.
