    The sheet properties are discussed in terms of the sheet forming processes ;
    The two-sided nature of the formation and the surface porous system of the sheets made on fourdrinier and hybrid formers (shoe type and roll type) were varied according to the variation of the dewatering prosess. The anisotropy distribution through the thickness of the sheets made on high speed gap former was also varied with the changing of jet/wire ratio.

    New technology in sizing and strength agents reflecting trends in the paper industry have been introduced.
    The conversion from acid to neutral/alkaline papermaking has progressed rapidly. Rosin size that is used for paper sizing at a neutral pH is required and has been developed. For these circumstances, we have developed new rosin size, NeuSize 700, which achieves effective sizing at a neutral pH (pH6.37.5). The charactaristics of NeuSize 700 have been introduced.
    Meanwhile there are many examples of applying strength agents of copolymerization types that gives a stable effect under strict papermaking condition. New strength agents of copolymerization type, the Harmide EX-300 series, have been obtained by the application of a new polymerization technique possessing many charactaristic different from usual strength agents. These charactaristics of EX have been summarized.

    Typical commercially avaiable polyaminoamide-epichlorohydrin (PAE) wet strength resins contain average 11% (solids/solids) low molecular weight organic chloride contaminants, based on GC and NMR analyses. The total organic chloride (TOCL) consists of unreacted epichlorohydrin, and the byproducts dichloropropanol and chloropropanediol formed during resin synthesis. These TOCL components are distributed throughout the water, paper and atmosphere of papermaking systems in substantial quantities under commonly used PAE dosage conditions.
    Optimizing the resin production process provides low TOCL PAE resin, Fibrabon 3400, which maintains the high level of wet strength performance while reducing. ca. 95% of the TOCL contaminants.
    This paper is based on the presentation “Reduction of Total Organic Chloride Contaminants in Polyaminoamide-Epichlorohydrin Wet Strength Resins” presented at Papermakers Conference, April, 1991, by David I. Devore et al. of Henkel Corporation in the United States.

    Hofmann degraded PAM has high qualities as dry-strength resins, but it loses the cationicity in the aqueous solution.
    Many attempts have been done to commercialize the high qualities of Hofmann degraded PAM without the denaturation of the properties.
    We have now reached the results that Hofmann reaction at the high temperture for the short time can also be suitable reaction conditions to produce Hofmann degraded PAM for the drystrength resins.
    The results of search have made possible to supply Hofmann degraded PAM with the best quality by setting the reaction apparatus near the paper machine. (We call the apparatus “Hofmanizer system” and the product “New Hofmann PAM”.)
    “New Hofmann PAM” is characterized by the very high ability of adsorption on the surface of pulp fibers which brings the following three major advantages;
    (1) high drainnage…to increase the operation speed
    (2) high effect of dry-strength…to cut down on the amount
    (3) high retention…to reduce the load of waste water treatment
    The consumer trials were conducted several times and good results have been obtained.

    Reduction of basis weight, higher machine speeds of modern printing prosses, increasing use of multicolored print and modifications to printing ink formulations, require the paper producers to enhance and modify the paper quality to meet these ever increasing stringent demands. Stricter criterion is being placed on sheet formation, dimensional stability, internal strength, wet-ability, absorption and surface strength of the paper.
    Chemicals designed to improve only print quality may mean an on-cost to the already expensive paper production process. We would like to highlight the effects and influence of specific process chemicals which positively contribute to enhancing paper and printing quality but in addition provide improvements in machine runnability.

    The Lamb Rolaload Automatic Speed Loading System is a simple, reliable, and cost-effective way in which to load and unload material, damage-free, that allows extremely short turn-around times for trailers that are modified for automatic handling but not limited solely to that service. The system consists of three key elements. First are relatively simple modifications that are made to trailers. Second is the coupling at the loading dock that facilitates positioning of the trailer in proper alignment for loading. And, finally, the Loading/Unloading conveyor on the dock upon which the loads are pre-arranged that delivers the load into (or out of) the vehicle.

    In Europe, particularly in Germany, there has been a rising tendency in recent years for paper mills to adopt automatic warehouse systems (which utilize vacuum roll lifters) as an intermediate roll storage facility at the first stage of the finishing process.
    The automatic warehouse system utilizing vacuum roll lifters is composed of :
    1. A vacuum roll lifter
    2. A crane plus a crane controller
    3. Conveyor systems for roll feeding and discharge
    4. A computer system for storage control
    5. A building and incidental equipment
    Vacuum roll lifters, so designed as to lift rolls upright by applying suction on the roll ends with vacuum force, have such features as follows :
    1. Substantial space economy is attainable because rolls are placed upright on the warehouse floor.
    2. Larger diameter rolls can be handled without damage.
    Because of these superior features, construction and management of an economical warehouse system can be attained with the vacuum roll lifters.

    New Kamyr continuous digester for LBKP was started up in 1990 at Tomioka mill. At the same time, blow K-No. control system was introduced to the digester. In this method, temperature of C 6 heater is controled by Hatton Equation. Prior to this application, we checked how accurately Hatton Equation estimates K-No. and also how the compaction factor in the cooking digester should be determined.
    The results are summarized as follows.
    (1) The outcome of our experiment shows that Hatton Equation works well and is slightly affected by wood species and liquor/wood ratio.
    (2) Hatton Equation is better used for alkaline concentration of C 6 liquor than that of C 4 or C 5 liquor.
    (3) The compaction factors at C 5, C 6 and extraction stages which were measured in the laboratory are 1.07, 1.73 and 2.11 respectively.
    (4) Three coefficients of Hatton Equation were calculated by non-linear least squares method. Standard deviation of blow K-No. was improved from σ= 0.77 to σ= 0.23 by means of the blow K -No. control system.
    (5) It was found that H-factor in the washing zone should desirably be taken into account in estimating blow K-No..

    In the old newspaper (ONP) high consistency DIP system, there are three key factors to determine the pulp brightness, that is;
    -Bleaching effect
    -Separation of the ink particles from the fiber
    -Removal of the separated ink
    It was proven in our DIP trial that removal of fines such as the separated ink, ash, fine fibers, etc. before high consistency treatment stage largely affects to these three factors.
    The main reason for such effect is considered that materials wasting the hydrogen peroxide and alkaline agent was taken out of system, that is, the ink vehicle itself, heavy metals that will be included in the fine ink vehicles, and fine fibers.

Various cellulase were examined, the best results were obtained with VESSELEX. The vesselpick number were greatly decreased, and freeness and mechanical strength were increased without any loss of yield. To optimize the cellulase treatment, temperature, pulp consistency, contact time, and enzyme concentration were investigated. The results showed that cellulase exhibite sufficient effect at low enzyme concentration (0.02-0.03%) for only 4 hours reaction time. This enzymatic process is especially effective in case of useing the eucalyptsus cips, which have large vessels, and is simple to adapt into existing procese.

    The problems associated with the production process are complex and large in scale, because of cross-machinery constraints such as limits on the supply of energy and pulp, and the combination of different products during the same production period. Production scheduling is implemented in three steps : group product allocation, individual allocation, and pulp and energy balance adjustment.
    The system provides a knowledge maintenance tool by employing several CRT screens, and the expert shell used is Toshiba's “ASIREX” which runs on the AS 3000 series engineering workstations.
