    Production of mechanical pulps (MP) have been increased for useful utilization of woods. However, MP have two main problems on use of it. One is hard-bleachability and the other is light-induced color reversion. On hard-bleachability, MP having higher brightness can be produced by improvement of bleaching methods and development of pulping processes. But the problem of the color reversion has not solved yet, though many works on prevention of the color reversion have been conducted.
    This paper describes about the prevention of light-induced color reversion of mechanical pulps. And furthermore, a mechanism of the color reversion, change of lignin caused by pulping process and effect of the change on the color reversion, and effect of bleaching of MP on the color reversion are also described.

    Recent trends in the chemistry and applications of functional dye materials for information recording are reviewed. Colorants for hard copy systems and optical recording media are the most important applications in this field. Molecular design of dye chromophores can be conducted by molecular orbital method to estimate their absorption spectra, dipole moment, transition moment, and so on. And then, material design induced from physical properties of dyes in molecular level can be attained. On the other hand, material design evaluating the macroscopic properties such as conductivity, thermal and photochromic properties of dye aggregates or crystals can not be achieved yet. Empirical and experimental approaches to correlate the macroscopic properties of dye aggregates with chemical structure are anticipated to advance the material science of dye chromophores. The chemistry of color former, cycolor system, decolorizable toner, radical photography, dry type photography, diazo materials, OPC and related chemicals are summarized. Dyes for D2 T2, optical recording media for DRAW, photochromic dye and dye for PHB are also presented.

    平成3年10月2日, コクヨホールで約240名が参加して第15回紙パルプ計装技術発表会が開催された。品川駅の海岸口前にある堂詞会場は小じんまりとした大変立派なホールで, 他の催しと錯綜することがなく昨年同様落ち着いた雰囲気の中で行われた。

    Since the launch of the first conical-disc (CD) refiner in the late 1970's, Sunds Defibrator's CD-Refiner concept has proven extreamly cost effective for single and/or two-stage production of TMP, CTMP and other high yield mechanical pulp from wood chips. The key machine shall be the 86 CD refiner, together with other RGP series refiners, to answer modern mechanical pulps go ahead some 33 million tons production in comming 1995.
    The main design integrates refiner frame, drop-in shaft unit, refining housing and stator plate to provide an exceptionally rigid machine construction. The rigidity built into the machine minimizes deflections under heavy refining load. The unique conical design plate provides a number of advantages, including good stability, efficient steam separation and excellent load potential. Constant plate gaps are maintained, with help of well known True Disc Clearance (TDC) sensor, over the entire conical disc (CD) and flat disc (FD) zones individually and sequres continuous production of uniform quality pulps.
    New generation Sunds Defibrator RGP series refiners have opened wide selection to tailormade pulping and been installed or sold more than 260 sets in last 12 years ; 124 sets of them are CD refiners with connected motors 10-25 MW at 1, 500/1, 800 rpm.
    Conflo refiner CF-82 has also stepped into post stage-a real tool for improve low consistency refining of mechanical pulps. It provides a new development to approach shives removal and/or fiber length adjustment without detrioration of pulp strength properties.
    Sunds Defibrator is focusing considerable resources and efforts on various development projects to chart the influence of conical disc angle, rotation speed up to 2, 400 rpm, simple stage refining etc. on total energy saving. In the near future, the company plans to launch a wholy new refining concept brought from these development.

    A new method for evaluating water retention and dewatering behavior of coating colors by base paper is proposed by developing an apparatus to measure the amount of absorbed liquid as a function of time. The device is composed of an upper chamber containing coating color and a lower chamber containing water, the two being separated by a flexible plastic foil. The water in lower chamber is connected to a measuring glass capillary. The paper sample was attached to a plastic plate by double sided-sticking tape and was placed on the filter surface at the top of the upper chamber. Dewatering from coating color was measured by tracing the movement of meniscus in the capillary with automatic optical detector. The movement of meniscus was converted to the amount of dewatering, which was then analyzed by personal computer. The result of this method was compared with those of the conductivity method. The features of dewatering curve were dependent on the type and particle size of pigments, the type and amount of soluble binders.
    Dewatering behavior of coating color was found to be sensitive to dispersion state of the pigment and pH of the color. Thus the present method proved to be effective for directly and automatically evaluate dewatering phenomena of coating color by base paper. This method is superior to the conductivity method because of higher reproducibility and directness of the measurement, thus providing direct and useful information about water retention mechanism of coating colors.

    Two dimensional flow model of a short-dwell coater pond was developed by computational fluid dynamics. The coating color viscosity was found to be the most dominant operational parameter which influences the fluid flow and eddies in the pond. In the case of pseudo-plastic color, two eddies were created in the pond. There was one at the blade tip which was estimated to be detrimental to the uniform coated weight profile. The other eddy near the inlet was deduced to contribute to good mixing of color. Detailed information of pressure and viscosity near the blade was obtained.

    A new apparatus was developed to directly measure water or oil absorption by papersheets as a function of contact time. Water and oil absorption volume by handsheets of various basis weights or degree of beating was measured by using this apparatus. The results showed that liquid absorption volume was strongly dependent on pore volume of handsheets made of pulps beaten to various degrees.
    Water retention value (WRV) of the papersheet was determined by applying the WRV measurement method for pulp to papersheet. An increase of interfiber void volume due to swelling was calculated as [Water absorption volume] - [Oil absorption volume] - [WRV of papersheet].
    For each paper sample made of hardwood bleached kraft pulp beaten to various degrees, this value was nearly equal to the oil absorption volume, which is regarded as the interfiber void volume of dried papersheet.
