    DCS (Distributed Control System) is now widely used in the process industry field, driving out analog panels from centralized control rooms.
    However there are still unsatisfactory parts in the system functions such as control softwares, human-machine interfaces and system structures.
    Considering the history and the future trend of the instrumentation, some items to be improved or to be noted are described in this paper.

    Hitachi Zosen Corporation manufactures Double Disc Refiners for mechanical pulping under license from Andritz-Sprout-Bauer and handles single refiners of this brand as a part of refining systems. This paper introduces outline of the Double Disc Refiner (DDR) together with its feeding systems, Twin Refiner and Single Disc Refiner (SDR).
    On the other hand, Hitachi Zosen Tomioka Machinery Co., Led. manufactures DDR and conical refiners mainly for stock preparation under license from Sulzer Escher Wyss GmbH of Germany. Second half of this paper presents their outlines followed by a literature on effective use of the refining energy written by Dr. Siewert and Mr. Selder of Sulzer Escher Wyss.

    Practical experience has shown that existing method of drainage determination, such as Freeness, can result in poor correlation with forming section performance. The G/W Drainage-Retention Tester is an instrument intended to monitor the entire drainage pattern to better predict furnish behavior on a paper machine.
    The studies were conducted to evaluate the GWDRT and results showed that the GWDRT can be used to study the entire drainage profile of a furnish. Data collected can be used to determine and compare pulp characteristics in terms of free drainage, overall drainage, retention, solids levels, and formation. Rather than evaluate and report drainage with a single number, the GWDRT has the ability to provide data which distinguishes between free drainage and overall drainage. Experience has also shown that GWDRT can detect differences in the drainage characteristics of different pulps that conventional CSF Freeness Testers were unable to detect. These features make the GWDRT an invaluable tool for both mill control and research purposes.

    Screening of fungi having ability to suppress light-induced color reversion of mechanical pulps (GP, PGW and TMP) was conducted by using 8 wood-rot fungi. Treatment of unbleached pressurized groundwood pulp (PGW) with Stereum hirsutum followed by alkaline hydrogen peroxide bleaching was found to give relatively high effect on depression of the color reversion of PGW. The effect was 23% to that of the untreated pulp. And furthermore, treatment of unbleached PGW with Trametes seriatis followed by bleaching was also found to be effective to depression of the color reversion of PGW. The effect was 16% to that of the untreated pulp. On the contrary, no highly suppressive fungus against the color reversion of GP and TMP was found among 8 fungi tested here. However, T. seriatis and S. hirsutum suppressed 17% and 14%, respectively, to the color reversion of TMP. Futhermore, S. hirsutum could also suppress 16% to that of the color reversion of GP.
    The fungi having great suppressive effect on light-induced color reversion can be screened out through the following four steps. Fungi depressing post color (P. C.) number of the pulps in the early stage of incubation were selected (1) after the treatment of mechanical pulps with fungi, (2) after the treatment with extracellular crude enzyme solution and Z (3) after the treatment with crude enzymes prepared from extracellular crude enzyme solutions. And in the final step, investigation to find out best conditions for maximizing suppression of the color reversion should be made by using the selected fungi. The screening method can be applied to the selection of microorganisms having ability to suppress light-induced color reversion of mechanical pulps.

    The interaction of binder latices with the surface of coating base paper was studied by the technique of osmium tetroxide fixation combined with pH control by buffer solution. The technique, formerly applied to latex-clay systems, was found useful too in visualizing the electrostatic interaction between latex and cellulose fibers. A pulp fiber (bleached softwood kraft pulp) and three types of crystalline cellulose microfibrils (i. e., Valonia cellulose, bacterial cellulose, and cotton-derived microcrystalline powder), all having negative zeta potentials, showed strong interactions with amphoteric latex particles under acidic conditions. The intensity of interaction, as judged from the number of adsorbed latex particles, was consistent well with the order of absolute values of zeta potential. The other combinations of latex type and pH, i. e., amphoteric latex at high and anionic latex at both high and low pHs, resulted in virtually no binding between the components.
    These findings, together with the former observations of latex-clay systems, indicate that the use of amphoteric latex provides useful means of controlling the coating processes, i. e., prevention of binder migration or formation of bulky coating layer, through rapid immobilization of latex and/or clay particles at the base paper-coating color interface. Such interactions would also be useful in other areas of paper manufacture including internal sizing or off-machine latex impregnation.

    An acoustic emission (AE) measurement system, including a logarithmic amplifier, was applied in both normal and zero-span tensile test modes. The mechanism of tensile deforming and fracturing of paper was investigated, relating to the fiber-fiber bond failure and fiber failure. During straining, fiber-fiber bonds with low bonding energy begin to fail at first. Subsequently, fiber-fiber bonds with high bonding energy and the fiber themselves start to fail. The fiber failure fairly occurs during fracturing of paper.
