Cellulose in a β 1, 4 linked biopolymer of glucose. The gram-negative bacterium Acetobacter xylinum has the ability to produce cellulose as an extracellular polysaccharide. The cellulose synthase of A. xylinum utilizes UDP-glucose as a precursor. The enzyme is specifically activated by cyclic diguanylic acid (c-di-GMP). The 83 kDa polypeptide of A. xylinum ATCC 53582 was identified to be the cellulose synthase catalytic subunit by photoaffinity labeling. The gene encoding for this polypeptide and the gene for the 93 kDa polypeptide were cloned as an operon for cellulose biosynthesis. In another report, the cellulose synthase operon consisting of four genes in A. xylinum 1306-3 was isolated by genetic complementation. A specific role for the purified 90, 67, 54 kDa synthases in A. xylinum was confirmed with photoaffinity labeling. The anti-cellulose synthase antibodies immunologically related with polypeptides in plants and other cellulose-producing microorganisms.

It has bees twenty years since CENIBRA was founded in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
CENIBRA is a joint venture of “Japan Brazil Paper and Pulp Resources Development Co., Ltd.” and “Companhia Vale do Rio Doce”.
Recently, they produce more than 370, 000 tons BKP (Bleached Eucalyptus Kraft Pulp) anually, and all pulpwoods come from their own planted forests.
At the biginning of plantation, they chose mainly three species, E. grandis, E. saligna and E. urophylla.
In general, the productivities of forest trees are influenced by genes and enviroment. But if there are not skills of afforestation and improvement of breed, high growth of trees is not expected.
At first, they set up three “Breeding Areas”, after they studied on altitude, temperature, rainfall, shortage of water in soil and types of soils. And they stopped using mixed seeds and mixblooded seeds. Then they began to use pureblooded seeds from Eucalyptus origin country, Australia.
Furthermore, they made the seed orchards to perform max selection, individual selection and progency test.
As the results of these examinations, planning a strategy of planting seedlings in highlands and planting cultivated cuttings which have disease resistance in lowlands, E. grandis showed the highest growth among the three species. From now on, they have to promote the research of high productivity on hybrids.
“Right tree on right site” does not occur unexpectedly. It should be created with using all sorts of techniques and human experiences.

The first cycle, machine direction hygroexpansion behavior was investigated for two different commercial newsprint papers known to perform differently for color offset printing. While these two papers differ with regard to furnish, it is believed that the presence of Kubat internal stress has a significant effect on the first cycle of hygroexpansion behavior as suggested by experimental results. Although the traditional approach to hygroexpansion is to measure the so-called hygroexpansion coefficient, usually after preconditioning, valuable information can be attained from first cycle hygroexpansion experiments since this is often the behavior encountered for newsprint sheets during color offset printing.

When Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora) was used as a main resource for groundwood pulp (GP), a group of triglycerides (TG) was identified as one of the most troublesome components which caused pitch problems in paper making process. As reported previously, lipase could hydrolyze TG to less sticky components and prevent pitch deposition.
Lipase (Resinase A 2 X) produced in industrial scale from Aspergillus sp. at Novo Nordisk A/S was selected for this purpose from several lipases. The effect of enzyme dosage and profiles of pH and temperature on hydrolysis of TG were investigated in laboratory scale. As a result, more than 70% hydrolysis of TG was achieved at 500ppm dosage to GP. The enzyme showed the stable activity in the condition of 60°C, at pH 4 and 70°C, at pH 7. Based on the laboratory results, the first trial was carried out in Isinomaki mill unbleached GP fiber line of Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. The mill trial has demonstrated a dramatic reduction in pitch problems as well as several other unexpected advantages. The fresh wood ratio was increased up to 50% in Ishinomaki mill.
Nippon Paper Industries has been employing the enzymatic pitch control technology in paper making process for more than 3 years at unbleached lines. Recently lipase (Resinase A 2 X) is successfully applied to bleaching tower of bleached GP line at Ishinomaki mill. This technology has been successfully introduced to Daishowa Paper MFG. Co., Ltd. Fuji Mill and Hokuetsu Paper Mills., Ltd. Niigata Mill.
A paper mill can obtain following advantages by introducing lipase pitch control technology. a) The number of defects of paper and amount of pitch are decreased. The runnability of paper machine is increased. b) The frequency of cleaning machine is reduced. c) The dosage of chemicals, such as fine talc, cationic polymers, is dramatically reduced. d) Seasoning (storage in the woodyard) costs are saved (eg. wages, land rent, interest) e) The fresh wood ratio is increased. It results in higher brightness and reduces the cost of hydrogen peroxide for bleaching of GP. f) Increasing of dynamic friction coefficient (DFC) of paper saves expensive amorphous silica gel (white carbon).

Recently, the recovery boiler has a significant role in the steam generation field for pulp mills. It becomes important to generate high pressure and high temperature steam of more than 100 kg/cm2g × 500°C as well as to recover high quality chemical. KAWASAKI KJ type recovery boiler has the following principal design concepts;(1) Safety and High reliability (2) Long continuous operation (3) High quality chemical recovery and steam generation (4) Energy saving (5) Labour saving (6) Low emission.
This paper describes the newest technology based on the above concepts and introduces the operation records of recovery boilers, generating high pressure and high temperature steam.

Projected grating method is introduced to measure the three dimensional pulp slurry surface behavior for the estimation of the sheet formation on the fourdrinier. For this purpose, a simple experimental system was composed of the slide projector, video camera, A/D converter and micro computer. The grating image deformed by a flow of pulp slurry on the wire was analyzed and the three dimensional form of the surface of slurry was calculated. As the results, it became clear that the calculated three dimensional form of the surface is considereably influenced by the scattering in the plup slurry, therefore obtained form doesn't represent only the characteristics of pulp slurry surface. However, the method was significant to analyze the variations of pulp slurry behaviour and the effect of the cationic retention aids in the pulp slurry.

Supposed that shapes of U- and V-type semichemical (SCP) medium in the usual fiberboard actualize as semicircular and sinusoidal wave shape, an elastic stress analysis of SCP medium for corrugated fiberboard was performed under surface compression. Then stress and strength efficiency Ef (strength per mass of the corrugated sheet) were discussed and following results were obtained.
    (1) Lateral load Woc, of the semicircular SCP medium is as small as 0.8 times of Wos forsinusoidal one. Woc decreases with increase of thickness T of SCP medium and increases with increase of waveheight h for either SCP medium.
    (2) Maxium values of absolute bending stress (σcmax for the semicircular and σsmax for the sinusoidal SCP medium) are at the inner surface of the jointing positions SCP medium with kraft -liner. Ratio of σcmax/σsmax is about 1.7. Maxium values of the absolute stress for semicircular and sinusoidal SCP medium occur at 7 L/32 and L/6 (L: wavelength) from the jointing positions along machine direction, respectively.
    (3) Efs (Ef for sinusoidal SCP medium) increases initially, after arriving at a maxium point Ers decreases with the increase of T. Efs (Efs for the semicircular one) decreases monotonically with the increase of T. Efc and Efs decrease monotonically with the increase of L.
On the determination of shape for the semicircular SCP medium T should be taken as thick as possible and L as small as possible. On the determination of shape for the sinusoidal SCP mediu T should be taken as thick as the thickness giving the maxium of Ers, and L is as small as possible.
