With the progress of an “information-based” society, the popularity of various OA equipment has become wide-spread, and consequently, significant volumes of information forms and paper are used and wasted.
Efficient use of recycled paper for information forms and paper faced with a strng demand from the perspective of environmental preservation and garbage disposal problems.
There has been an advance in the technology to process waste paper for reuse, and organization of a recycling system is already under way.
Recently, apart from recycling of paper itself, many reports have been made which concern the use of reversible recording media.
This report introduces the general and technical trends for the use of reversible recording media as one possible replacement to information forms and paper, and briefly discusses future hopes in this aspect.

When competition is getting harder all the time, also the demand for quality gets higher. For that reason, paper machine suppliers are trying to find areas where you still can squeeze the last drop to get the best performance for your paper machine. Profiles are one area because conventionally systems which affect this parameter have been supplied by two or more independent suppliers: Paper Machine supplier supplies mechanical parts (headbox etc.) and automation supplier supplies actuator, CD control algorithms and gauging systems. This kind of deviation has involved that the control system lacks the paper machine supplier's point of view.
In the following presentation, I will introduce to you Valmet's opinion of critical CD control systems which should be supplied by paper machine supplier and where we really need those advanced profile control systems. Items are CD dry weight control system for headbox (Jetmatic MT and Optiprofile), which also includes a good tool for troubleshooting in dry weight profile and CD moisture control on press section with Valmet steambox and Sym-ZS-roll.

Pulp and paper industry of the Western countries have paid attention to the problem of dioxines and organic chlorine compounds since several years ago, and some countries have established severe regulation.
On the other hand, Japan Paper Association has decided the regulation of AOX 1.5kg/pt at the end of 1993.
Therefore, we are studying ECF bleaching methods of using H2O2.
It is important to prevent H2O2 decomposion by heavy metals to use H2O2 instead of the first chlorine stage. In the result of many trail concerning pre-treatment of pulp, acid pre-treatment (A) was most effective.
In the result of studying O-A-Eop-D-P sequence as ECF bleaching method, we have obtained the pulp with Brightness 86.5%, [η] 14.9 cP, AOX 0.21 kg/pt.
We believe that ECF bleaching methods of using H202 is very harmonious methods to the earth.

The 1993 Advanced Coating Fundamentals Symposium cosponsored by TAPPI and Japan TAPPI was held at the Marriott City Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on April 30-May 1.
This Symposium objective was to discuss deeply on fundamental aspects of paper coatings, especially, coating consolidation and structure. The program was divided into 3 sessions, and composed of 14 presentations including 4 presentations by Japanese and roundtable discussion at the end of every session.
144 researchers and engineers from numerous countries attended the Symposium and made lively discussions on the above issues.
In this paper, an outline of the Symposium are reported.

Paper is a texture of fibers. And fiber orientation strongly influences on the paper qualities, especially curl tendency.
This study shows the effects of distributors edge flow rate, side bleeds, recirculation flow rate on fiber orientation using headboxes in actual production line.
Regarding to the evaluation of the fiber orientation, a new method measuring the fiber orientation of a splitted sheet is applied and also separating test for determination of the fiber arrangement is developed.
Using these method, it is easy to check the relation of the fiber orientation and headbox flow conditions.
In case of some operating condition, having a cross direction vector in jet flow, main fiber orientation in the felt side and in the wire side was crossed and then the main fiber orientation angle in the whole sheet was small.

The effects of UV absorber and anti-oxidant additives on the light reversion of thermomechanical pulp (TMP) were tested. Among various additives tested, 2, 4, 6-triphenylphenol, benzylidine acetone, triallyl-s-triazine-2, 4, 6-(1 H, 3 H, 5 H)-trione, and uracil were more effective. When UV absorber and anti-oxidant were combined and applied to hand sheets, synergistic effects were observed and resulted in improvement of more than 70% RI Index in some cases.
