    The color mapping technique by using EPMA (Electron Probe Microanalyzer) was found very effective to measure the distribution of paper constituents such as pigments, SB-latex and silicone. In this paper, the principle and mechanism of EPMA were briefly described and several examples of color mapping applied to coated paper, cast coated paper and release liner etc. were demonstrated. The relationship of latex distribution to ink mottles on the coated paper surfaces was studied by means of the wide area state electron probe analyzer. It was recognized that the ink mottle was caused by ununiform distribution of latex on the coated paper surface.

    SEIKO EPSON Corporation has successfully developed the original ink jet printing technology MACH. MACH has overcome all defects of the conventional piezo ink jet technology and realized high printing quality and high printing speed. In this paper, history, principle, features of MACH and other effective means for high printing quality and high printing speed are described.

    In order to improve adhesion properties of polyethylene to paper sheets, UV radiation treatment and corona discharge treatment were examined as surface treatments methods for three types of paper boards.Acidic paper board, neutral paper board and coated paper board were used as sample sheets. The following results were obtained :
    (1) It was shown by the contact angle and the wetting index that the wettabilities of coated paper board, of acidic paper board and of neutral paper board were in the order of magnitude. Corona discharge treatment and UV radiation treatment were effective in the increase in their wettabilities for these sample sheets.
    (2) Corona discharge treatment for both the acid paper and the neutral one was effective on improvement in the adhesion properties. The coated paper showed a better adhesion property than other two kinds of paper boards even without a treatment. The adhesion properties with the coated paper were furthermore improved by the above treatment.
    (3) Chemical states of paper surface with and without the treatment were assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA). It was found by using ESCA that these treatments promoted the increase in oxygen amount upon the paper surface, and carbonyl and carboxyl groups increased especially with corona discharge treatment.

    TAPPIの年次大会 ('94年2月28日~3月2日) に出席する機会を得たので, その概要を紹介する。
    アトランタは歴史的に交通の要衝として発展してきた。南北戦争の際にも, 南軍の輸送の要であったため北軍の総攻撃を受け炎上した。その後も経済の交流の中心として発展を続けている。
    会場のGeorgia World Congress Centreはダウン・タウンから歩けるくらいの距離で, そこに巨大な会議・展示場をもっている。そこで大きな会議が年間をとおして絶え間なく行われておりアトランタの繁栄の基にもなっている。
    TAPPIの年次大会は2年毎に開催される。以前は技術的な発表も行われたが, それらが別の技術会議 (Pulping Conference, Papermakers Conference, Coating Conference等) に引き継がれたので, 年次大会は経営的・経済的な問題を中心に講演が行われるとともに, 経営者・管理職の交流をはかるのが目的になっている。併せてサプライヤーの大展示会が開かれ, 製品・技術の紹介が行われる。このため, 大勢の入々が集まり2年に1度のお祭となっている。今回の展示の大きさは, 晴海の展示場2つを併せたくらいの規模で, 各サプライヤーが大きなブースを構え熱心に説明を行っていた。
    今回の講演の主要テーマの1つが “Gaining the Competitive Edge in a Global Marketplace” で, 国際競争力が大きな関心となっている。北欧と日本がその対象との認識で, 今後の対日圧力が予想される。State of the Industry (Part 1) で新王子製紙 (株) の河毛会長がアジアの現状を紹介され聴衆の関心を集められた。
    もう1つのテーマが環境問題で, 漂白技術及び低排水工場 (The Low Effluent Mill) であった。
    アメリカ製紙産業の目下の最大の関心がこの2つのテーマと言ってよい。
    TAPPIの年次大会には主要各国の技術協会からも参加があり, 国際交流の成果をあげている。今回もカナダ, スウェーデン, フインランド, ドイツ, イギリス, メキシコ及び日本から集まり交流を深めた。
    以下, 講演の要旨を紹介するが, 国際問題及び政府の政策に関する部分を第1部に, 環境に関する部分を第2部にまとめる。

    In the past ten years, type of former has been changed from Fourdrinier to Hybrid one because of the industry's requirement of high speed and quality and true Twin-Wire Former would be an industry's standard in near future.
    Paper machine operators can see various forming phenomena such as drainage amount distribution and stock activity on the Fourdrinier table and pre-forming zone of the Hybrid former. Therefore they could make up their product quality by combining their visual inspection with their past experience. In the Twin Wire forming process, however, we can not see any forming actions because most of drainage is occured during the stock being between two wires.
    This program has been set to make clear sheet forming mechanism in the Twin-Wire Former. In this section, drainage pressure between two wires was measured and factors were surveyed.

    In the previous papers [Mokuzai Gakkaishi, 28, 355 (1982), 29, 164 (1983)] piperidine, diethylamine and triethylamin were observed to accelerate delignification at a charge of 1% on wood. Furthermore, the behavior of lignin model compound with soda-piperidine treatment have been studied to clarify the acceleration mechanism of delignification with piperidine. Based on these results, the effect of amine on delignification during soda cooking has been summarized as shown in Fig. 1 of this paper. This shows that various nucleophilic amines react with the electrophilic reactive site of lignin, and therewith accelerates delignification by preventing the condensation reactions of lignin molecules.
    In this paper, thirteen kinds of amines were selected, and their delignifications with anthraquinone additive (AQ) were compared by the use of red pine and birch wood meals. Furthermore, mixed chips (spruce and abies) and red alder chips were cooked with sodamethylamine and -dimethylamin, and the pulp properties were compared with those of kraft cooked pulp. The results are summarized as follows :
    (1) Red pine and birch wood meals were cooked with thirteen kinds of amines. Delignification of birch is accelerated with amine, but that of red pine is not enough within the cooking conditions used here. Nucleophilicity of amino group affected by alkyl group is not so strong, and the steric structure and solubility of amine in cooking liquor will also affect the delignification.
    (2) The delignification by soda-amine cooking is accelerated with AQ additive. Amine alone, however, may not be enough as cooking additive, contrary to our expectation.
    (3) Sheet strength of cooked pulp with amine and AQ additives is stronger than that with amine alone. Soda cooked pulp with dimethylamine and AQ additives (0.2% amine and 0.05% AQ on chips) shows the similar sheet strength to kraft pulp, especially in the case of red alder.
