    Former sheet cutters had to rest while piled sheets of paper is transfered. To perform continuous non-stop running there were two choices, installing a reject gate or a dual layboy system.
    However they had still some problems as follows :
    (1) Poor running efficiency.
    (2) Poor work efficiency due to happening inaccurate cut-length at sheet cutter start/stop.
    (3) Mean production yield rate.
    (4) Many complex works to force operators.
    (5) Big amount of initial cost.
    To solve the problems mentioned above Minami-Senju developed the first Continuous Pile Change System in 1981. In 1986, further advanced improvement on the system featuring what there were nothing of rejected sheets during pile change was made under a cooperation work together with Mitsubishi Paper Mills, Ltd., Hachinohe Mill.

    ICHIKAWA CO., LTD. was founded in 1949, and is specialized in the press felt industry. The announcement of the extended-nip press concept by Beloit, back in early '70es, motivated us to develop the new technology in both press felt and “belt” products. Initiated the market evaluation of our products from 1982, followed by the sales expansion in 1988, it passed over decade.
    On this occasion, we report our development strategy and market experience.

    This report describes operating experience of PM 9, which was started in May 1997 for producing A 3 grade. PM 9 is designed to attain the greatest productivity possible and to bear the strongest competition.
    We were the first in the world to install on-machine double-coater and on-line hot soft nip calender in order that three separate process (paper making, coating and calendering) can be accomplished by this machine.
    This report describes mainly our operating experience of headbox, ceramic center roll, shoe press (3 P), air-jet type threading, high temperature soft nip calender and Opti reel.
    Our primary objective of having less sheet break in the machine part has been achieved and we are doing pretty good productionwise.
    Our products have good runnability of printing press, ink set, dot sharpness and print gloss, which have enabled us to win a high reputation.
    Under the motto “Easy Papermaking” we are endeavoring to have an efficient production system that enable cost reductions and higher product quality.

    In our Kushiro Mill, we started up the L-1 M/C in October 1974, which at that time was the largest daily production machine in Japan. Originally the machine had two inlets and had a wire width of 7, 100 mm. It had the capacity of producing 700 T/D of linerboard. Since then, the L-1 M/C was rebuilt for the purpose of improving product quality and increasing machine speed.
    Presently, we produce an average of 1, 370 T/D of kraft pulp liner, with a maximum operation speed of 900 m/min. In July 1997 we remodeled the No.1 inlet to improve product quality. Modulejet, the name of the inlet, also carries consistency profiling equipment.
    The following report describes the operational experience of the Modulejet inlet from the initial start-up to the present time.

    The No 4 paper machine in Iwanuma mill started up in 1991 and since then it has played an important role as one of the most productive and quality superior paper machines. The customers of No 4 paper machine are extremely quality oriented newsprint companies and to meet their quality standards, No 4 has paid special attention for their products.
    The No 4 installed the Optireel to eliminate the possible wrinkles which occurred at the bottom of the reel last May. As a result, the wrinkles have been completely eliminated and the quality assurance to the customers has improved.

    Hokuetsu Niigata Mill started up recently its third coated paper machine (PM 8) with a capacity of 240, 000 tpy. For the purpose of not having to purchase as much market hardwood pulp for this machine and other upgraded machines, the increase of pulp production capacity and the modernization of the pulp plant were planned and carried out before the machine's start up.
    Many facilities such as a recovery boiler, a recausticizing plant including lime kiln, a bleach chemical preparation plant, a steam turbine and power generator, an evaporation plant, a wastewater treatment facility, a chip handling system and a fiber line have been installed one after another according to the three-year program which was completed by March 1998.
    This fiber line with 1, 200 tpd of hardwood bleached pulp is now running satisfactorily and achieved the expected results, meeting demands of quality and quantity for the paper machines of our four mills.
    This article describers operation experience of the ITC (Isothermal Continuous Cooking) digester system which has the state-of-the-art technology of extended delignification in the new fiber line.

    The first Drum Dispracer Washer “DDW” was started up in Japan at Nomachi Mill, Chuetu Pulp and Paper CO., Ltd in this January.
    This washer has individual structure as a drum type washer, and it has many useful characteristics. It is operating smoothly at present though there was a small trouble.
    This report describes the operating experience of the Drum Displacer Washer.

    Power transmission consignment using utility grid is sanctioned and available since April 1997. This article introduces outline and characteristics of this consignment system as well as our experiences of three applications including the purpose, plan and effects.
    In particular, the power transmission consignment to our Yonago Mill from our Kure Mill attracted the nationwide attention because of the first practice in Japan and full-scale application throughout the year. Then, this application is presented as well.
    Furthermore, this article also discusses the problematic point as this consignment system has just begin and still have various problems.

    The principle regarding waste paper in the pulp and paper industry is to promote fibrous recycle for raw materials of paper and paperboard as much as possible.
    Unfortunately, under the present circumstance, some waste paper is left over because of the un-recyclable or surplus due to the imbalance of waste paper supply and demand, which can not be utilized but are incinerated or dumped as rubbish.
    However, un-recyclable or surplus waste paper can be used as fuel for high efficiency power plant in pulp and paper industry in order to manufacture pulp. This thermal recycle is as significant as fibrous recycle in term of accomplishment of complete recycle from raw materials through energy as final usage of waste paper. In addition, the thermal recycle is also important to the environmental issues, such as reducing waste, preventing global warming and cutting fossil fuels down.

    Recently, we have constructed a new heavy oil boiler (N 1 boiler) and steam turbine (N 1 turbine) to reduce energy cost in our Kishu Mill.
    This new system replaced the less efficient old boiler and turbine. This N 1 boiler is equipped with a newly developed unique low-NOx combustion system. This paper introduces the data of the NOx emission obtained during the short period from the trial to the normal operation.

    Hachinohe Mill has been operated to optimized the productivity of the coaters, and as the result, productivity of the supercalender has been a bottle-neck of the mill productivity. To clear this bottle-neck, resin roll was introduced to the supercalender as a measure to improve the productivity of the supercalender.
    Through the discussions with resin roll producers, roll matches to 1, 000 m/minute maximum operation speed, 350 kg/cm maximum linear pressure, 90°C steel roll temperature was prepared and subjected to the trial. Trail showed the improvement of the productivity without any scratch to the roll, but showed some reduction of product qualities such as 3 to 5% loss of gloss. Reconsideration of the resin material and the increase of linear pressure resulted the quality equivalent to our conventional products but the long run trial showed the occasional peel off of the roll surface, surface crack and other operation troubles, and thus roll material is further changed to the material having high heat resistance and high load resistance. Furthermore, regularly scheduled roll cleaning and roll grinding, and temperature control was introduced. All those measures allow the improved productivity of the supercalender without any sacrifice to the product quality.
    Price for the new resin roll is much expensive that of the conventional roll but can be paid off by the extension of the grinding period and also the life of the roll. As the result, 10% increase of the supercalender productivity was acheved.

    It is inevitable that wastes generate from papermaking processes, nevertheless, it is possible to reduce significantly the amount of landfill disposal by minimizing waste generation and promoting waste utilization.
    We are promoting the activity, called “Zero Discharge Campaign”, for eliminating the wastes carried into the final disposal site by the above mentioned ways. The amount of wastes finally disposed (i.e., the amount of landfill disposal) in our company was about 150, 000t in 1995, then we are addressing the plan to reduce it to nearly 4, 200 t during 1997 and 1998, which corresponds to 0.12% of our product weight.
    As for the fields of utilization, coal ash and effluent sludge burned ash are often processed on commission as the raw material for cement, meanwhile, we are going on the works on selling the granular carbonized product from effluent sludge and finding new uses for coal ash.
    So as to promote our campaign, the consciousness reformation of all personnel and the mighty leadership of our top management as well as the eagerness of the interested persons in each mill are indispensable.
