Personal comments were described about the pilot study of human tonsil bank in National Children's Hospital. Main feature of the present study was that donors were infants and children. Much more discussion will be needed for the tissue donation from minors. Basically, donors should be persons who can comprehend the explanation by adults, i. e., school children or greater. Although inclusive explanation is impracticable at the time of informed consent, more concrete presentation of expected use of tissues, such as outline of previous research is desirable. Although Japanese government announced several guidelines concerning life science research, including research on human embryonic stem cells, the discussions during the development of guidelines were not really sufficient. Since various kinds of human tissues will be handled by human tissue bank, nationwide mutual discussion must be necessary.
