Effect of pile length on the comfortable usage for the powder puff was investigated by both subjective and objective evaluations. Two series of samples varying the pile length from 4 mm to 16 mm were made from the same fiber type and fabric structure for this purpose. Subjects evaluated the degree of “springy”,“soft” and “smooth” sensation of a puff against the skin without using the cosmetic powder. The longer the pile length generated stronger springy feeling. This springy feeling was closely related to the compression energy (WC) obtained by KES-handy compression tester. The preferred pile length was 11 mm and 13 mm when subjects evaluated the overall sensation by the puff without using cosmetic powder. When subjects used these samples with cosmetic powder for their make-up, puff with pile length of 7 mm was most preferred. Long pile length such as 16 mm disturbed for the subject to put powders into their various curved area of face.

On the basis of a color of clothes, we analyzed a psychological/a sensibility factor of a person, and studied the relationship between consciousness of wearer and phenomenon of wearing clothes both in Japan and Korea. The Koreans tended to wear clothes in high chroma, whereas the Japanese those in low chroma. They made a great difference in consciousness related to self-revelation, expectation for approval by others, and self-expression with clothes. The color of their wearing clothes in high chroma in Korea seems to be related to strong exhibitionism expressing their personality. On the other hand, the Japanese tend to wear subdued clothes in the low value and chroma, so that they might not stand out or give impact on others, because they have the strong senses of willingness to be accepted by the society, society model characteristics to mind how another person looks, and group model characteristics to want to be the same as others. Through this research, we were able to connect a color of clothes with fashion awareness.

In order to reduce the irregularities of sliver made from fine denier fibers, a method of pin-drafting utilizing a moving gill-faller bar was investigated. In the pin-drafting system, both the pin count and the pitch of the gill-faller bar are crucial in the control of staple fibers: the faller bar pitch affects the longitudinal direction of the sliver and the pin count affects it in terms of the width and thickness of the sliver. The effect of fiber control can be estimated by considering the number of fibers in/out of contact with the pins of gill-faller and the size of the group of moving fibers.
The experimental result for fine denier fibers showed that it is necessary to decrease the number of fibers out of contact with the pins of gill-faller and/or the size of the group of moving fibers by controlling the fiber density of the sliver.

This study aims to obtain fundamental information for designing komochi-suji plaid patterns and for applying them to skirts. The effect of pattern elements on the visual impression of the komochi-suji plaid patterns with white and black colors was studied using the semantic differential method from the perspective of Kansei engineering. The pattern images printed on A4 white paper were used as samples to obtain the pattern information, and female university students evaluated them. The images used were vertical unit suji stripe, vertical unit komochi-suji stripe, vertical komochi-suji stripes pattern and komochi-suji plaid pattern. These patterns were developed from a basic structure to a complicated structure. The number of lines, line widths, line intervals and stripe intervals that gave evaluators a good impression were clarified numerically. The komochi-suji plaid patterns that gave the best impressions were selected. The paper and cloth skirts with different sizes of the selected pattern were evaluated and the best pattern dimension of the komochi-suji plaid pattern for skirts was recommended.
