The usefulness of continuous intravenous infusion of a combination mixture with 500 ml 10% guaifenesin solution, 2g ketamine and 500mg xylazine was studied in 9 thoroughbred racing horses in comparison with isoflurane anesthesia. The types of surgery performed in this study were bone fragment removal (n=3), hematoma removal (n=3) and castration (n=3) . The horses were premedicated with atropine and xylazine. Anesthesia was induced with ketamine. The median duration of infusion was 58.3 min and the median infusion rate was 1.23 ml/kg/hr. Depth of anesthesia was monitored by palpebral reflexes, nystagmus and swallowing retlex. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were significantly higher, while PaO
2 was significantly lower in the infusion group than in the isoflurane-anesthetized group. All horses recovered uneventfully without any postsurgical lameness. In conclusion, infusion of this combination is a useful anesthetic technique even for thoroughbred racing horses, provided that plenty of oxygen is given.
