The prophylactic and therapeutic effects of flunixin meglumine on hemodynamics in 20 adult mongrel dogs with endotoxin-induced shock were investigated. The dogs were divided into four groups depending on the drugs used and the time of drug administration. They were induced general anesthesia and hemodynamic parameters were measured until 180 minutes after administration of endotoxin (3 mg/kg, iv) . Pretreatment with flunixin meglumine (1 mg/kg, iv) significantly prevented endotoxin-induced decreases in mean aortic pressure and cardiac output. Treatment with flunixin meglumine (1 mg/kg, iv) after administrotion of endotoxin significantly improved the endotoxin-induced decreases in mean aortic pressure and cardiac output, as that with dexamethasone (3 mg/kg, iv) . These findings suggested the usefulness of flunixin meglumine for the prevention and treatment of endotoxin-induced shock.

The usefulness of continuous intravenous infusion of a combination mixture with 500 ml 10% guaifenesin solution, 2g ketamine and 500mg xylazine was studied in 9 thoroughbred racing horses in comparison with isoflurane anesthesia. The types of surgery performed in this study were bone fragment removal (n=3), hematoma removal (n=3) and castration (n=3) . The horses were premedicated with atropine and xylazine. Anesthesia was induced with ketamine. The median duration of infusion was 58.3 min and the median infusion rate was 1.23 ml/kg/hr. Depth of anesthesia was monitored by palpebral reflexes, nystagmus and swallowing retlex. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were significantly higher, while PaO2 was significantly lower in the infusion group than in the isoflurane-anesthetized group. All horses recovered uneventfully without any postsurgical lameness. In conclusion, infusion of this combination is a useful anesthetic technique even for thoroughbred racing horses, provided that plenty of oxygen is given.

A Cocker Spaniel showing mild depression, abdominal distention and dyschesia underwent computed tomography (CT), and primary pancreatic tumor was suspected. The tumor was located at the tip of the left lobe, which was surgically removed. Pathological examination of the mass revealed well-differenciated adenocarcinoma derived from exocrine pancreas. The patient was in good health after surgery but suddenly died on the 106th day from unknown cause. Pancreatic tumor originated from the exocrine gland has no specific clinical signs and reliable parameters in blood chemistry. CT was quite useful as an imaging modality for the diagnosis and prognosis of this disease.

Two types of surgical instruments (testis-fixation apparatus) to help a single surgeon for feline castration were devised and applied to 450 cats. These instruments composed of transparent acryl plates and a stainless steel extension panel to fix and tract the testicle. These instruments enabled the single surgeon to identify the cord structure clearly, ligate the correct position and prevent unexpected bleeding, thus to shorten the procedures.
